Haha totally agree. If they had filmed this more recently, they could have taken the advice of subscribers on like the first few episodes to get a better oil pan. Lots of people were commenting that the stock WRX oil pan allows oil to stray from the pickup tube under hard cornering like track days, which can be solved with better baffling and more capacity like the Killer B pan. Probably would have saved them a few engines by preventing oil starvation that results in worn/spun bearings.

I half rolled my 06 wrx in poor conditions last year on November 11th 2021 at 257k miles. I didn't have the funds to repair the roof and A-pillar but I had my spare 04 2.5rs shell that was WRX swapped by the previous owner. Sometime in October a couple months back I finally got the motivation to see if the engine was still saveable, did an oil change, primed the oil system and after plugging the fuel relay back in she fired right over. Ran her through a few heatcycles to rule out any possible gremlins and she checked out. Still felt excruciatingly hopeless considering it was the factory longblock that I refreshed the heads on at 239k and added some reliability focused upgrades/mods. When I drained the oil I was pleasantly surprised to find no shavings or excessive metal indicating any failure. Coolant was old but clean of any foreign contaminants So ive been in the process of swapping my 06's engine, drivetrain, subframe's, engine/chassis harness and full interior (dash and all) into the 04 shell after doing a full teardown on that one too. I've owned my 06 since 2015, she's my heart and soul and ever since i wrecked her ive been lost. So I revived her into a new body so she can live on and be alive once more. I'm so close to finishing the swap, at the end of today she will breathe life once again after the seats are installed, rear subframe, drivetrain, engine, and new whiteline suspension components. Yeah Subarus get a bad rep, but they tend to find THEIR owners. Ones who will love them unconditionally and take care of them. You can still have so much fun and get so much enjoyment out of these cars but the important points to achieve that are PRIORITIZE PREVENATIVE MAINTENANCE AND RELIABILITY FOCUSED SUPPORTING MODS. You have to start with a solid foundation before you can build on it.

It's been one of my issues with the whole high low cars set up. They do almost no research into anything they buy. Almost as if they just do shopping on reddit. More expensive more better. It's gonna get to the point to where they buy 2 super cars one with an engine and one with out and race them to see which ones faster. I had to tap out of this episode It's not for me.

12:20 As a Subaru owner, I sincerely hope Low Car's center differential is still good after towing like that. The owner's manual recommends flatbed towing, but allows for manual transmission models to be towed with all four wheels still on the ground with the transmission in neutral. If you tow it like you did with the front wheels in the air you will cause the viscous center differential to spin and heat up. Good luck with the rest of this series. Hopefully nothing else goes wrong.

Great series! I owned a Hawkeye WRX. Loved it. Was really reliable and modded well over the years. I progressed slower obviously but ended up with a very fast little car. Beat many STI’s, I think because my 5sp was way lighter and had longer gears. Had to be careful launching. 5sp was fragile. I did pretty much everything Donut did. Mine was more like “mid car”. I also swapped s***** steering rack with quicker ratio unit. I also avoided oil starvation with better pan, baffles and uptake. Money well spent, never spun a bearing after 300,000 kms. Well done team. Since WRX I’ve progressed through an E46 M3, Golf R and finally my dream car 911. 997.2 manual 6sp. All have been fun but the Subie was the most fun. Track days in summer and back road winter driving made the car my favourite. Cost of ownership eventually catches up. Bang for buck you just can’t beat a WRX. The f****** fuel pump on 911 cost more than my whole stage 1 on the Subie. That was just the start. So much cabbage spent on 911 eventually made me hate it and sell it. I’m rocking a 1968 Mercedes 220 now. Slow but so cool.

I’m not sure who is rebuilding the motors and how knowledgeable they are.

@@BigSmoke-lf9jk Eh, like anything, you have to be smart about what you are upgrading. You can't just slap a bunch of shit on and expect everything to be okay. Speaking for the STIs, they are perfectly happy with mild-ish bolt-ons, anything up to where the stock injectors max out, about ~300whp. The car will be perfectly fine and reliable assuming you have a quality tune (Pro tune, not OTS), and change your oil at intervals in line with how you drive it. And this aligns with plenty of other brands. Once you try to crank the power past that, you are well beyond stock power levels, and at this point you'd better be investing in better internals/parts to compensate for the additional power. Which also aligns with plenty of other brands. The issue that Subaru has is that everyone under the sun wants to mod it, many do it just plain wrong, the car blows up, people are like "Subaru sucks," they meme the shit out of it, and then the internet jumps on the bandwagon. I promise you, you take care of your Subaru, treat it right, don't be stupid, and chances are extremely high that it will be dead reliable for you.
