It’s a happy ending , they can’t live without each other. They keep their relationship secret and it makes them happy that somehow they got back together after so many years apart and regrets and his own insecurities in mix. I really like the fact the director chose to leave the ending scene open. The only thing the ending gives are small, almost unnoticable clues that tell us that they actually ended up together, and if you didn't notice the clues then you probably thought that it was a sad ending. It was almost as if both leads were trying to hide their secret relationship even from the viewer's perspective which I found a genius way to end the series.

The intro in each episode is hinting that the two are still seeing each other which is set in japan (in the train station) If you will look closely, japanese characters are written on the train platform ( it reminds of the Japanese movie, “My Tomorrow,Your Yesterday” it has the same vibes of the train scenery) That’s why it means on the last episode, the two are secretly dating, and secretly meets in Japan.

For those who think the ending is sad, you are wrong. This is a happy ending, after they hugged, the director only made footage of their respective work lives, this proves that they had a secret relationship so that both parties wouldn't get hurt. Why is that ? Doona is an artist and Won Jun is a civil servant, it is very dangerous for civil servants to have relationships with artists openly, because if there is a scandal or problem then the government could also get into trouble, and Won Jun's career will be DESTROYED in an instant by FANATIC FANS. and Doona will be easily used by the government as a political tool because they know their employees have relationships with artists that they can use to drive the PEOPLE. why am I sure of a happy ending?? because before hugging each other intimately, they did something that had been done before, namely the ritual of making peace and making up, Won Jun regretted choosing to end his relationship with DOONA when DOONA had the option to date secretly... and he apologized to DOONA, so this scene shows that they continued DOONA'S PLAN is to date secretly and become strangers in front of many people to protect each other's careers.

It's a happy ending guys. The director obviously didn't do an obvious happy ending for Wonjun and Doona prolly out of respect to the webtoon. So he leaves this up for viewer's own interpretation. I could see he added the intro for each eps as a hint. During the end scene, we could see how these two noticed each other's presence when they were walking down the hallway. During that time, we could see the talented Doona noticed but she was looking unfazed because she was always good at acting, even Wonjun said she should actually be an actor. While the inexperienced non celeb Wonjun looking quite panic as he was walking at the opposite direction from Doona even relief a sigh pointing that he doesn't want to cross path with Doona. Pointing out that, he didn't want anyone to notice them being at the same place. If he and Doona broke up. There's no reason for him to smile at a sight of cakes. In the whole series, Doona has a sweet tooth. She ate ice cream for lunch, she baked cookies. When he saw that cake, he smiled because that reminded him of someone who loves all things sweet. If the relationship didn't work out, he would ignore the cake as how he ignore all Doona's posters and ads when he was walking in the subway. An act of trying to erase her from his mind. But he was doing quite opposite this time. The intros also giveaway the idea that these two met secretly even without Doona's company permission like how she did when she went to meet him secretly.

For me, I like to believe that the ending suggests that through the years they have carried on and maintained their romantic relationship BUT they have chosen to keep it out of the spotlight and away from prying eyes, especially Doo-Na's handlers/fans. They are very committed to one another regardless of what city they're in. A FEW POINTS TO NOTE: **The clothing that Woo Jun is wearing (the tan raincoat) at the beginning insert of the episode when he and Doo-Na meet by the water is precisely what he wore when he was escorting that Japanese gentleman where he nearly came face to face with Doo-Na and her peeps. **Speaking of that Japanese guy, we see Doo-Na arriving at that building plus signing autographs for people outside but then WHEN she walks inside and goes down a long corridor we can see and hear people openly gasping her name out loud and as she walks by these people, we see a closer view of her walking down that hallway and to her right is another corridor which is where the Japanese guy + Woo Jun had come from (so they almost T-Boned each other) and then the Japanese man turns his head to his right and looks at Doo-Na who had just walked by him and is continuing on her way. Woo Jun then quickly comes up behind the Japanese man (so HE WOULD HAVE seen Doo-Na walking by) AND then Woo Jun quickly ushers him away to head towards the opposite direction which is where Doo-Na just came from. Finally, another tell tale sign is that after avoiding Doo-Na in the corridor, Woo Jun lets out a big "Whew" as if to say "that was close", as they almost came into contact with each other which is what they have worked so hard to avoid. **Doo-Na's record company president agreed to let her have more of a say in what type of music she sings, the songs she writes and puts out etc.. So she's in Japan promoting her recently released album. The name of the album happens to be called, UNDER COVER. Think about what that name means to their relationship which is under wraps and hidden from the world. They were obviously aware that they would both be in Japan at the same time and that parting shot from the series showed us that because Woo Jun was busy working, he was able to remain professional while he was escorting that gentleman as they happened to be in and around Doo-Na's bubble. She couldn't help herself though and that's why she turned around to look in his direction. I believe that when you've been with someone for a long time, you would be able to recognize their personal scents (such as cologne and/or perfume, shampoo or body washes etc..) especially if you pass by them OR are in their vicinity.

