DOOM Eternal | The Ancient Gods Part 2 Review. The time has come to review the last DLC for DOOM Eternal, and I have some mixed feelings about it. Nothing crazy like some people in the community, but I was overall very satisfied with the Ancient Gods part 2. Within the video I also talk about the toxicity and divisiveness that happened after the release, shared my thoughts about it, and how we can overcome it as a better community. Shame there's still some things that aren't resolved. After watching the Doom lore from Acidglow's channel, let's just say I had hoped the Demonic Crucible was going to play a role in all this. Remember, when the Slayer retrieved it, this was BEFORE Deag Grav's death, which means the Khan Makyr had NOT de-powered his space fortress. Therefore, at the time of the Arc Complex, the Slayer didn't take the Demonic Crucible simply to be used as an auxilary battery for his fortress. Furthermore, the intern made it clear that Hayden knew the Slayer would come for the crucible. But I still have my own lore theories about the Demonic Crucible, if you're interested to hear it (though this WILL have to ignore the lore we got from the DLCs).

Another thing that I feel the Doom Chad (pro-players) should consider is that Doom Eternal can no longer offer a proper challenge for them specifically because they are 'too good' at the game. Perhaps the Ancient Gods 2 isn't too easy, but instead, what they used to consider a worthy challenge is not a challege for them anymore due to their increase in skill.

They chose fun over difficulty, and I have no problem with that (I’ve been playing since launch too). Yeah some arenas do feel a bit empty and somewhat rushed, as well as the Dark Lord fight being a bit underwhelming. But it was overall a really good DOOM experience, the hammer completely changes things up and it’s a ton of fun to use. I’ve only played TAG 2 around 4 times now and I like to think of it as a more “relaxing, less sweaty” experience.

As someone who works 12hrs a day i dont have patience for a higher difficulty playthrough, so I stick to the default difficulty and I'm still struggling with the Dark Lord fight that regenerating health is driving me crazy. Also bro dont sell yourself short, I prefer your videos over Midnight.

Nightmare is the default difficulty tho lol the game is literally designed around nightmare and the lower difficulty are just nerfed versions of it lol

It's disappointing to hear that people had a couple gripes about the game and decided to review bomb it. Based on what you've said and from what I've seen the DLC looked good. From the footage you showed of the last fight, I can see what you mean by it being underwhelming. I was expecting him to have large sweeping attacks and/or quicker smaller attacks, leaving little room to get damage in. I was expecting more of a match for the player, but yeah, he doesn't quite seem like it.

I had a good time with the dlc. I agree with many of the criticisms, but none of them made it an actually bad dlc. My personal main issue is that they killed off the dark lord himself soo quickly, and not with a cool battle or even a sick ass glory kill. They totally shouldve used this dlc to build up the dark lord further, and save everything for a third installment of doom where things further build up to the most epic fight ever with the baddest mofo in hell.

Literally so upset by this. The dark lord has potential to be the coolest doom character. But we got some lore that goes nowhere and a weird war hammer battle that is kinda fun. And he’s officially dead forever now as well. So no more cool dark lord. Really should’ve had the dark lord strip you of your weapons at the end and seal you away and have the next game be about delving into hell to kill him I honestly the biggest problem with doom eternal bosses is the lack of glory kills. Bfg on spider mastermind is iconic. Kahn makyr punch and icon stab are way less cool.

Tbh I was just kinda disappointed by the Dark Lord. Some of the arenas felt a little underwhelming, but none were actually boring. I think the new demons were pretty good but could have been executed better. Despite these issues, it’s still Doom Eternal. So it’s fucking awesome.

Yeah, would have been so cool if a whole bunch of bunnies had come out into the arena after the Dark Lord dies, or even just a cut scene showing bunnies peacefully grazing as the demons fizzled away. I found the hidden bunny in TAG1 by accident, am wondering if there’s a hidden bunny in TAG2 which I didn’t find yet .... 🐇🐇🐇

My biggest problem with the final boss is that he regenerates way too much if he hits you and especially when you hit him at the wrong time. For more casual players or who don't have super reflexes it can be hard to avoid his attacks and so he keep regenerating which can stretch the battle into a really annoying lenght.

Ditto.... a painfully long stalemate can occur if one does not have lightning like reflexes. I didn’t even die in that fight, but it took forever, to run around building back health and armor, before moving back in to try to get that green flash to happen, but more often than not just getting tagged again by that incredibly hard to dodge shield attack. My hand went numb more than once.... by the time I finally killed him, there was no exaltation, just exhaustion....

Exactly. The first time I fought him I gave up after 15 minutes becaused I was just annoyed. When I tried again later I used a trainer to do more damage so it doesn't take 4 or 5 times of stunning him to finish one phase.

