If you’ve been paying attention you’ve probably noticed that the wheels on the S14 look a bit like garbage! And let’s be honest who doesn’t like a brand new set of wheels. However, I actually like the wheels on the S14 and would like to use them for a bit longer while I save for something new in the future. That said, today we are fixing those scuffed wheels and hopefully I don’t potato them in the process.
Money Pit is where you get to learn about cars as we work on them. Each ep we’ll breakdown how each component works and then we’ll upgrade it. Join us in our journey to build cool cars, learn about them, and drive the crap out of them!

Hey guys, it's Zach - I want to point out that I DEFINITELY should have been wearing a proper respirator while painting. ESPECIALLY because I was using activated paint, which makes it much worse for you. I wasn't thinking, and should have been. I'm setting an example for a lot of you guys and I promise to do better on the personal protective equipment. Love you all!!

Very good and detailed video. To anyone reading the comments, I would recommend repairing the rash yourself, but then just drop it off at a powder coater. It typically costs $75 per wheel to have it sandblasted and powder coated which is only $10 more than he paid to paint it himself. You won't need to spend 8 hours of your time and you'll get a stronger finish in the end.
@mindaugas1906

65 dollars a wheel was overstatement. Because with one can of clear/paint he could have finished 3 or even 4 wheels. Better prepare all of them at once. But your advice is better. And your body will thank you as 2k clear and painting in general is very bad for your lungs.

2 Things Zach, I would say always sand down the primer, regardless of how flat it lays down, you need those fine scratches of the 400-600 grit for the paint to adhere to the primer. As for the tack cloths, its always better to completely open it and let it air out for at least 5 minutes. that cloth has this residue that if used too rough on your panel, itll leave that residue and give you fisheyes on your paint and itll reflect on your clear. Other than that, im super impressed with how much you know man. Amazing job (just a tip from a body tech/painter)

When I was working on the airframes with a retired Navy sheet metal guy he explained to me you should only work he file on a surface in one direction; away from you. Not in a back and forth motion. The back and forth dulls the filing edge. He started of using the aforementioned technique with the coarse side of the file; but went back and forth instead of away from his body with the fine side. The wheel came out great IMO. I’m actually thinking of going this route instead of shelling out $1000 on a set of new wheels!!! Thanks for the great “How-To” video.

Nice to see him honest about the time required. I see so many people do DIY videos and say “for $50 and just a hour of your time...” when they already have hundreds of $ in tools needed (removing tires for instance) and it would take a normal person 3-4x as long since it’s their first time doing it, AND the results won’t come out quite as advertised since a lot of it takes practice to get just right.

Curb repair per wheel and color match at our best local place is about 100 to 150 per wheel depending on the size - and that is with bents getting fixed included... One important thing left out is that not all spray can paint is compatible with one another - always make sure you dont mix enamel with urethane or lacquer - it will wrinkle the paint/primer and/or clear the moment you spray it. I live on Long Island. I did my truck rims early spring last year, came out minty and it was awesome. They looked new and it held up great. Until it snowed. The snow melt on the roads DESTROYED the clear coat (it was specifically made for rims like the stuff you have). It looked so bad I had to removed the clear coat and ultimately the rims are trashed (I had sanded them prior to starting the job to clean them up). My advice? If you live in perpetual 70 degrees, go for it - mine held up all year till the next January. If you live in NY or anywhere they chemically treat the roads for snow and ice - don't.

8+ years professional wheel repair guy here. Can confirm this is about the best way to DIY your own wheels with basic tools. Only things I'd add are don't be too heavy handed with the acetone (especially around your blend areas), it's always a better idea to scuff your primer even if it laid down perfect (just removes one potential point for flaking to begin in the future), and don't forget to factor in cost of getting your tires mounted and dismounted and balanced if you don't have easy access to the equipment to do so yourself. Might push total cost pretty close to the range of having a pro do it if cost alone is your main concern. That said, the satisfaction of looking at them every day and knowing you did that with your own hands is priceless 👍

I've fixed curb rash and refinished those exact wheels using a near identical process for a foxbody running in the NASA Camaro-Mustang Challenge series. We stuck with Duplicolor products and no clear coat for a much cheaper result. We were only going for "race car quality" and not a show quality finish, but they still turned out about 90% of a show finish for less work and expense. I've also used citrus based strippers to completely remove the finish from wheels that had a number of previous low quality finishes applied to them. That is a much more labor intensive process as you have to go over it a couple times with the stripper followed by a mineral spirits wipe down before you go to the sand paper. I found a combination of metal and plastic putty knives, copper pot scrubbers, metal welding brushes, and steel wool work well when removing the normally very thick factory wheel finish when using the strippers. Having completely bare metal was a good way to fully inspect the wheels for cracks. When some of the wheels were stripped, it uncovered a raw as-cast aluminum finish that had a much more course texture than some of the other wheels. It was a cool texture, but it didn't quite match the other wheels we had. So if you stip the wheels, be prepared for what you might uncover, especially if they have been produced by different manufacturers, or at different times by the same manufacturer. Too bad you didn't do it in the video, but did recognize the fact that you needed to up your PPE game, especially when using any type of catylized paint.

Let's be real, it's gonna be about $100 per wheel to do this yourself if you start from zero tools. Plus, as a total beginner? You prep all four wheels for prep on one day off (assuming you have a second set obviously) second day off you address blemishes, maybe prep for paint if you're lucky. If you work fast by day 3 you're laying down paint and over a weekend finishing them all up. Plus! Paying a tire shop to take off, then put back on the tires. At the end of the day, same cost give or take $20 a wheel as having a professional repair them (if you live somewhere that only costs $140 or so a wheel) but a solid 50+ hour work week of finger tip grinding, back breaking sweaty labor. I'll save my pennies and go to the pros. Big props to you for doing this cause I don't have the fortitude after doing one too many in my younger days lol.
