I really enjoy the way you present the instructions. No yelling, no excitement. Just a calm attitude and easy to listen to. It's really hard for me to believe you don't have a pilot license, just a lot of time in the sim. This should be something everyone viewing it should see.

Thank you for your kind comments. I don't have the money for a license sadly so I've been using flight simulation as a way to study so that when I do have the money, I shouldn't have to spend as much time on Ground School work so I can focus more on time in the air.

FSX has not only made me a fair simulator pilot with the help of videos like yours but to be quite honest it is sometimes difficult enough I also need to give it credit for my improved drinking skills as well. It has only taken slightly more then 300 hours of practice just learning how to take off and land the Boeing 747-400 the correct and safe way and do it pretty much consecutively each time but now when I get into the Cessna it's like going from a Tractor Trailer to a Volkswagen bug and having the much faster reaction scares the hell out of me some times. I guess The biggest mistake I or anyone else could make with FSX is starting out big instead of working your way up from the smaller planes first. It will sure save you money on buying alcohol anyway..LOL!

I fly the C172 pretty often in FSX but my latest landing was a bloody disaster. I needed three attempts as the first and second try ended in crashing the aeroplane. On my third attempt, however, I managed to finally land but had a tail strike. A FSX-flying session to forget! :D

I've been playing FSX lately. I was not really that good, mainly because of landing (all sorts of issues, overrunning, falling short, not lining up, not flaring). I just played the Hawaiian Checkout mission and passed. The funny part was as I was entering the pattern, the glideslope indicators were behind trees, and I don't like not seeing my instruments during landing. I stuck to the basics taught in this video of throttle for vertical airspeed and stick for horizontal airspeed. I still managed to hit the runway on the target and was actually able to stop. Excellent explanation of how to land a plane.

Keep in mind that you are making a very slow approach. Ideally in the 172, you put out your first stage of flap at 110kts, then at 3nm final stage 2 at 85, and reduce speed to 75. Final approach at 500 feet you reduce your speed to 70kts with third stage of flap. The slowest you should be going is 65kts which is final approach speed for short field landings.
@harryroberts3883 жыл бұрын
Umm I'm sure you've gained more aviation knowledge by now, but you never deploy flaps past 80kts; it is out of the safety white arc. That would damage the flaps severely

Nice job for not being a pilot. You're very close to what my CFI taught me. For landings, my CFI taught me to say a little rhyme to myself; "Hi or Low, Fast or Slow". This focused my eyes on whether the runway sight picture was high or low [and make the adjustment, if necessary], and if my airspeed was fast or slow [and make the pitch adjustment, if necessary. The other teaching was simple rudder inputs to keep aligned. Once I taught my brain this little rhyme, it changed my landing habits greatly. With so many possible things to think about during the landing, this little rhyme made me focus on the 3 basic inputs to master. Continue with the FSX. Hopefully soon, you can get into the real thing. Kudos! -joe

I learned to fly (the "real thing") decades ago, and in those days we didn't have much "electronic assistance". I can certainly state that if you had been doing these videos in the 1970's it would have made my learning experience far, FAR more enjoyable. I know you are a "Simulator" pilot, but have you ever thought of doing "The Real Thing"?? Expensive I'll admit, but there is nothing like "being up there", even in a small 'plane such as the ubiquitous Skyhawk!
@Doofer9118 жыл бұрын
Yeah the only thing stopping me from doing it for real is a lack of money at the moment. One of my life goals is to earn a Private Pilots License.
@phils46348 жыл бұрын
Doofer911 Well my PPL has lapsed owing to (significant!) old age and lack of regular flight hours! The problem was funds (check!) and the added issue of annual flight hours and continual education, especially since, my "real" job was pretty demanding time-wise. I would very much like to continue flying, but the cost of aircraft hire (VERY high in Australia) just to get the annual hours in is just too much. Don't even think of buying your own 'plane - our "entry-level" Jabiru's are bloody expensive (for what they are - no glass cockpit for you), and the added recurrent costs (insurance / maintenance / parking / runway fees) are very high. Joint or club ownership is a problem since there's not much fairness where the attraction of "getting up there on someone else's dime" is concerned (been there!), so unless you are of substantial "independent means" it can be a VERY costly hobby.

Doofer911 Just a question, I started using the same ultra realistic settings that you use, and I encountered a problem in flight that I am not sure how to fix. When flying the Cessna 172, when I extend the first stage of flaps and begin slowing, the plane starts rapidly ascending despite me desperately trying to decrease the throttle and descend. It ascends roughly 50 feet per 10 seconds, even when the throttle is idle. After roughly 30 seconds to 1 minute, the plane starts to descend as normal. I suspect the issue may be with the trim that I use for landing, with the wheel being pushed a few centimetres forward, but after some testing, altering the trim did not help. Do you have any idea on how to fix this? Thanks. EDIT: The issue may also be associated with my airspeed, usually I try to begin descending at between 70 and 80 Nauts.
@Doofer9117 жыл бұрын
More flaps = More Lift. Try descending between 60-70 knots.