Thanks for this calm, reasonable, rational review. Subscribed... Am not sure where I would fall in your categories of players, certainly not a pro, ultra nightmare is beyond my abilities, maybe a low intermediate; hundreds of hours in Eternal and TAG1 and 2016 attest to my love for the game. For sure Eternal helped me get through this past year of the Covid nightmare. For TAG2, I really enjoyed it, the first three levels at least ; but am hoping in the future ID/Bethesda might consider re-working the final Dark Lord fight a bit, or a lot, to make it far more interesting, and far more playable and fun, for a guy like me, over 60, a bit handicapped, but still wanting to enjoy the game and be a part of the community. The Dark Lord fight was just a re-hash of the Sentinel Prime gladiator fight, with marauder characteristics. And while I loved the gladiator fight in Sentinel Prime, and had a blast with the buffed and possessed marauders in TAG1, the Dark Lord fight just turned into a stultifying stalemate for me, where countless times I wore his health bar down to within striking distance of finishing off the bar with one more green flash opening, but then he wouldn’t flash green, and would tag me with his ridiculously hard to dodge shield attack. That turned the fight into an exhausting ordeal, certainly nothing pleasurable about it. But that’s just my two cents worth, am going to play TAG2 again, and again no doubt, until I get better at it...

I liked this vid. Just got past 1st level of TAG2-- loved it all! Escalations part one and two were just great fun. Loved the bit with about 50 imps who made a glory kill/bloodpunch orgy. Looking forward to levels 2 and 3. Doom Eternal forever!

For me personally I was let down and didn't feel it was worth the $20 (but like you said in the video, I'm pretty stingy with spending money on games). I feel my opinion was swayed heavily by the highs of the base campaign and TAG 1. Eternal is in my top 3 games of all time for sure and I've been a doom fan my whole life. The base campaign was incredible and TAG 1 was even better. With all the build up this just fell flat. I enjoyed my time with it and it wasn't bad by any means, it just made me feel "is this it?". Just an average end to an exceptional game. I just wish they didn't have the one year deadline. I can't imagine this was the product the talented people at ID truly wanted. But none the less, I greatly appreciate all the time and dedication ID has put into this game and it's community.

Hugo explained in a stream that it’s not really retconned just badly explained. Davoth didn’t create doomguy, he created the slayer. His plan to use the slayer failed and eventually led to the the moment we are at now. The mysterious voice that yells no isn’t the dark lord

This DLC Is good, I was surprised that instead of fighting hordes of harder demons, I was always surrounded by Imps, though they overrun you, the arena can be simply cleansed with a frag, I hated the ever doing same thing six stages Marauder dark lord showdown, but the final Let me happy, and waiting for a DLC or the begining of the next game playing with someone new, trying to rescue the Doom Slayer,

Yeah I agree with you I would give it a 9/10 I'm 37 now and I've been playing doom since the beginning and I've always loved it and since doom eternal I've felt like I have my childhood back which is brilliant review bombing or just being a di#@ doesn't help doesn't do nothing but hurt the game and why would anyone do that I don't know I mean for god sake they have spent the last year working from home give them a break they still managed to get both dlc out and made a really good game.

Where improvements could be made definitely the hell guards AI and hit points increased is a main one for me to be honest I really liked the other demon's the chaingunner I'm not calling it anything else it has red armour and a chaingun it's a chaingunner lol but I felt what would have improved them is adding more in the fights where they appear at first I was like wtf how do I kill them but the part I enjoyed the most about them was it made me switch my mods on the rocket launcher which I didn't do before but what made them easy for me was the lack of them in fights if an update includes more of them in fights scattered more about in groups of three say it I believe would increase the the challenge and you know throw in some snakes because then it's like okay lock on mod for the snake's remote mod for the chaingunners but these are things that can come in time with updates. The last boss I don't know how I feel about it I really enjoyed it I found it to be one of the most fun boss fights I've had only thing that I could think to improve it was maybe adding more different attacks to him other than that I really enjoyed it

the DLC is good, but just lacks... something! i think mayo said it best, TAG1 was really good because of surprise encounters. there arent that many in TAG2 and the fights sort of feel the same throughout, especially on reclaimed earth. only the end of world spear is somewhat memorable, while everything sort of mixes together. immora to me was a letdown, there was a lot of times id be walking around and expecting more demons but only a few would spawn or even worse, just the pathetic guards. again, only the end arena in immora is decent, everything else blends together.