Thanks to those that interpreted a happy ending - that Doona & Won-Jun maintained a discreet but well cherished relationship. I think Won-Jun admiring the intricacies of the Japanese cakes was a nice touch. It’ll be impossible for WJ not to know Doona will be there. I hope they have a secret relationship otherwise the show has no purpose. Why would you give up the man whose love helped you recover?? There are some clues about the secret relationship. That scene in the beginning of episode 9 and also Doona's speech when she tells him they need to mantain a secret relationship for a few years. Also the way Doona asks him to express his regret by using the same words she used when they made up after she left him. In that scene he seems ready to accept some sacrifices like a secret relationship. Plus they are both in Japan at the same time. Coincidence I think not.
@ferociousbananas Жыл бұрын
There are many reasons for not restarting a relationship. It's possible that closure is all they needed, and they no longer rely on each other the same way because of their completely different lives. They also broke up on bad terms, even if neither of them wanted to. I think it's entirely possible for them to just go one with their lives and reminisce about their past. However, you're right, there are also so many ways and reasons that they would get back together. I much like an ending where they both live happily ever after, together.

My 2 cents: At first, I also thought it was a sad ending and ended up in this video and chat. Now, I think some clues point to the main characters having a secret relationship. First, I agree with most about the scene about how he smiled when looking at the cake (episode 9). I reviewed past episodes and it does show Doona having a sweet tooth. Second, was how they recreated the begging scene. When it was Doona who begged at first, Won Jun said that it may seem he was difficult to persuade during arguments but the opposite is true and they easily made up. When it was Won Jun's turn to beg, He also seemed difficult and even asked Doona to leave him alone, but he easily cracked when Doona said that she missed him. The third clue for me was the intro scenes in Japan. It does seem like they are keeping a low-key relationship and are secretly meeting in Japan. Even by chance, it would be very unlikely to meet in a foreign country let alone be in the same hotel in a country as big as Japan. In the last scene where Doona looks back (the video editing emphasized this scene) and Won Jun breathes a sigh of relief, it gives a subtle clue that they are aware of each other's location. He seems adamant about trying not to go in the same direction as Doona. It may infer that he was purposely trying to avoid her in public. This is me being cautiously optimistic about the series. I do hate open-ended stories and the frustration led me here. I really wished it ended clearer.

I think the happy ending is right there in the intro. There is a scene in the beach where all main cast are all happy, especially a laughing Doona who now looks like an ordinary girl with PIGTAILS--something she never wore around them before since she always looked like a primadona. This scene is in the future because Kook Su-Jin--Won-Jin's friend from home--is also in the beach. Remember, Kook SuJin has never had interactions with the other housemates until that scene (except for Jin-Ju and Doona's brief fansigning) This all happens by the time Doona is established enough to date without worrying about her daily dating life, like she promised.

Or perhaps once she got back on top she took him behind the scenes of the K-pop world. I thought their relationship would continue for at least a while. They would try while she was famous. It could’ve been in secret. Or like he mentioned before by doing a press conference. I don’t care for one-night stand relationships in a drama. It kinda felt like that cause of the ending. The main character whose was a super fan never found out about the relationship. I thought that was crazy. So many missed opportunities here. I think if they do a season two they could fix all of that though if they do it right. Show them having a secret relationship and the best friend finding out years later. His family finding out about his relationship too would be nice. Great beginning but lacking on the ending.

