There was a deputy in my county who was demonstrating this "out of battery" situation in the squad room one night, pressing the gun into the palm of his hand and pulling the trigger. Problem being, the gun was loaded and he shot himself through the palm of his hand. Years later, he likes to joke he was shot on-duty and he also shot the guy who shot him.

Yeah, the instructor in my ex's academy was talking about some of the DDs he rolled on. Those are scary. He also set up an "activity" day. He had a bunch of off duty officers playing the bad guys and all the trainees had to use squirt guns (there was a couple of guys in that class that shouldn't ever be given a gun...) The class had traffic stops where the officer perp was screwing with the cop (put your arm out--so he put it out and in, does push ups on the ground...). The DD episode was scary. They had a vacant house at the old base they used for this whole thing and they had a male and female cop doing the yelling. One of the trainees got clocked in the face with a chair because they took their eyes off the female while trying to deal with the male who ducked as the girl swung it. Another guy got hosed with a gun from the male because he was turned arguing with the female. It was a hard thing, they were playing it like they happen. A few got him down, one took the female in. The pat downs got criticized, two of the guys were undercovers, looked like big bikers with huge beards and hair. At the end, Lee had them pull out all the weapons on them and they had crap everywhere, a switchblade in their hair (no kidding), a hacksaw blade woven in a ponytail. Everyone was amazed at the amount, including the cops and instructor.

Lessons Learned- 1- Don’t mess around when they resist. Time and time again we’re seeing the perp pulling a weapon once they have the opportunity. 2- don’t press your muzzle against the perp you gun won’t go bang most likely. Make sure you have at least an inch or two between the muzzle and entry point. 3- really consider if being in law enforcement is worth it at this point.

Interesting. As a cop in a special unit we routinely trained contact or near-contact engagements. So we were aware of the possibility of Out of Battery Malfunctions. But I had never heard of the technique of manually locking the slide in place to force a contact shot. I'm not sure if I like it or not...but I can visualize a scenario where it might be necessary. Regardless, female cop did a good job of immediate action and re-engage.

Learned this trick a few years ago taking a class with an ex- British SAS as our teacher. Told us to put just our thumb up (no hand behind it) and push as hard as we could with our thumb as we pulled the trigger. Scary as shit the first time but after the 3rd or 4th time it's always been a fun trick to play on people when you go shooting with them and you say "I wonder if I could break my thumb off by holding the slide with it" or " dare me to shoot a round with my thumb behind the slide" lol. Just don't limp thumb it!

We need more of this? In Trump's voice - "WRONG!!" The weak female cop's failure to keep the guy from getting to his gun in the first place was the main problem here IMHO. A male cop the same size would have helped the other cop overpower the suspect from getting to his gun in the first place. Only problem I had with the gun jamming on the cop at a critical moment (which seems to happen a lot in close contact gun fights police get into these days) was not as surprising as that joker witness who sarcastically asks - "Do you need any help officer?" If I was the male cop who turned his head around and looked at that guy, I would have responded - "Now whatever gave you that idea?... A-hole!"

It's so frustrating seeing people die over this. Why take a gun with you to talk to police? There is NO scenario with ends with it working in your favor. Here's the scenarios: *Nothing happens and it didn't help you in any way. *The cops search you, find it and charge you with concealed firearm. *You use it to fight the cops and die, like what happened here. *You use it to fight the cops and kill them. You're a cop killer on the run and your life as you know it is pretty much effectively over. So why do it? Why bring a gun to talk with Police? It's only going to do nothing or ruin your life.

Male officer actually appears to have gained control of the gun almost immediately after thr first shot goes off. You can see it alone in his right hand as he maintains top position. Female officer does not know this though and had the mindset of protecting her partner. Male officer is clearly trained in jiu jistsu from how calm he was and his ability to maintain control. Solid work

@@DumbleDoff yeah after the perp shoots it looks like. He has it in his right hand around the time he looks back at the guy filming. It's easier to see in the original video. They do scuffle again but he has a decent grip on it from what I am seeing. After the short scuffle happens you can still see he has it at 9:10 and is even indexing his finger for safety lol.

Thanks for the tip! I suppose having a light may help keep the slide from making direct contact.

pretty sure I read an article describing a similar incident many many years ago and the author advocated for duty use carry guns to be equipped with a flashlight that extends beyond the front of the end of the slide a inch or so was the answer. In this way when making direct contact indexed by touch its the light making contact instead of the slide thus you don't have this issue of the slide getting pushed back and a dead trigger.

My Glock 22 had a Streamlight TLR-1 underneath. Rock the handgun downward, and the pressure comes off the slide as the projecting light takes it. Alternatively, if it still fails, we had the press option. If your slide is well-oiled, you can sometimes just pull back an inch off the target and and fire as it drops back into battery, but that's not exactly reliable with many cops' under-maintained sidearms. Thing is...she's using a Glock with a Streamlight TLR-1 as well, and still jammed it.

@@3081s1k you know watching the raw vid again a few times to me it almost looks more like she did not have a round chambered since she definitely appears to manipulate the slide. Could also have been making sure it was back into battery.

Did anyone else catch that the male officer disarmed the guy before the female officer was able to shoot (possibly even before she drew her gun)? I feel like there could have been better communication by the male officer to let the female officer know he disarmed the suspect so they could prevent having to take the man's life, but otherwise I feel it is justified.

Well if you look/listen close, the criminal says "You're not gonna shoot me N*gga" (Kid didnt even look black and was using that term) and then tries to grab the female officers gun... hence the need of a bodybag.

If you have an XD the guide rod actually has a flat piece on the front side that CAN help in the firearm not coming out of battery when pushed into or against the target. Which is a nice feature
