On Saturday May 25th, Doors Open Toronto officially kicked off for the weekend. Our first stop for the day was KITE (KITE is an acronym for Knowledge, Innovation, Talent, Everywhere).
From their website:
The KITE Research Institute at UHN is a world leader in complex rehabilitation science and is dedicated to improving the lives of people living with the effects of disability, illness and aging. KITE's areas of focus include injury prevention, restoration of function, independent living and community integration.
KITE is the research arm of the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute. KITE is home to 127 scientists, 187 scientific trainees and 56,000-square feet of research space spread across five sites in Toronto.
Our researchers are actively engaged in developing new treatments, devices and products as well as gathering evidence that guides changes to policy and public opinion. KITE is one of the principal research enterprises at the University Health Network (UHN), Canada's top medical research hospital with more than 1,194 principal investigators and $539-million in total annual research expenditures (2023).
About Doors Open and KITE:
Visitors will have the opportunity to tour KITE's vast underground facility, which is home to five simulation laboratories: DriverLab, WinterLab, StreetLab, RampLab and StairLab.
Each of these labs is uniquely designed to test how people interact with day-to-day environmental challenges, from navigating city streets on foot to stepping out of the bathtub. Four labs are mobile and share a motion simulator with six degrees of freedom that recreates different real-world environments.
This tour is self-guided, but all five labs will be open to the public and KITE's research teams will be on-site to answer questions and share research success stories.
