Based on feedback, I think it would be fun to do a “dash off”. Order from 10 restaurants, simultaneously. Put a tip on half, and no tip on the other half and see what happens. Thoughts?? And thanks for the engagement on the topic. We are obviously going to disagree, but I love hearing both sides. Thank you!!

I use DD a lot, and I make sure to always tip, I think DD and most other food delivery services should just increase their actual delivery fee and give the increase to the drivers (and remove tips), this fee can be based on a distance to restaurant calculation or something. That way people don't have to rely on "tips" and customers can stop tipping based on a percentage as well which is silly in the delivery business.

I definitely think pay transparency would help. Pay for the amount of time, and the amount of distance. Don’t rely on the customers tip as part of the pay.

DD should just offer $2 a mile and charge that as a flat fee. Add their $2 fee for them on top of that all as a mandatory fee. Take it or leave it. Dashers get their pay, customers almost always get their food on time. Everyone is happy.

I was looking at some screenshots from last December and the base pay back then was $4.25 or $4.50. Now it's $2 or $2.25, so they cut our pay in half. Peak pay is rarely offered and it's hard to make as much money. I have no idea who would purposely not tip even $1, I always tip when I get something delivered. There are good people out there though since I have had some who added to the tip after the order was completed. Thank you to all the good tippers!

Agreed! I would NEVER order food or anything for that matter, and not tip I'd be too embarrassed. It's been my experience that if someone says to leave the food at the door, they are usually not Tipping because they do not want to face you. I too work for Doordash and have noticed the base pay has been cut in half. When you add that on top of no this and the price of has has doubled under the fascist Biden regime, the side gig is no longer profitable and I'm wasting my energy and tearing up my car delivering for pennies so I've decided ots no longer worth it. Doordash still sends me text updates letting me know it's busy if I want to work but last time I worked I made less than 10 an hour just not worth it. Good luck and hope those GREEDY/STINGY People who don't tip get to feel what it's like when others EXPECT SOMETHING FOR NOTHING.

Yea, i don't deliver food with no tip and low base pay. I declined this one order from MCD for $4 with no tip (I'm in DC and we see tips in advanced), it was very close, 2.5 miles but i didn't want it because it was to a skyscraper. They sent me another order for $6.25 also 2.5miles to a school. I took it, was in the same parking lot as the MCD so i just walked to the store, as soon as i confirmed order picked up, they sent a pop-up for guess what, that same $4 order that i originally declined 😂, they said it added .02 miles to my route, i laughed so hard and decided $10.25 was worth the 2.7 mile drive so i accepted it. DD can be sneaky but I respect that play on their part. The apartment was next to the school and I was parked at MCD waiting for an order to I was literally the best person to deliver both orders. I just hope people learn how to tip. Even just $2 to bump a $4 order to $6 can make a world of difference to you getting hot fries.

Yeah, I tend to think almost all tipping should be no less than $5 unless it it something that I am prohibited from doing myself. Like valet of the car when all they do is drive it into an adjacent parking lot. Those guys only get a buck, sorry. But yeah DD is usually 5 bucks unless I know they had to drive more than 5 miles round trip. Then I’ll try and tip 1.00 per mile. A lot of rural people do t think about this. And grocery delivery I usually will do 10%, and 15% if the order was accurate and timely. I think the good tippers like you really help us out when we get a no tip.

You are very welcome. For what it’s worth, in most areas, $5 is considered a fair/good tip. Assuming 2.50 from DD and 5.00 tip is 7.50 for about 20 minutes of work. Around 20 bucks an hour. I tend to tip around that amount unless the store is a long distance. If the store is 10 miles from me, I tip $1 per mile. I’m glad you commented as that was just my intention to inform. A lot of people think we are employees and paid an hourly wage. We aren’t. If we aren’t on a delivery, we make nothing. And no benefits. I’m not complaining, I like it!! I’m retired and it is good side income. Again thanks for the comment!!

Side Gig Guy, I'd rather sit idle in a parking lot than accept an order that will pay less than $2 per business mile driven. Focusing on earnings per hour isn't enough. You need to consider if you're covering the cost of operating your car to deliver those orders. Remember, according to the IRS, it costs you $0.655 per mile to operate your car.

