Gaming thinks it's hollywood these days, trying to tell these cinematic stories. Some have success with it and tell awesome narratives, whereas most just copypaste Hollywood style storytelling into their games and think they did a good. Doom Eternal knows what it wants to be, and people LOVE it.

While i am aware that the first half of the OP was a joke, i can actually answer the second half with the question. More games aren't like this since the demographic is only 1 group (people who love carnage and destruction...which in hindsight is almost everyone deep inside). Most games try to be as widely accessible as possible to attract as many customers from as many age groups as possible, but doing so makes them not take any risks and tend to result in very mediocre, unoriginal, cliche products.