Much more if you are both a kpop idol. You be always seeing handsomeness and beauties I don't believe you will be able to restrain to like someone in that zone. Poor idols. Be open to dating y'all! Like its a normal thing of life. Only once you'll go through a certain age. These idols are making us happy all the time. Cut them some slack.

As a native Korean speaker, I am sure it is a 100% happy ending, but the director might have added a little twist for some people who want to make up their own ending. When Doona says 'I don't need you in my life anymore', it doesn't mean that she doesn't want Won Joon. It means more like 'I want you but not because my life still desperately needs someone'.

The album name in the end, Under Cover, is a reference to Kwon Eunbi's Underwater (a song from her album Lethality). She's a real life soloist who was also the leader of a successful but short lived all-star Kpop girl group, Iz*One. However, Kwon Eunbi has a differenct personality from the character of Lee Noona, so it's not a direct reference.

Some people have made some great points as to why this is a happy ending, and they are indeed in a secret relationship... 1. They are both in another country *Japan at the same time. (weird coincidence considering they had managed to avoid each other previously for years) 2. Won Jun smile at the cakes, thinking of Doona's sweet tooth. If they had parted ways he would look at the cakes sadly with regret or longing not happiness. 3. Doona in a previous episode already planned out how the secret relationship would have to work and that last scene seems to fit that plan. 4. I havent gone back to check yet but someone says that they're still wearing their couples rings in that last scene. 5. The scene before, they reconciled so why would they walk away , and then we see in the very next scene that they are both in the same place in Japan. I still would like a special episode to clarify their secret relationship but will just stay cautiously optimistic for now. #Doona ❤❤

I think the opening scene is a reference to their closure. They were always at the rail tracks in the previous episodes, it could mean that they were stuck there because of how bad their break up at the train station was. In the episode where they made up, the first extra clip shows that they are not in the same place anymore, somewhere nicer. I think you're right about the last scene. It could also imply there that they are now going in separate ways without any hard feelings from each other as like you said, Won-Jun looked happier. After reading the webtoon, I think it's pretty similar with the drama. Won Jun is now able to listen to Doona's music as I think that's what he was doing when he had an earphones at a certain scene; at the webtoon, he became Doona's fan and congratulated Doona for her success. They were not able to get back together but they were able to move on with their own paths and be happy for each other.

Same place in a foreign country (Japan) with him wearing the same clothes (coat, shirt, tie etc) he's wearing in the vignette at the start of the episode. Why would they meet up in a field in Japan AFTER the final apartment scene in Seoul if they weren't together? And I don't think the public eye factor is supposed to be at all subtle. It's what she wanted to do 4 years prior, and what he regretted not doing in the apartment scene. Why would you track down an ex of 4 years to get that confession if you had no intention of getting back together? Plus, it's also what her manager basically says to him leading to the breakup in the first place - that he wouldn't be in a position to date her for 4-5 years. Well, it's been 4-5 years.

Won Jun should knows that the song Ordinary days was about him, she tried to communicate with him although not being able to be by his side. That’s why she was so angry knowing that he’s not in the battle together, instead, he gave up.

For me, the ending of Doona! reminds me of Lalaland ending. They know how their love was real and deep but they move apart and live now in very different worlds that would avoid their relationship as they knew it before the come back of Doona as idol. It's an happy ending nevertheless as they are sure of their feelings for each other and happy of what they lived at that time.

It’s obvious they are together 🤦🏻♀️. Doona sings Ordinary Day which is her stay with me song for WonJun. She asks him at the bar if he listened to her song. Won Jun is seen listening to music after his interview. Also, he steers his boss away from Doona abd breathes a n obvious sigh of relief bc they are secretly dating.