That's not how it works. You can't just keep raising your prices regardless of the actual value of your service. Doordash and similar services are already charging twice what it would cost somebody to just go pick up an order themselves. That's already an absurd delivery fee that limits the company's clientele to only morons and people with more money than they know what to do with. Pushing it much further than that would just put them out of business. It's a myth that the cost of operating your business can just be passed along to the customer without limit. The customer determines what your product or service is worth, not you.

I’ve worked for door dash for 4 years. I’ve got some basic rules on orders. 1) Minimum of $4.50 - $5.00 depending on how I feel and how busy it is. 2) A dollar a mile for every mile that I have to travel. 3 ) There are several restaurants that I refuse to go to for any reasons or payouts. One always takes too long after I get there and the other has a homeless guy who basically lives in the dining room and they do nothing about it. Those are my only two main rules. I’ve heard several customers comment/ complain about how expensive delivery is. I just remain quiet about that but the idea of any job is to make money and if it isn’t economically advantageous to do it then it won’t get done. I don’t know of any restaurants that have forced a customer to order so if you don’t like paying: go get it yourself. It would shock most people with how many $3.50 / 2 miles orders that I’ve refused. Obviously, there’s no tip on that order so that’s a order begging to be declined over and over. I don’t expect a $10.00 tip for 1 delivery but a few dollars is good.

I drive for DD and I see the tips as an incentive. Most people that don't tip up front will not tip at the end. Gas has skyrocket in price as well as insurance. We know when someone doesn't tip and will decline the trip. I pride myself on delivering food on time and hot. Apatments are the worst when no explanation is given on location. Certain restaurants are notorious for taking way too long on having food ready making Dashers look bad.

I literally had to wait an extra ten minutes while zero tipper got delivered to first. I have most certainly driven 20-30 mins away from an area that has dash orders popping, to deliver an order for $8. It sucks ass to then have 20 mins to drive all the way back to a good area. It is most definitely ok to not take an order if it is completely out of your range. The beauty of it, is there are plenty of other drivers who may do it. I am starting to become more selective with my over all time it will take to make the delivery. It is tough to make that call in 30 seconds, while already driving.

ive said this before but in more detail they dont give u a tip option based on nearest driver, what they need to do is like uber show a few drivers nearby that are so close to the restaurant, and you can look at the drivers rating and how close they are, lets say theres 3 drivers near the restaurant the cutomer can look at all 3s rating and a few other things, and choose, the higher rated driver farther away or the lower rated driver closer or visa versa, then send them a tip bid, it doesnt have to necesarily show the tip, but it can show the full payout vs the mileage like it does now, on the driver end, unless they choose to still hide part of it, but on the customers end it will say these 3 drivers are this far away this is there ratings when u hover over the driver it will say he has to drive this far to go to the restaraunt then to you...give an estimate of mileage then give a base minum tip example to the customer for that and they can choose that or increase it, maybe even have it say, that if you tip this much hes getting this much per mile and have a sliding scale, regardless the customer needs to see upfront where these dashers are before ordering and tipping

Seems to me that just like some some restaurants have a minimum dollar order before their in house delivery drivers take to the streets, it might help us gig delivery drivers if delivery apps stop accepting such small orders. And we as delivery drivers would not need to cherry pick as much because ultimately we also have a bottom line that must be met. Otherwise its like we drive and deliver for charity.

The way the platform is designed is what causes this. If you walked into a restaurant as a server, and above everyone’s head was a dollar amount for how much you would make to wait on them, everyone would try and get the high paying tables. I’ve recently started doing grocery delivery with Shipt, where even if the customer pre tips, the driver doesn’t know it. And if they post tip, it can be weeks later. It takes a real leap of faith to do those as it is a lot more work to grocery shop, check out and pay, load groceries in car, deliver, and then unload. I’m glad most people tip with Shipt. But many who use DD don’t tip. (Many do). I’m treading lightly as I’m the kind of person who tips anyone that comes into my home.

How do you feel about 1.00 per mile?? I’ve been working on a video discussing profit, revenue, and time. I was surprised to learn that I could pretty much take any order, even at .50 a mile, and it didn’t impact profit as much as I thought. And while it did impact the amount of time I worked, my hourly rate was just slightly lower.
