This was so important! I recently retired from being a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. And furniture art is my mental health! The stress of 42 years in the hospital with critically ill and life and death scenarios left me feeling like I had PTSD. I feel happy with my crafty endeavors. Thank for for sharing your life journey. And your beautiful talents. I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your beloved pup. It is exquisitely painful as I know…I lost my lovely trail horse Josie this past spring. She was my partner and we trusted each other for our lives. She was my backyard buddy. So I get where you are. My our Lord fill you with His peace. Bless you and Martyn and your entire family. And your lampshades are maybe even more fabulous than your furniture, if possible! 😍😘

Hi, greetings from NJ USA. I just found your channel and had to subscribe. You & Martin are so funny together, delightful. I love your crafting. As a new retiree, and living alone I need to keep busy with fun stuff. I just started to furniture paint and I love your lampshades. Also my heartfelt condolences on your dogs passing❤. I too just had to put my beautiful black lab Duke down on December 27th. He was my best buddy for 15 yrs.,heart and soul. I'm heartbroken. So this video I just came upon was at the perfect time, with the perfect message. God & my angels know how to send the right messages when needed. Thank you. Blessings 🙏 🙏🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤😊😊😊🎨🎨🎨🎨🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Thank you for sharing. Now I better understand why I enjoy watching your videos so much. I lost my beloved husband three years ago, and listening to the banter between you and Martyn brings back such fond memories of my happy marriage. As for losing Rocco, I send you all the sympathy you can hold. I lost a 21-year-old furbaby three months ago and I have a blind 19-year-old Pekingese-Pomeranian that I watch her breathing while she's asleep to be certain that she is not gone. Animals are such precious members of our families, and people who don't understand that are the losers. Thank you for the encouragement to make ourselves feel better without guilt.

Hello Lel. Good morning from Cumberland, Maryland. I just want to say that I am so very sorry for the loss you're feeling over your pup. Yes, the Lord knows losing a fur baby is very hard. I was a nursing assistant and retired as an Activities Director Assistant from a local nursing home. I did a lot of personal care assistant also. It's a tough job, but it's the most rewarding job I ever did also. We all need a way of releasing our inner emotions. I loved listening to your journey through life. You are so reassuring and caring. Thank you for being you.❤

I started watching this as I was baking a Honey Cake. It is the Jewish New Year and the cake was my mom’s specialty… she died last year and so while I am not a baker ( I love eating cake and it’s definitely dopamine for me) i was smiling as you discussed your cake eating habit. Then the lamp shades…I have a thing for lamps and lamp shades…I’m not sure why so many people are happy with white/cream/lamp shades when there is so much color to be had. Then you had me at the birds and flowers and I could go on. Thank you so much for being vulnerable with us. I watched to the very end to see a dark haired Lel and her delicious Rocco. So sorry for your loss. I am going to start a lamp shade project later today. After wiping away a few tears after seeing you and Rocco, I went to check on my honey cake. Only to discover I forgot to put the honey int he cake so who knows what kind of cake I’ve created - I will probably eat it anyway. Virtual hugs to you❤❤

Your comment made me cry, it was beautiful. However I think both marty and I are dying to know how did the cake taste. As far as I'm concerned cake is cake in any form I would have scoffed it. Much love Lel x

When we lose a family member, our heart gets a little hole in it. Sometimes the holes seem small sometimes they seem large, but there non the less. I'm so sorry for you very losses, moving on through creating helps a lot, even when you're stuck or unmotivated just picking up something to create helps. Dopamine and all it's benefits at work. Each week I look forward to watching you and Martyn and this week we got the added bonus of a family share, so thank you. It was quite nice to get a small glimpse of life in Scotland. And thanks for showing us a project that many of us would be intimidated by trying, the shades are wonderful and fun!! Hugs until next week!

I’m so sorry for your loss, I’ve been going through the same thing. My 2 year old pitbull died in a tragic way at the end of august… she was so amazing and was helpful for my emotional well being. I had been struggling a lot over it, and I will be honest; watching your channel HAS HELPED me. So, thank you. And the funny thing is, I have a lampshade that’s similar to that, that I had no idea what to do with it… that problem is now solved! 🙏 Thank you Lel, and Martyn…. You’re both blessings and I thank you for your content. I want you to know that having such wonderful people as you two, working together and creating such beauty and putting it out into the world; it is most appreciated. Thank you. I hope you’re able to hold onto the memories you have with your fur baby and use it in combination with your passion for art, and can somehow find a way for your hearts to be healed… sometimes it helps to know that YOU DO truly help others through all your hard work. Now I’ve gotta just get out of my own discomfort and depression so I can complete my lampshade project. ❤

Gaudy and Gorgeous! A delightful change of pace. So interesting to see how you tackle other projects. Your lampshades are such fun and yes, uplifting. Reading through many of the comments, everyone writes such loving messages. Hopefully, reading those heartfelt words uplifts you when you need more 'dopamine' to get you through. Making art, painting furniture, is where I find comfort. I'm an avid news hog and get bogged down and depressed by what is happening politically in the U.S. Feeling helpless and often hopeless, putting on music and creating helps me cope. Thank you for sharing more of your life with us, it is so nice knowing more about the artist all of us admire. It is the end of a good and productive day for me, and although I watched your video first thing this morning, I was in a hurry to make some art before I wrote back. With love always, Sydni