One other clue for the happy ending is that in the scene right after his exam, Won-joon is seen in business attire walking in a park with earphones. What is he listening too? Is he finally listening to Doo-na’s music? The next scenes are of Doo-Na performing. Interestingly we can’t hear her singing. Is this because only Won-joon is hearing her in his headphones? He seems at peace in the park. Has he finally made peace with what keeps her away from him? This doesn’t resolve the debate, but it does suggest that at the very least he is over his hurt and abandonment, and he is living up to his promises not to hate her (after makeup sex) and to enjoy her singing (beach scene). They are clearly not together in a conventional sense, but I think that emotionally they remain faithful, and something is definitely happening in Japan😊

Posted many months ago, but accidentally deleted. The final "Happy Ending" is very clear to me: the penultimate (second-to-last) scene before they cut to both of them being in Japan, Doona returns to Won Jun and they clearly make up. She went out of her way to run to him to ask him to say (1) he's sorry, (2) he regrets not chasing after her and allowing them to drift apart, and (3) he says he's missed her after she first says "I missed you". The emotion is clearly "lovey dovey" and the camera even pans a bit to the left (where the bed is located). He is very happy when shopping in a cake store in Japan and obviously they've synchronized their calendars to be at the same place. The fact that they are walking in opposite directions is only a metaphor that each is doing his or her own thing (she's an idol, he's now a Civil Worker) BUT they are doing different things in the same geographical location: that is, they are no longer separated by space or time. They merely have different jobs and both of them were very private people anyway, so it's okay that they keep their relationship secret for the sake of her career. She herself said that she had planned to work for a few years enough to make money so she wouldn't be worried financially (this happened when she tried to convince him in an earlier episode to remain together even while he went to serve in the military). Logically, there is also NO reason in the world for two lovers who never stopped loving each other, never cheated on each other, and already said they are sorry to each other and have missed each other (with tears and a deep amorous hug to boot) will end up breaking up. They would end up in that bed located next to them that the camera pans towards as they hug in Won Jun's bedroom/apartment, which Doona went out of her way to visit after she had already returned back to her luxurious apartment after first visiting Won Jun and cried upon seeing the sunset, which reminded Doona of the morning sun she watched with Won Jun the morning after they had made love in her childhood (grandmother's) country home. She felt empty without him. Personality-wise, it's also consistent that Doona is not the type to give up on love. Even though her manager didn't treat her well, she was hooked on him like an addict (there's the suggestions he's both a father figure and perhaps lover, but married, and thus not free to be with her; she even patterned her smoking habit to mirror her manager's chain-smoking). Doona even runs into the street shoeless on her birthday after the manager has left her a birthday present without saying hello. Doona has a great need to feel real deep love she has never felt from a father she never had and a mother who abandoned her. Her manager gave her a career as a child so she was fixated on him. But the way Won Jun looked at her and treated her was "tender" and a "profound love." He also never betrayed Doona. He was hurt that Doona ran off with the manager, though she returned to Won Jun, after Doona chose Won Jun over the manager. Doona's personality, craving a real love and someone who would never abandon her, would not be the type to let a loving Won Jun go. She also knows that they are both similar: both are very private, both have loved a person with what they perceived was unrequited (unreturned, or at least, not fully returned) love. But in each other, they have similar, yet different, deep love that will never betray. Plus they are hot for each other physically. So clearly they are keeping their relationship secret. When Doona looks back towards Won Jun, there is not look of "surprise" on her at all. She knows he's around. And he was smiling while there. Clearly, they were going to hook up later. In a few years, celebrity Doona would announce -- as many idols have done (e.g. NS Yoon -- see my Wikpedia note on NS Yoon. I contributed the part about Same Bed, Different Dreams 2 and her husband) that she has married a non-celebrity she has dated for years and thank her fans for her loyalty. That is the sequel not filmed here, but we know that will happen. Yes, it was a metaphorical ending, but not an open-ending. It's clear that they are hiding, even to us. The filmmakers won't even reveal to us that they are secret dating because that's how private Doona and Won Jun will be about their dating. It will be their private happy world. Happy ending!! Others here have correctly commented that the metaphorical ending where they are hiding their relationship points to how idols and actors are forced to suffer in their private lives by having to hide that they are dating. In that sense, the end scene elicits our compassion and unstated argument against this regrettable situation that not only affects the idols and actors, but their beloveds. In the case of Doona and Won Jun, however, they can bear it happily because they've resolved their relationship into a happy union. They survived his military separation and her being an idol and busy. Won Jun waited for his first love his entire live, and it is clear from