Doria Hughes & Georgia McGovern on Rosemarie Beck | New York Studio School

The Rosemarie Beck Foundation’s Archivist and Storyteller, Doria Hughes (Beck’s granddaughter) and RBF artist-in-residence Georgia McGovern (NYSS ’19) read from several of Beck’s recently-discovered and never published writings, as well as early versions of two essays which can be found in “Rosemarie Beck: Letters to a Young Painter and Other Writings”, edited by Eric Sutphin (2018). Presented in her own words and her own artworks, Hughes and McGovern recreate the ambiance of one of Rosemarie Beck’s unique and historic lecture-slide shows. Rosemarie Beck (1923-2003) was an American painter and educator. She graduated in 1944 from Oberlin College with a bachelor's degree in art history and later studied at Columbia University, the Art Students League and the Institute of Fine Arts at NYU. Early in her career, Beck was a member of the New York School of abstract expressionist but by the late 1950s, she had switched to a figurative painting style. Beck taught at Queens College, Vassar College, Middlebury College, the Vermont Studio Center, and the New York Studio School.
