April 2010 saw the eruption of Iceland's Eyjafjallajökull volcano, which caused Europe to become an ash-strewn no fly zone, causing millions of flights to be cancelled. But this seems to be just the start. The Icelandic volcano Katla has started to swell and grumble plus two more giants, Hekla and Laki could erupt without any warning. Iceland is becoming geological monster and when the volcanoes erupt the consequences could be global. In this documentary atmospheric scientists look closer into what the impact would be if there was an eruption and also how we can prepare ourselves for the aftermath that would follow.

Don't know if you'll ever read this, but here goes: Laki is NOT an independent volcanic system. The Laki eruption was the product of a deep injection of magma from the nearby Grimsvotn system, similar to what happened in Holuhraun in 2014, when the underground magma tunnel formed all the way from Barđabunga, 100km away. The reason our geologists are still keeping an eye on the Laki region is the connection between the Barđabunga and Veiđivotn systems, 200km apart, with Laki sitting directly between them. Has nothing to do with the fissures around Laki, because that's all they are: Fissures.

Before you watch this… just know it’s made for Americans that love a good doomsday story

Speaking as an Icelander, the beginning of this video is the most American beginning of a video I have ever watched. "Killer clouds" "Doomsday volcanos!" Icelanders live with the threat of eruption every day but we hardly ever consider it. As a nation, we have lived through so many of those eruptions that it just doesn't affect us that greatly anymore. We know what to do when it happens, until then, we just go about our day. This video was much more dramatic than it needed to be.

I have a question, what measures does the Icelandic government take to mitigate the effect of a possible eruption? Like survival education of the public or bunkers, etc.

You are wrong about Iceland having the unique volcano they can study from inside. The Azores islands have one two, and it’s genesis is quite similar. It’s located on Terceira island, I’ve been there 3 times. At the bottom we can find a crystal clear water lake. The volcano name’s “Algar do Carvão. You don’t need a lifter to get inside, they built a tunnel to get there.

If you guys want to do some studies and get footages about volcanos, come to Azores, in such a small place you can find all types of volcanoes genesis. Since effusive to explosives.

Very much true. The last Grimsvötn eruption at 2011 was 10x bigger than Eyjafjallajökull 2010. The climate situation was different and the impact was short time and mostly local. Not a big deal. Bardarbunga made history by the volume of ejected material. The fortunate part was that it had the intrusion and a fissure eruption instead of the main caldera eruption under an ice cap. 1,3km2. That is a alot more than Kilauea in 2018. Remote location but the SO2 made some problems locally. So again, not a big deal.

Curious to know: when you compare results from the UKMO, ECMWF and GFS models, do you exchange results, maybe with some extra processing, or are you running a copy of the code for each of the other two models on the computer system in Exeter?

As the Earth ages it cools down internally and there will be less and less volcanoes which is good. But if it cools down to much we are really screwed. No magnetic field.

The planes would not be grounded now because the standards have changed. Previously NO level of ash was considered OK. now, there are 3 levels of ash and all flights are only grounded if the level reaches high.

This is the real cause of climate change. The 23.5 degree axis tilt is the heat generator that never stops and ,very slowly, heats the earths core.Sometimes it is halted when the crust is damaged as in the Yucutan asteroid strike or Krakatoa type eruptions.OR,when we use atomic weapons in anger as in 1945 leading to the devastating winter of 1947.WHAT IS THE CAUSE? The oceans ingress the core and cool it,if not the heat keeps increasing, migrating north and south creating wildfires in both Oregon and Australia.Volcanoes are just the safety valves that are supposed to stop overheating ,but, our natural heating system does not incorporate THERMOSTAT,THAT IS,OTHER THAN THE OCEANS INGRESS. So, there you are,the 1945 atomic strike on Japan gives you the magic pill to stop climate change,BUT,science just keeps ignoring me so,due to ever increasing volcanic activity,I predict another great dying event.Bob.