the scene when he sleeps with Doona, that it was his first time. He saved himself for when he would fall in love. And Doona was the right woman for him to share his soul and body with. She, though apparently not a physical virgin (she took charge in the lovemaking scene, and she picked up a guy in a bar, which hinted at that she's done so before, and it seems she's slept with her manager/father-surrogate), was a spiritual virgin. She had never made love to a man who loved her equally, until Won Jun. Again, there's no way this couple would ever leave each other when they both are super nice and love each other. It just wouldn't happen. He was okay with her career and she with his. And they are clearly coordinating their schedules to be at the same place and time. That's love:making the seemingly untenable irreconcialble schedules and lifestyles synchronize. In time, they will be together in a more normal way. But what is "normal" anyway? Isn't love always a compromise turning uncertainty into a win-win? Addendum on October 23, 2023: The fact that the ending is to be interpreted as a metaphor is signaled at the beginning of episode 1, where Doona is shown to be "drowning" as she simultaneously performs on stage. Since she is not literally drowning, yet they show her falling into water and being submerged (swallowed up) by water, that's a key that there are figurative/symbolic moments in this drama. And as so happens in literature and movies/dramas, there is often a "frame" structure at work. Here the frame that in an otherwise "realist" movie (I am speaking of literary realism as a movement, not the everyday sense of the word: in literary realism the story, whether print or film, attempts to mirror the verisimilitude ("realness") of life -- instead of being realist, the start and end of the drama (episodes 1 and 9) begin and end with metaphor. But whereas Doona was drowning in the opening of episode 1, in episode 9 she confidently walks around, interacting as idol with her fans, dutifully accomplishing her work. And that's because in her life (and in Japan), she has her love. Thus after showing us they've made up, the director metaphorically shows that although the world of the idol is still plagued by a lack of freedom, having someone to share one's life helps make it a bit bearable. The drama is called DOONA, and begins showing only Doona, but later we see both Doona and Won Jun in a "long shot" together in space and time, though each is working their respective jobs. See above for more details about this end scene.Addendum #2 on why the ending is in one sense "sad" though the two are happy in a secret relationship: I certainly would have handled the ending differently, and like others here, personally prefer a clearer, less metaphorical and happier ending. Even if Doona and Won Jun have found true love and are sharing/at-least-partially-enjoying a secret relationship, such a situation arguably is NOT happy, since it's straining for poor idols and actors to have to hide their love. In that sense, we may perhaps speak of the ending as "successful" rather than "happy" insofar as the drama showed how even people in mutual love are forced to suffer due to current Kpop anti-dating rules by companies and CEOS, and by overintrusive so-called STANS/FANS, who often descend into stalkerdom and uncaring views about requiring their FAVS to be unattached so they could enjoy fantasizing about one day dating them, or whatever reason they are against idols and actors they allegedly love to date and marry. Fun to think about alternative interpretations. I get that. But I do believe they are happy at the moment we see them at the end of episode 9, and thus, I stick to my intepretation that they are a couple enjoying a secret relationship. Addendum 3: In ep. 1 (from 42'12" mark to the end; I fixed a typo re: the second time) we learn that this story is told as a flashback from Doona's point of view, and later also Won Jun's flashbacks. Hence the end scene in episode 9 is not the end scene in the story, it is actually the beginning, so the story is told in a chronological loop. Another reason this was a happy ending. In fact, that the author/writer are playing with "time" is underscored that this scene of Doona walking to take a seat in class next to Won Jun is repeated twice in succession. Doona at 43'23" calls their meeting an act of destiny. That, my folks, are positive words told in flashback.Postscript: After reading so many of your kind comments, I wished to gift you one of my "for fun" KZbin Kpop playlists (I've got others) I put together over the years. I added three of Miss A's BOPs at the top to honor Suzy and the other Miss A members, who already showed great acting talent. well its a common thing for an idol not to date specially a non idol partner. clearly, doona protected the one person she wanted to be with. she fought for her love, she looked for ways to be with won jun. remember that she surrendered her cellphone, no communications in the outside world, guarded 24/7 coz her agency was afraid that she might escaped again. but with won jun, she made sure that she will find a way to be with him. though won jun was ready to give up, to be hurt in silence, doona made sure of her feelings for him and trying to win his pride and trust to save their relationship. although we were expecting an ending were we will see them together, the two proved that love is patient, love is willing to wait and love is worth fighting for. this maybe a true to life incident with many idols. they are not free to love. their fans are selfish and only wants their idol to sing and dance for them. they hate to see their idols to be involved in love. they hate to see their idols to be with someone whom they do not approved of. and many idols sacrificed this part of their lives and fall into depression, anxiety and loneliness.