I LOVED this video! It was honest and raw, thank you so much for sharing your story. I am 52 and have always been a career driven woman, who enjoyed crafting on the weekends (it was my creative release - my dopamine hit!). Unfortunately, I was in a car accident a few years ago, that completely changed my life. The career I had built for 30 years ended abruptly, and I had to find a new version of myself. I decided to go back to my creative roots as a form of therapy. During the past 3 years, I have learned so many new skills.. from digital design to polymer clay, mug painting and pottery, to revamping furniture and so many more side quests haha! Every day I look forward to doing something creative, and on the days that I feel too down, or in pain, I watch KZbin videos (like yours). Being creative has been my lifeline at times, and seeing other creatives talk about the benefits of creating "just for the love of it", is not only inspiring, but it also makes me feel like I am not alone. Please keep up this type of content, we all need to hear these positive messages 💖🌟

This is the same about mental health here in the USA,as well!! No one wants to speak about mental health, and it's so sad. My children, are adults now with families of their own,but my husband and I and our children have always had open honest communications with each other, and it does not matter the topic we talk, and get to the bottom of problems and help each other. But it's so sad so many don't have anyone to lean on,or someone to talk with. Biggest Hugs and sorry for the loss of your fur baby,he sure was a beautiful boy, Hugs and prayers from the USA here in Indiana,,Candy Hoard

Hi Candy your right, good mental health is slightly easier when you have a close family. However I get lots of messages from those on there own. So I just wanted to get them kinda started on a project. Your message was very kind... I think all countries don't discuss how we all feel, I guess it makes us vulnerable x x

Even from this one I noticed that when I was coming home from purchasing the Annie Sloan paint I felt pretty happy with myself. Lost my German Shepherd 5 years ago. We'd just moved to New Jersey from California and we were lucky to be able to buy a few acres... well with acreage come ticks. Ugh...! Every day we were pulling ticks off of them. I had 3 GS's at the time and I was worried about tick born diseases. So I promptly got them into the vet and asked about the Lymes Vaccine. Two of them had two different tick born diseases already (we'd been here all of 8 weeks). All three of my fur babies received 1 of 2 shots and 2 weeks later I brought them all back in for the 2nd shot. My sweet Chellie yelped when hers was administered, it was a Friday morning. A few hours later I walked down our driveway to grab the trash can and Chellie, who usually accompanied me all the way down (1/4 mile), stayed and waited for me at the bend. Something was wrong. I called the vet, he said "normal". By Sunday we were at the emergency vet hospital with her where we learned that she had a reaction to the vaccine and now her white blood cells were attacking her red blood cells as her body thought those cells were a disease (or it could be red attacking the white, I can't say for sure)... We were told we could try to save her, it would take many blood transfusions over months to a year, would cost near $10,000.00 or more, with no guarantee she'd make it. I just couldn't bring myself to put her through that. I had to let her go. I was devastated and still have tears when I type this. I caused her death trying to prevent disease! I loved her soooooo much. She was a rescue as all my dogs have been and she was MY girl. She literally was with me always and laid on the couch net me every night. Thankfully, I have two more sweeties still here with me, Rudy who is crippled in his hind legs (some weird disease and probably why he ended up in rescue) and Nina, who was found on the side of the road. Her initial vet visit exposed 7 broken teeth, anemia due to fleas (literally bathed her and blood was washing off of her skin), ear infections, and a broken pelvis trying to heal itself. My vet guesstimated her to be all of 10 months old at the time. Pets are so wonderful even when they run you through the emotional tackle zone. We are so blessed to have them if only for a short time. Hang in there sweetie, you are in my prayers. Hugs from Jersey. xoxo.

I love your honesty and your creativity. I don't suffer with mental health problems myself , I'm very lucky but my mother did all her life and my daughter has since she was a young teen. Can you imagine my mother was born in 1930 and is no longer with us, but had a wonderful relationship with her mother who took her to see a doctor ( i hate to think what he said), she had trouble going to school with her mental health, she stayed at home and helped her mum, but I can't help thinking that she would have been put away had she had a different mother. My daughter still needs help reassurance from me and I'm happy to be there for her and my twin grandchildren, she is wonderful mother and some of that is due to how deeply she thinks and feels about things even small things. Thank you for being open it matters.

I feel your pain. It always hurts to lose one of our furbabies. I quite literally have a 5 day-old puppy dying. Her other two are perfect, but apparently, his heart is failing. The ultrasound tech had pointed out that the heart rate was erratic for one of the babies. It has been expressed in this one sweet boy. I've been bottle feeding, but he quit suckling, then quit eating. Nature sucks. My heart is breaking. Especially for mama, who knows and barely leaves him. Seeing your video has made my day easier. And here I'm hesitant to even PAINT a SMALL lamp shade! LOL Marley....I think this is a wonderfully freeing-up-your-inhibitions video. At least for me it is. It's interesting what first attracted me to this video.....dopamine....I'm a Psych RN, retired, but I LOVE psych...or behavioral health, for those who are uncomfortable with "psych". I'm so glad you shared your earlier career studies because it appropriately explains your insight. There are so many parts of your video that I would like to comment on but suffice it to say that not only is it technique learning, it's learning how to be okay with your feelings, regardless of what they are and that it's okay to step out of your comfort zone and maybe surprise yourself at what you are capable of doing. I will also add that I'm SO glad you pointed out the white edges....I kept thinking, but Marley I don't like those white edges....HA! You are so refreshing to the soul. (I thought I was subscribed but I wasn't...but I am now🤪) I'm so sorry about Rocco. I totally get your heartache. OMG, I had to come back and edit....I LOVE that blue and gold lampshade with the Kindest Regards script stamping. I would be perfectly happy with only that....maybe a bit of trim but that one is very pleasing to me. Thank you for showing it!
