I think you're spot on. I played through it and really enjoyed it, but I went into it as a mobile game only, I picked it up on iOS. If I look at it from that perspective, I think it succeeds. It's simple, clever, doesn't hit you over the head with too much and as you said, can be enjoyed in short spurts. However, I don't think they should've released on PC or PS4 because it gives off the impression it's a bigger, larger game than it is. On the flip side, the reason I chose Florence as my mobile game of the year is because it knew what it was. A mobile game. It was a 45 min experience, utilized touch controls super well and didn't overstay it's welcome. I felt that Donut County did a bit too much or as you say, could've introduced more mechanics.

Totally acceptable to be hard on a game if there are flaws, overall I think it's good criticism. We need voices like this in the community to help game developers learn and see what their fans want and how to make games better. I like the core idea of this game, it looks fun but more like.. something I'd find on a game site back in high school, maybe not something I'd want to pay money for given how short and lackluster you made it seem.

I got really excited about this when I saw it, thinking it would be a more developed version of Hole.io, a mobile game I really like. But if anything it feels less developed. There's a bit towards the end where it scanned across a city and a was like "yay, I'm going to get to swallow up all that!", but no, they had me stuck inside some lab instead. And I found all the cut scenes extremely dull and just wanted to skip them all. I really feel like it was a waste of money.

I enjoyed it, but it needed a grander finale than what it had. Katamari ended with you finally getting that huge payoff moment of rolling up the entire world - i would have liked to see something similar in Donut County. If the last level was you moving the hole around and swallowing up an entire city building by building, i think it would have met my expectation. Instead the biggest thing that you absorb is a small building on it's own, and that's the level finished. I guess the developer (a single guy) might have hit some roadblocks and been unable to implement something so large. Definitely scope for a sequel/expansion though.

Yup! Have you heard anything about a sequel?

@@peppage No, but it would be good to see one

I had slightly different reasons, but I ran into more or less the same thing when I went through my own run. I found that it was short enough that getting to the ending was worth it.

I grabbed it on the switch and it was fun while it lasted but very short. The game over seen was pretty funny though.

Was the last stage ramp-up something that might be explored further in DLC or something?