I am not a pilot, nor have I received any training to do so. But I have flown several times in both large commercial and a smaller single-engine private aircraft. I also already know some of the terminology and parts of fixed-wing aircraft, but I found my way here [to this video] through your explanations of runway/taxiway marks and lights (which _somehow_ ended up in my video recommendations). One of the things I do not understand is how flaring works on landing. In the air, when you pull back on the control stick, the nose goes up and you increase in altitude. Also, airspeed is essential for flight and must be maintained at all costs (including the sacrifice of altitude to do so). However, flaring seems to contradict both of these- you are intentionally slowing down and yet changing your angle of attack relative to the ground. Additionally you will have flaps extended to maintain the air-stream across the wings, and gently deploying air brakes [as needed] until touchdown. Intentionally lowering speed, and also changing to a sharper angle of attack for the wings at the same time, is flirting with a stall! So, here are my questions (and this applies to all fixed-wing aircraft, big and small): When making a flare maneuver for the final seconds of landing, how is it that the wings do not act like a big parachute- creating turbulence, suddenly loose lift and dropping you like a brick onto the runway? Why is it that when angling the nose upwards for a flare, the plane does _not_ move upwards again away from the ground and instead continues to descend?
@Doofer9118 жыл бұрын
When coming in to land, the flaps will be deployed which generates more lift. So the plane has more drag yet more lift, so it can remain flying at a slower speed. The pilots approach the runway with a speed buffer, they'll be aware of the stall speed and will approach the runway slightly above that so they have a little safety buffer. Also, the flare is designed to reduce the vertical speed of the plane. So as it's approaching, the plane may be descending at -400 feet per minute. If it landed at that vertical speed, it'd probably break the landing gear, so the flare reduces that vertical speed to about -100 feet per minute to make it a much softer landing.
@EVAUnit4A8 жыл бұрын
Okay, so you slow down because you want to reduce the lifting effect on the wings, I get that. Extending landing flaps increases lifting surface at lower speeds and increases the area of the flying surface(s). (And the opposite is true for faster-moving fixed-wing aircraft, such as supersonic jet fighters- reducing wing size/vehicle profile/silhouette decreases drag further and allows air to move more effectively around the vehicle.) If I may use an analogy to get my point across... When riding in a car (drivers, don't do this! =D), you lower the window and stick your hand out, fingers extended and palm to the ground. If you tilt the leading edge of your hand up, the force of the air pushes up on your hand. The same principle works during flight (although a fixed wing aircraft has more efficient/essential aerodynamics to deal with)! At the same time that the hand is pushed upwards, there is also the drag of the passing wind which also forces your hand backwards, 'slowing' it down. So, by extension, pointing the nose of an aircraft away from the ground both increases drag but improves lift. On the other hand, the pilot has intentionally reduced engine power because, well, that runway is only so long and eventually you want to come to a stop! I can understand touching down first on the main [aft] landing gear first- because they both support the majority of the weight and are the center of balance for the plane on the ground- and then touching the nose gear lastly. But how is control maintained when you are intentionally risking losing the lifting effect of the wings by angling them in such a _non_-aerodynamic way?
@Nirond8 жыл бұрын
i saw you were quiet busy on your landing, i would start full flaps on Cessna, it could give you easy 75 knots to land at 500 ft per M, your plane did not landing itself because of the configuration between speed trim and flaps, however good video !

Great Tutorial as ever, I'm slowly getting to grips with FSX. I'm trying to concentrate on getting my landings sorted, but I'm a bit unsure as to how far out from the airport you are beginning your descent ? I seem to be getting in line etc, but I'm nearly always too low and too far away from the runway. I'm also usually too fast so end up ballooning up into the air when I cut the throttle and attempt to touchdown. Well done again on the superb tutorials :)
@Doofer9118 жыл бұрын
+Matthew Hinchliffe It varies depending on how you approach the airport. What I usually do is aim to be at 2000ft above ground level at 6nm away from the airport. That should get you pretty close to the Glideslope, then you can follow it down to the runway. As for the speed, you want to be coming over the threshold at about 55-60 knots. Then as you flare the speed will come down a little further and the plane should settle gently onto the runway. It is a lot to try and get right in one go but stick with it! It will become second nature

In a C172R, power 1500rpm and 95kts = 500ft/min. For each degree of flaps take off 10kts, flaps 10 85kts, flaps 20 75kts, flaps full 65kts. Final should be full flaps 65kts, adjust power for descent rate and just hold the airspeed with pitch.

Beautiful landing :) Just curious, this was VFR landing right? Or did you use ILS? Thank you.

Isn't there any way of increasing the contrast in the Virtual Cockpit? It's for that reason that I always fly in the regular cockpit. Thanks for a fine series of FS tutorials, I've learned a lot from you. Perk (:>)

Not that I'm aware of. It might be possible to download a mod or addon which will change the cockpit textures but nothing in the base game that I can think of.

i always wondered how did they program the PAMI/VASI lights? I mean how did they make it so that when you're too high it's all white while when you're too low it's all red while you're on the glide slope it's both red and white
@Doofer9118 жыл бұрын
I think the basics are that the lights are tilted at slightly different angles. So the lights don't change between Red and White, they're always on. It just appears to change depending on what angle you view them from. And each light is tilted slightly which is why you see them change one at a time.

Amazing video ones again as I am running thru your series. Am I the only one that finds the landing quit long or is that the standard time for a good landing?

+Peet du Toit Hey Peet, thanks for your comments! By long, do you mean that the plane "floats" a little before touching down? That's normal, it's only if you get about halfway down the runway and your wheels still aren't on the ground....that's when it might be a problem! ;)
