I shamelessly LOVE the exact moment things escalate; you're just there, following the commander and waving the flag around, maybe being a bit silly since dodging the artillery is easy.... then, out of nowhere, BOOM. A blast, screen goes red and balck, you have just the time to see the commander's shape torn by the explosion, no more sunny day on clear fields; smoking craters beneath an overcast sky, as you charge over the mutilated corpses of the fallen, other soldiers dying around you in droves. It just got REAL, and there is NO going back.

For someone with a military career - very devastating, especially back then. Basically conveying a message that he's a joke and not even worthy of an honorable death fighting the enemy.
