The deadliest and one of the most bizarre shootouts in the history of the West happened in the tiny, outlaw town of Ingalls, Oklahoma Territory in 1893. Three wagon loads of federal Marshals went up against the last of the horseback outlaw gangs, which had members of the Doolin-Daltons. Other gang members included Bitter Creek Newcomb, Arkansas Tom, Dynamite Dick, all dead shots and all game. When the dust cleared one of the outlaws not only survived prison, but made a movie, went straight, then back on the outlaw trail and died while babysitting. Like I said, this was a bizarre one.
Bob Boze Bell is known as America's Western Storyteller. He is an artist, author, writer and serves as executive editor of True West magazine. Bell is a popular, sought-after figure in television documentaries about the Old West, appearing as an expert in dozens of Wild West history shows. Bell won an Emmy Award as Executive Producer of the PBS special, Outrageous Arizona, a zany look at the state's centennial, that he also wrote and helped direct. As an author, Bell has brought to life Billy the Kid, Geronimo, Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp and Wild Bill Hickok in his best-selling Illustrated Life and Times series. His books Classic Gunfights I, II and III are must-reads about the most important Old West gunfights. Bell’s Bad Men is now in its fourth printing, while his illustrated autobiography, The 66 Kid: Raised on the Mother Road, gives personal insight into the passions that have driven him on his lifelong quest to interpret the history of the American West for audiences around the world.

I can't help but wonder if Arkansas was killed near the child he was babysitting; if that was the case that shows a complete disregard for the safety of the child. Complete and thorough work. I picked up the latest edition of True West magazine and have been reading about Johnny Ringo's death; amazing and thorough. I love the maps when you need to explain locations.

The details are sketchy but I think it's safe to say he tried to get away and only shot when he was clear of the house and baby. But that's just me being romantic, perhaps.

Alan Rockman Yep, "Arkansas Tom" - LOL. Killed while babysitting years after the Doolin-Dalton gang's demise. What a story. This gunfight inspired two Country Rock classics - The Eagles' "Desperado" album with songs like the title, the theme "Doolin-Dalton" - "Desperado", "Bitter Creek" about Doolin-Dalton gang member Bitter Creek Newcomb, & Poco's "Rose of Cimarron" single about Bitter Creek Newcomb's loyal girlfriend. Pity her brothers didn't care about love or loyalty. They gladly participated in both Bitter Creek's demise - ultimately Bill Doolin's too.

Good story and research. Am from Oklahoma and all my relatives moved there from Arkansas. My Great Aunt Zela used to tell the story of when the Dalton Gang rode by their shanty house in the country when she was a little girl. She said her Dad recognized them and quickly gathered everyone in the house. She could see them pass in single file along side them thru the cracks in the house walls. It left quite an impression on her and really shook up her Dad.

I went to Ingalls OK in the summer of 1996 and there were no town buildings left at all - only remnants of stone foundations. There was a monument to the fallen Marshalls though. There was a log cabin that had been moved there from another location - maybe a former one-room school house IIRC. Basically just an empty field in the middle of nowhere. I understand that they have now moved old buildings (replicas) onto the property.

Really enjoyed your video! Great work! I lived in Stillwater for thirteen years back in1964-77 and taught at OSU. I roamed around the area a lot and to Ingalls several times. It was already just a shell of its former self but interesting because of its association with the Dalton-Doolin Gang. I also found some inscriptions carved on a boulder on the north side of the Cimarron River (five miles or so south of Ingalls). As I recall they were dated 1890 and perhaps included the names of some of the outlaws. After I moved back to Texas in 1977, I regretted that I had not followed up on my earlier explorations, but by that time I was busy with research in my field. Still have great memories of Oklahoma. Thanks a bunch for bringing some of it to life again.

I love how the law was so toothless by modern standards. Nowadays if your involved in anyway with even pointing a gun at a cop your story outside prison is over. Even tangential involvement in a crime where ANYONE dies and murder charges. Back then, if you only winged a deputy you were home for supper.
