I always think big weapons are fun, but this is ridiculous! Can you beat Elden Ring with only a Hand Ballista? Well you wont get there without a lot of blood, sweat, and tears...mostly tears, this run drove me to madness.

Technically you could have made the Gideon fight easier by beating Malenia first, which would have added Scarlet Aeonia aka "That one spell that forces the user to sit still for ages" to his repertoire.

Thats true! I also realized at the very end of the playthrough that you can ready the shot and not fire, then when the NPC enemies start the animation you can fire it off and they get hit (I actually did ready the shot then dodge out of it several times, but It wasn't until the final npc fight that I realized how useful that was. oh well, something to remember for the DLC!

@@DoomWolfOfficiala little late but your extremely correct. That’s how they are. When at full hp they will occasionally throw a black flame fireball or a strike, but for the most part they wont attack when at full health.

I just found this channel, and I enjoy the vibe of the videos. Also like that they’re more bite sized, a lot of challenge videos for ER are pushing nearly an hour. If you’re taking suggestions for DS3, I’m throwing this around to a few channels: Can you beat DS3 with Farron Sorceries only? Originally, I was thinking Farron Flashsword only, but you can’t get that until after Vordt. Though expecting anyone to kill Vordt with Farron Dart and a +2 Sorcerer’s Staff, might be too much. But, there are 4 Farron spells, they’re all underwhelming and FP inefficient, but they are fast and combo. There’s also Aldrich and Lorian as mandatory bosses, and they have high magic resistance.

The Ballista would be way more viable if the shot animation and the reload animation were separate. Pressing R1 to reload after each shot might be tedious but it would be way safer. Having a dedicate reload action would also differentiate crossbows and ballista from bows and great-bows: bows you can shoot whenever + plus hold the button to delay or cancel the shot, while crossbows need a dedicate reload and the shot can't be cancelled but they can be shot with one hand.

separating the shoot and reload would make the ballista WAY better, I don't really know what that isn't a thing (I'm sure it's intentionally not a thing, something about making sure the attack is committal) but let me tell you it sure did result in me being smacked around a lot so mission accomplished I guess lol

The one thing I'd wish they change about the Hand Balista and the Jar Cannon is that you are no longer forced to reload everytime you shoot but instead you reload whenever you want to

I actually did the Rykard questline with just the jar cannon, and all I can say is dang. The first two fights were somewhat easy, because they each had one attack I could shoot at. Juno, however, gave me more trouble than he did on an rl1 run. I had to mix up my bag of tricks since he would dodge anything I threw at him normally, and this led to some terrain abuse, some perfect timing when he went in for an attack, and a whole lot of attrition! No matter how many bolts I put in him, no matter how rapidly i spanked the back of that gun, it felt like was never enough. I had to reach, like, a new plane of thought. Still beat him, though. Edit: I'm sorry, but once something like 22:53 happens, it's all over.

I don't recall if I mentioned it in the video or not, but near the end of the run (like the actual last NPC fight I had to do) I realized you could hold the attack button, then just wait for them to try to attack and they would be locked into the animation lol, would have made most of the fights WAY easier. Gratz on reaching a higher plane and beating him!

I usually uses godricks great rune for the overall stat increase, but since the ballista doesn't scale with anything it really would have only helped with health and stamina, but yeah I really should remember and use them more lol

@@DoomWolfOfficial I hit quite a few walls actually. Namely, Niall, Godskin Duo and Maliketh. Sadly I didn't have as much luck with Maliketh as you did. Nothing in phase two was punishable as he would not stop attacking... ever. So after about 50 tries (not an exaggeration) I called it quits. I'd also like to add that I brought in two friends who came in equipped with the exact same gear as me for the Duo. I don't really feel too bad about it because I wasn't recording for a video or anything and it was all just for fun, really. After watching this video I feel like its possible for me. So I'm going to try again. \[T]/

I understand about Maliketh though, back when the game first came out I dreaded the fight, but eventually he just kinda clicked for me! I'm sure he will for you too! I know that this is an older video, but, a small trick about the ballista and cannon is that they can be aimed and shot slightly faster after jumping. They seems to have a pseudo jumping attack where you will aim up attacked fire just a little bit faster if you press shoot while in the air. This doesn't change the reload time but *DOES* make the whole process a tiny bit more forgiving.

a few thoughts. 1- I love your timing, narration and editing. what is with me finding so many challenge runners and enjoying their various deliveries? second, Ballista-bashing is legit, fire giant was just fine. as was mighty booting in Rennala P1.

I live for ranged combat, but I find the games from this company don't share the love i do for ranged combat... the ammo and consumable limits seriously bother me. but it's the kidn of game i want to beat a few times, then see what the modders are doing to expand on it.

5:05 the "mist" there is just a standard smokescreen, the (VERY strong but low hp) imp enemies in the area then agro on you, so if you don't know to grab immediately and RUN you get back attacked and probably instakilled. and yes I realized that was probably not a legit question when the streamer said it, but I am bored and there may be a few people who didn't actually know that

Looking back at this video a year later, and after trying my own pseudo challenge run of bow/greatbow only, I am surprised you didn't use a lot of attack buffs, or at least it didn't look like it in the video. I'm not saying the buffs would have made it easier 😅, but it would have made some of the fights faster. Another thing I found out is that using both arrow talismans is pretty much mandatory for bow/crossbow runs since the default range is a lot smaller than it seems, and the Arrow's Reach talisman provides a massive boost to range - which results in more consistent damage, and safety since you can shoot from further away without damage fall-off. As for talismans, I almost completely abandoned defense when I realized how severe the 20 great arrow/bolt limit was. Two arrow talismans and Ritual sword, were pretty much always on. And depending on the boss, I would either use Ritual shield to be able to tank a single hit, or some other utility talisman to support the build. Either way, great video. I love your commentary and video style. Simple and effective. ❤