Billboard shows 2027 but texts are from 2023 that you can see. They are messages he sent when she didnt have her phone. She got her phone back and was reading old messages. 42-44 just repeats what he said about different worlds. Neither of these implies a happy ending. I do still believe it was a happy ending. I think that the biggest sign was when Doona walked by cake shop and a fan noticed her a said "oh thats Doona, she is so pretty" right as Wonjun comes out. He directs his superior in the opposite direction to avoid running in to Doona and he even breathes a sign of relief, like "oh that was a close one"

Also Won-jun wears the same outfit in the prefacing scenes of episode 9, showing Won-jun and Doo-na meeting by a lake and as he does in that final mall scene in Japan.

I just finished the last episode after bingewatching it. Could not believe how angry and frustrated I just was and cursed. I don't understand the ending. So googled "Doona ending explained". One website said that is was impossible to think that they should not date in secret. The other one that they definitely broke up. I hate this sort of ambiguous endings. It was very clear that Won Jun, being heartbroken and 4 years single could not live without Doona. What i liked about this drama was that for a change, we saw the main characters physically attracted to each other and end in bed. Because in most Korean drama's that is not the case and imo not very relatable. This could only be a Korean or Japanese drama. Because where else can celebrities not have a private life and pretend they don't date or have a lifepartner? Pretty sad.

I don't think the ending is meant to be ambiguous beyond simply being a homage to the webtoon (perhaps). The final scenes, combined with the post-intro vignettes (in episode 9 especially), aren't subtle,. They're both in Japan, in literally the same area, and he's wearing his civil service outfit (a cream coat covering a white shirt and black tie) in a field with her during the day. This places that scene after the final scene where he's wearing the same clothing and smiles as he's looking at cakes (also in Japan), whilst she's walking the other way. Even if you rationalise them being in exactly the same place, in a foreign country, at the same time, why would they then meet up in said country if the relationship was finished in the apartment scene? Plus, the real challenge they had in their relationship was the one laid out quite brutally by Doona's manager: she couldn't afford not to obey her agency, she couldn't afford anymore public scandal, he was 21, and between graduating and military service wouldn't be in a position to date her for 4-5 years, & therefore should walkaway. Doona wanted to continue the relationship quietly, and said that after 2 years or so she'd have more freedom again. He dumped her instead. 4-5 years later the obstacles are reduced to the peculiarities of Korean celebrity culture.

@@jwt-nu3ei After I wrote my comment and before i had read yours. I watched all the intro’s again. And allthough i did not recognize Japan in those scenes. I could see by what he was wearing. It was several years later after they had met. And i was not aware of the webtoon. Thanks for clarifying it to me. Because i would have thought that 2 years later it was possible to date. But it is allready about 5 years later. Anyway. I dislike endings where i have to search on the internet to get some understanding. 😉

I totally agree with you ,that unclear ending is very disappointing. We all watch KDrama because of love. And I believe that this love story in "Doona" is an incredible, unforgettable, unique love story...4 years have pass and ,,neither has gotten over their love for the other,,Neither of them has love life,,,,they live only for work,,,they act like empty bodies,,They still love deeply each other..So the ending is very clear for me❤

This show reminds me of the KBC World drama special episode ‘ The Red Teacher’. It ended similarly with characters crossing paths and looking at each other. It’s upto the audiences to predict the ending.
