Thank you for making this video, it took me straight back to my late teens/early 20's and the love I had for rallying. My first car was a mk2 Escort, those drivers and especially McRae were the reason why I used to thrash it down the country lanes hanging it's arse out on the turns and eventually wrecked it, crashing it on a hump-back bridge though in McRae style I still drove it home. I went to many of those special stages over the years and I was there for those victory donuts in 1995. They were special times, though I quit going after 1997 when they moved it all to Wales, it was too much of a pain in the arse to drive all the way there, stand around in the cold and wet at the side of the stage and then drive home (I switched to touring cars so I ended up driving to those and standing at the side of an often cold, windy ex-airfield circuit instead...). Rallying was something else back then though with stage-side makeshift fixes after crashes and mechanical trouble, I remember teams sometimes borrowing parts from spectator's cars to get them to the service point, I hope those guys got properly compensated lol. Rallying these days is fast but it just seems so tame now.

At the end of the video I was really sad about this incredibly "talented" guy. But after reading about the accident, I realized he was just a lucky "reckless" guy . Sheriff Nikola Stewart, who heard the inquiry over 16 days at Lanark Sheriff Court, concluded that the deaths could have been avoided if Mr McRae had not engaged in low-level flying "when it was unnecessary and unsafe to do so". "Mr McRae chose to fly the helicopter into the valley. For a private pilot such as Mr McRae, lacking the necessary training, experience or requirement to do so, embarking upon such demanding, low-level flying in such difficult terrain, was imprudent, unreasonable and contrary to the principles of good airmanship."

When I learned about that, it struck me as if he developed addiction to action and adrenaline, and while he was able to compete to satisfy that, it grew to the point where it began to consume parts outside of his rally life, culminating in this crash. In a way it reminds me of Dave Mirra, how he did BMX until he couldn't, took up Rally until he couldn't, starting to do Iron Man runs, but then that had to stop and eventually led to his suicide. I guess just be sure to look out for your friends, especially if they react poorly if they have to take a break from something they like, since addiction can mask itself in different ways...

Because if those cars can survive what he did, they can survive what you will do This comment has been written by a guy who has been driving his 2011 Subaru outback for the entire time and is currently nearing the 200,000 mile point on the original motor and the original transmission and the original differentials. The only problem I've had was a transmission valve failure about 150,000 that I caught before it destroyed the transmission. I know some people have had their Outbacks throw rods at 90,000 but my family is owned Subarus about as far as I can remember and none of them have died on us.
