the way i learned from a trainer to get him to heel is to use his desire to go forward to your advantage. every time he pulls you pull him back and get in front of him. if he tries to go around to step to the side and block him again. when he settles down you move forward again till he pulls. wash rinse repeat. he will eventually learn that if he wants to go forward he cant pull.

Dog trainer here. Highly recommend the gentle leader head collar and their front pulling (easy walk) harness. I use a prong collar as a last resort tool. The head halter pulls down on the snout and pulls the head down in a way that they correct themselves. It's not like a muzzle as the mouth is completely free to move, but some dogs don't like the feeling of it around their snout

I know they look nasty but the herm springer prong collars are actually the safest for dogs. They apply pressure around the entire neck instead of just the front so it doesn't cause damage. They also aren't sharp. Their designed to mimic a mother dog correcting a puppy by biting its neck. Could not recommend them more.

We use a gentle leader for our Great Danes. It’s a learning curve since it goes around their snout, but is by far the best thing we’ve tried for walking.
@OutlawTwo

I've harnesses and they are decent if the dog is small or already responds to tension from the leash. The "prong collars" tend to be the most effective in my experience. A "no" followed by a corrective action in pulses until they have come back into the correct position. Consistency is key and once you have established that, simply saying no is enough to get the results you want. The collar becomes more of an assistive device at that point.

The thing with harnesses is that they were specifically designed for a dog to pull,even if they're a "no-pull harness". I wouldn't necessarily recommend getting a prong collar and putting it on and just start correcting him,if at all possible I would start with positive reinforcement and then once he understands what you're asking I would add in pressure,which would be the prong collar. The only reason I say start with positive reinforcement if you can is he won't understand what you're correcting him for,he doesn't necessarily know that pulling is wrong,if you start with positive reinforcement and teach him what you want then he has very little reason not to know what you're asking him to do and then you would add corrections and if he started to pull you would correct him and when he does what you want you would reward. Leerburg has some videos on KZbin that would explain that a hell of a lot better,my personal favorite trainer is Michael Ellis. They also have DVDs you can buy and online courses if you don't want to buy DVDs. All of this is just my 2 cents though so take it as you want.

We use “easy walk” harnesses. The hook in the front so when they or you pull, it moves them off center and they can’t get leverage. The ones that hook on the back only give them more leverage to pull (which is good if you want them to pull like a sled or something)

I highly recommend the general leader. My dog used to pull a lot, but it made her manageable. The only downside is that it she didn't like to wear it for super long walks and she got calices on her nose. It also takes a bit to get used to.

If you want something for the sole purpose of taking them for a walk then I would get a harness. Prongs are great no doubt about it I use them daily when training dogs. However that’s exactly what I use them for. When I pull out a prong collar my dogs get so excited because they know it’s time to work. If you want them to walk with you but in a heal position then a prong would be perfect. If you still want them to be able to pull and wonder around then go with a harness.
@Henny_81
@Henny_81 4 жыл бұрын
As a veterinary assistant, I suggest a harness. The poke collars can hurt his throat if he say, charged after something. The face leads are good too cause that controls the head. But sometimes that lead to them freaking out. It all depends on the dog. I would suggest a harness cause there is better control.

John is away great with the dogs, as are y'all. A dog training class would work great, but I actually learned really well from watching Cesar Milan on Dog Whisperer. It'll help with the few issues y'all still have, ESPECIALLY with walking the dogs... Butcher NEEDS to be corrected ASAP so that y'all don't have to worry about "retraining" while he's learning his protective/attack stuff. Right now, both dogs are pulling forward, in advance of y'all, putting their mindset into "protective/constantly actively scanning" instead of walking directly next to y'all without pulling, meaning they are "relaxed", even if they are still "attentive." The training is so freaking easy!!! It's also something John will be able to remember and use for the rest of his life. I love y'all bc y'all are ALL AWESOME!!!! 💜💚💜💚🦅🦅

I know it's 2 years later and no one will read this. I miss my old deck so much. Haven't skated in years now since it got stolen. I rock a size 13 shoe but I was used to the feel of 8.0 decks. Got myself the classic panda enjoi deck when I was 16, threw some Reynolds hollow trucks on it and some sec8 super soft longboard wheels. A set of sec8 8ball ceramics and that thing cruised me everywhere. I understand the tricking side of skating but there's nothing wrong with a "trick" deck with big soft wheels. It was transportation. Got me to HS. My college allowed it for getting around campus. The roads in my town are trash and there's a million pebbles. I would have gotten hurt so many times if I couldn't roll over basic debris. The big ol wheels were a necessity.

For the pup that pulls on the leash, there is a collar that is cloth with a loop of chain holding both sides together it’s called a “Petco Black Check Nylon and Chain Dog Collar” it’s the best one o found for using the “check” training methods. Also, my Doberman had to learn that when we walk. I say where we go not him. So as soon as he pulls on his lead I do a to the rear March movement and as soon as he catches up I turn around again and repeat a few times. You’ll find him glued to your movement as the Alpha because the Alpha take no shit from his pack.... well, unless it’s real shit...Alpha sighs and pulls out a poop bag....

You do know that Donut and words don't get along. I don't live there but I do live close enough to know that Donut can't pronounce a lot of city names in WA.

Those gentle leader things r great. If the dog walks too fast it makes the dog turn its head and they don't like it so they slow down.... It doest choke them like it. Ormally would if they walk too fast
