I got it... Thanks for the Jaffa Cake Edit: I remember the crowdfunding and, because of some odd legal technicality under English Law, anyone who donated to get the time to the last race was defined as a shareholder so I can quite truthfully say I was an F1 shareholder which has worked surprisingly well with the boys and girls Incidentally, when the debts started getting called in, High Court Enforcement Officers attended during the filming of the show "Can't Pay? We'll Take It Away" because the two JPS liveried cars were sat in the factory in a stripped down condition. Because there was some issues with payment, the High Court Enforcement Officers decided to take the cars as they were and a mechanic actually started to put old tires on to stick on a low loader. When the episode was broadcast, they never blurred any of the footage from inside the factory so other teams actually watched it on the late night repeats to gaze right inside the stripped cars and the factory to see what they were up to.

why did the two lotus teams not just combine? werent they both struggling for money?
@GregBrownsWorldORacing26 күн бұрын
Eventually Pastor showed up to team with Grosjean & he brought a few dineros. Prior to that I think the two teams could have merged their debts. There wasn't much cash coming in from much of anywhere. According to Matthew Carter: We were selling Free Practice seats as often as we could to bring in as much money as possible. Pastor had it in his contract his seat was never for sale. So Romain was missing a lot of free practice. So much in fact that Grosjean developed a real hatred for Joylon. We took the engine out of Kimi's winning Lotus & sold it for cash, I was laying off as many redundant people as possible, but I was an accountant, it was harder for me to know which people were redundant in an F1 team. [That's not a quote, that's just my recollection from several podcasts I heard featuring him]
@duncansnowden685725 күн бұрын
There wasn't much love lost between them due to the fight over naming rights. Team Lotus (i.e., Fernandes) felt that Group Lotus (the car firm, i.e., Proton) had done the dirty on them by cancelling the licence just to go on and sponsor Renault, and Group Lotus felt that Fernandes was, frankly, being a bit of a bell-end in buying Team Lotus from David Hunt then telling all and sundry that he was the real Team Lotus while Renault was just a sponsorship deal. (Personally, I thought he was in the right at the time, and still do. For what that's worth.) By the time it was all, relatively amicably, sorted out, with Fernandes agreeing to sell Team Lotus to Group Lotus and carry on as Caterham, he was not Proton's greatest fan. I think he was probably quite pleased to see they were almost as deep in the muck as he was, quite honestly.

I think when Tony Fernandez rebranded the F1 team to Caterham in 2012, it was an effort to sell more Caterham cars. But here's the problem that hindered Caterham (as well as Marussia and even Spyker during the indentity crisis the former Jordan F1 team had in the late 2000's) - it's not a mass manufacturer like Ferrari or Mercedes, but rather a niché brand that produces/sells up to say 100 cars yearly. And between 2012 and 2014 (when the F1 team was around) Caterham Cars was operating on a loss. BTW, Caterham was also delving in other projects such as a motorcycle division in Moto2, but that faded away quickly.

On paper, they were the most prepared out of the new teams that joined 2010 even though their entry was confirmed later. They had the best driver lineup and had the right people. However, 2010 was the only year where you could say they met their expectations. 2012 was the start of the downfall given they were the only new team to have KERS and only managed to finish 10th thanks to the last race in Brazil when di resta crashed out as Marussia with no kers and still using cosworth were occupying 10th thanks to Glock’s performance in Singapore. It’s not a coincidence as well that Fernandes started losing interest, given he had the ownership of QPR by that point.

I also remember being just as sad as you are that these 3 teams didn't make it. I think Bernie did more to hurt them than help them. I never liked him. Without these teams giving new drivers a chance, we have the (stupid in my opinion) scenario where all 20 drivers who ended last seasons F1 started this one. I already said months ago that I wouldn't watch F1 this year, I have gone off it a lot, and I dislike some of the commentators and presenters, Being average at NASCAR shouldn't get you a gig presenting F1 I watch Formula E, WEC, ELMS and a lot of drivers from those 3 failed F1 teams have managed to show how good they are in those series. I would like to check Indy NXT sometime, it doesn't seem to produce big stars looking at past champions but there are a few very interesting stories behind some of the drivers there, and 2 of them are Irish (like me).