I still dont see how it's not difficult. I still struggle with the second escalation encounter in the first 2 levels Sure, not as bad as TAG 1 at first, but now I get through tag 1 pretty easily even before the nerfs. I beat it on extra life mode nightmare and only lost 5 extra lives (btw, take back rune doesn't work in extra life mode)

- What troubled me most in the dlc is the poor storytelling. We are jumping between 3 different maps with no real linkage other than kill the dark lord. The lore that was given was conflicting with the first DLC and especially main campaign of eternal and 2016. I feel like they rushed the storytelling a lot and didn't factcheck it well with the previous installations, which is a shame for lore nerds like myself. - The map of immorra is also a bit dissapointing in my opinion. Once all sentinels enter we barely get to see them up until we reach the wall, which really is a shame. Besides the red soldiers being laughably weak, we also never see the ones with pike axes at any point in the game. The boss fight was also a bit broken since I had to restart a couple of times since he didn't flash when he was supposed to and like you said it is easy to figure out and not memorable. - combat wise I really missed the crucible. we spend so much time acquiring it in the campaign and now we just switch it out for a hammer? It does not make sense to me, they should have made it like the unmakyr/bfg9000 so you could switch. While the campaign was enjoyable, it definetely feels unpolished in a lot of aspects, which is a shame. The ending also was such a bummer and does not make a lot of sense other than keeping it open for a sequel. I would have enjoyed it more if it resembled TAG1 better.

For me the dark load was an awful fight but the fights felt much more like basegame fights imo. My favourite part of the Ancient God Part 1 was how everything kinda synergised like the rooms would feel like they fit the demon like the maurauder fight in Atlantic and it had tight areas where you would fight dreadknights and the carcasses felt like the were used the proper way in basegame and part 2 they kinda just feel like they make random walls in huge arenas so they arent an issue and the carcass almost always spawn with weak unimportant enemies. In part 1 especially atlantica they were fought in a lot of tight spaces where the shields genuinely felt like an obsticle and not a mild inconviniece and they were pair with big demon that you would want to kill quick but the carcass would defend it. I felt the arena design was a major step down.

I def agree with the 8/10 rating. I think what can sum up a lot of the gripes with this dlc is it seems very rushed. I understand that with what's going on and all but it feels like while we got an amazing experience with TAG pt 1, pt 2 just feels lackluster. I really like the world spear as it feels long, has fun arenas, and nice platforming. The other two levels just feel short and not very interesting past being cinematic. The new enemies are nic but apart from the armored baron they just feel like reskins with a random ability they thought up on the spot. Immora feels like the biggest letdown though, it felt short, didn't have very many arenas, platforming wasn't cool. I like how when we went to urdak we flew around on big boosters and got a sense of how big and grandiose it's meant to be. Immora just kinda feels like a glorified 2016 multiplayer map, just technological hell, not a lot to look at. Hell soldiers really take the cake, dying in one hit and missing half their shots really just makes it feel like they threw the bare minimum in for them. All in all, though I liked the lore and while being easy was a lot of fun.

I prefer 2016's bossfigth style than with green lights, but overall tag2 was good. Its easier difficulty made a little lack of satisfying battle, but it was ok. the progress was lighter and faster because of that. But the purple slime fountain was too much for me lol

I just watch in awe at people playing Eternal. They're whipping around the arena switching weapons a few times a second all while on super bacon deluxe nightmare mode or whatever it's called. I find the game challenging enough on hurt me plenty difficulty. I'm 30 and just don't have half the reflexes of these players. Also I'm a terrible shot. If the reticle isn't a huge circle on my screen there's a good chance I'm missing several shots.

What's easy for you is not easy for 95+% of players. ID won't have the funds to build games if they sell less than 5% of what they did now due to difficulty being to high. I'm super happy that you're a DOOM expert, it doesn't mean the game has to cater to you specifically. Plus, from what I understand there are mods out there that could encounters more difficult. You also don't HAVE to play with all weapons and abilities if you require an extra challenge.

On the contrary, I am quite average at best of times yet I merely support the idea that Doom Eternal (not the entire franchise) should inherently be a difficult game like the Souls games and the likes. Why? Because Hugo once said "You have to earn the power fantasy" and thus your victories. As for these mods, they ARE indeed great however, I am not gonna start downloading and unzipping countless extra files, with the potential of fucking up in the process (I am not THAT tech savvy) JUST to have that challenge. And before you tell me that there are guides, let me stop you right here cause I've seen them. Still, not confident in my ability to install them. If it was integrated on the regular main menu then sure but like this... As for not playing with all the weapons and certain mods... yeah not a fan of this idea. I love the ENTIRE arsenal. That's why I said I am average at best! Yes I love the difficult challenges and I stand by my view that Doom Eternal should by default be unfairly yet logically difficult (yes even in the campaign) but not to the point that I start downloading third party mods and start following those rules that I don't like JUST for the extra challenge. For me a challenging base game is more than enough. No need for extra dressings if you catch my drift.
