"John" is my generation. And I agree with him. I am youngest of 6, council house, working class background. Worked (and still working) hard, 40 years in the same "company". 10 years without a pay rise. Wife retired recently from 38 years NHS specialist nurse. I am not rich, but I am happy to pay tax and spread the assistance to all who need it. Love to all who live and breathe.

@chester6343 Pension isn't anywhere near that tbh. We lost our daughter and my wife did not work for few years after that. She was an L&D nurse for early years and couldn't imagine working with toddlers again as our daughter was one. She volunteered as a class room assistant for KS1 kids, then did a degree to retrain as a teacher, then at the last gasp decided to go back to nursing, was then part time for the majority of the remainder of her career. Took us 10 years to get out of the debt we were in living off one wage for those years she didn't work. But hey, all that is too much information 🙄 I wish no-one to have to struggle and for all to get the help they need, when they need it.

@@robwakelin5559 I'm sorry to hear that, it must be difficult for you both. Taxes are a difficult one for me because whilst I see the merit in paying towards a better society it's very prone to becoming mismanaged.
@Indijana
@Indijana 4 күн бұрын
@chester6343 It's already being mismanaged. The problem is that it's mostly working classes who are paying the price for it, and the richest people are hardly taxed. Instead they get tax exemptions. I bet most of the mismanaged money ended up Tories pockets, who already are the richest in the country. So... that's the scale you deal with.

It’s all regurgitated spin… you don’t understand what starmer achieved at all. He had to bring together a huge amount of different people and constituencies to win that many seats. To do that - especially in a deeply hostile media environment - yes, required him to use vaguer messaging etc. you can be Corbyn and make a very focussed message to a small demographic and lose, or you can play to win. He won, big time. The vote share is irrelevant. It’s the seats.

Totally agree., How much is enough? live in Australia where the aged pension is means tested. I was unsure about that when I first arrived but having seen it action totally agree with the concept. One of the first we noticed when we arrived here was that the wealth of the country is much more evenly divided amongst the population . Not saying it’s perfect though. It’s more work for the state and staff who have to know what they are doing but most people qualify for at least a part pension and a concession card which covers things like doctors visits and medications etc. Also because not everyone gets the maximum it means that it goes to people that really need it so consequently it’s more than the uk state pension. Countries such as Germany and Australia started planning for an ageing population shortly after WW2 but successive governments preferred to just kick the can down the road. And now the chickens are coming home to roost ! The triple lock is actually unsustainable. Sadly the uk has been living way beyond her means for decades. Labour governments in the uk have been used to spending money rather than saving it so I think we are in for some very interesting times and could face the prospect of bankruptcy if not careful.

My parents in law fit into the category I refer too, they are currently selling a house in which they bought for 300k, now for 795k. They’ve decorated and put in a new kitchen in the last 15 years. Why cant tax just be simple? What money comes in to your account? Pension, work, cap gains etc... anything over say 30k tax it at 10% then 50k 20% 100k 30% etc etc... so state pensions are tax free but some boomer on final salary pays their FAIR share. Then a similar method for businesses so you can't hide your money in business and business expenses

Glad tories are gone but just found out that starmer is reinstating jaque smith to be a mp and the only way to do that is give her a peerage, so she won’t be accountable for anything in the commons. It’s torie game all over again.

My assumption was that you only got a state pension if you didn't have any money. I can't believe someone who is "comfortably off" would be entitled to a state pension.

I think it’s silly to paint Starmer as some sort as saviour, my cat could have ran against the Tories and beat them such was their despicable record especially over the last 7ish years and their contempt for ordinary people. Let’s see if the NHS does improve, then we can clap Starmer. It is wrong imo that politicians can choose to parachute themselves into safe seats even though they have no affiliation with that area, the ppl that worked on behalf of those ppl should be allowed stand.

REFORM would have got no seats if people knew about the SDP. If the SDP got any news or media coverage, they would take a lot of votes away from Tory, Labour and Reform. But they dont say sensationalist things like Farrage, they are just a very normal party with very normal values and goals. I'd really like to see the SDP get more publicity.

I voted Labour this time, and I usually wouldn't. If I'm anything to go by, I would say don't mistake the quantity of the numbers with the depth of those numbers. Meaning, while I am a responsive voter who looks at the terrain that we're approaching in a given timeframe and voting on what I think is best suited for that, I have absolutely no loyalty to Labour or any other party. If I feel that they betray the mandate, if they march back into far-leftism or start reintroducing observably terrible ideas I'll simply go elsewhere. I think I might be like many of the voters who decided to vote labour this time around.
