Doom's E1M1 (Hangar) Gameplay, But It Was Converted to Grayscale & Colorized

This is gameplay footage of map E1M1 (Hangar) from Doom/The Ultimate Doom, but it was converted to grayscale and colorized with DeOldify. This was some idea I came up with recently, as I wanted to experiment with the accuracy of the colorization of black & white videos via special software.

I'm honestly somewhat impressed by the results, even though it's objectively wrong much of the time, it's close enough to seem like it's more correct than it is. It plays it safe with lots of desaturated earthy colors, which happen to look natural when applied to a broad range of subjects. It also recognizes outdoor areas and colors them pretty well asside from making the dirt too green, in fairness it doesn't match the skybox for some reason.

Confirmation bias also helps the effect. I've noticed it seems to strobe between different colors on certain surfaces, I wonder if it's intended to do that to harness confirmation bias.

Hmmm...The colorized grayscale reminds me of the old days, when TV stations would air black & white movies, the board operator would sometimes forget to switch off the NTSC Colorburst signal (often after coming back from commercial), resulting in a picture that looked kinda like this.

It's like the software forwards the footage into the late 2,000's so it can cohabitate with all the other dismal, sepia-toned hallways that were springing up at the time. Not a one-to-one, but still evocative. Keep tinkering with it. Just don't try anything stupid with FIREBLU or Terry Trap rainbow text. I suppose you might have a project in mind that involves color conversions, but you'll do a crappy quadruple feature to cleanse the palate and stall for time. I'm looking forward to seeing more curio from you in the future!

I am the creator of the Alien Interactive Story. You asked if there is a backup or offline version. I am sorry to tell you but no, the full game has been lost to time. Someone offered to make an offline version back when the game was still online but it turned out to be way more work than they thought. All we have is the incomplete internet archive version sadly... and our memories. Thanks for playing, and the kind words about the game!
