True story from an Aussie ex cop. I was working in a plainclothes anti drug/anti theft unit and we took a probationer (rookie) out for a ride along when we were doing a surveillance job. I was driving, he was supposed to be giving me directions (back when we only had paper street directories, no google maps back then) to catch back up to the surveillance team after we had to peel off after being on eyeball. So of course I’m driving like a maniac and trying to also read the directory cause he was crapping himself. Was probably a 3 or 4 hour job. Dropped him off back at his station (we worked out of covert premises) at the end of the day. Came back to get him the following day and the Patrol Commander asked what I did to the new guy and pointed at a box in the police station. It was the probationers gear. He got back the day before, boxed up all his uniform etc and quit on the spot. Lol.

After we had the guy in the car my FTO told me everybody was expecting me to cuff the guy and I was like “ah shit my bad, I didn’t realize that was my job” and then for the rest of the night I had each person on shift tell me on separate occasions that next time something like that happened, it was my job to find a job unless told otherwise. Human being absolutely generally suck under high stress situations. It becomes harder to think and your body undergoes physical reactions that are hard to fight through. It takes a lot of training to make skills reflective and to fight through your body’s natural reactions, even then some people can’t overcome their own body. A lot of police departments don’t have the money to train for high stress situations and this is exasperated by a general cultural refusal to consider the effects of physiology on high stress situations.

I'm still firmly of the opinion that Defund was never about doing away with the police. It was about control. Control of who gets to be police, and control of who gets to choose who gets to be police. The point was put the people who they want in charge, and having the people in charge hire the people they want to be police.
@JohnSmith091239 ай бұрын
No I think it was because law enforcement is too overbloated as a whole. Especially given the fact that cops are more likely to escalate something rather than de escalate something. Then when something real happens those same cops do nothing at all i.e Uvalde, Broward County Sheriffs Office just to name a couple of agencies. Then when a cop is in the wrong, very rarely does another officer step in and actually intervene and when the good cop does intervene they generally do step in, they are shunned by the agency. Then there is the fact that these agencies cut corners when it comes to training, and hiring requirements. So you have power hungry, egotistical, borderline corrupt agencies + agencies that cut corners when it comes to hiring and training, and people have had enough and say, if they are not going to use the funds properly, then they shoul be defunded.
@tarn11359 ай бұрын

Acorn cop had years of specops training. Lack of training isn't the issue, its recieving bad, unconstitutional training.

On one hand I see over and over why we cannot lower our standards to include everyone in all jobs, but on the other I also see why we can't outright bar people based on generalities. I'd prefer if hazing to the point of someone quiting didn't happen; I'm much more a proponant of very light humor mixed with teaching or even retraining where necessary. Unfortunately, you just can't have certain kinds of people as police officers; if they're likely to thrown down with someone just because they get called ugly, they probably shouldn't be a cop. It's not just training that needs funding either, it's the people who train the trainees as well. Bad teachers lead to bad students, so they need to be paid reasonably well alongside extensive vetting and maybe even training procedures of their own like what officers in the military get. But we all know how many departments either can't have their own training programs for logistical reasons other than money, never mind the sheer amount of them that force their officers to pay for their equipment out of pocket. The reason we get bad policing is exactly what Donut always says; bad training. Even the police countrywide are more than willing to look into and remedy issues of racially-motivated uses of force when you present them with honest data...so give them *more* money, not *less*
