Good to see a video from you again. It would be interesting to break down the Aloris to see how it works and where the wear is. Might even make a good video.

My new TL2 came with a SDN35CXA from Dorian. I've spent my whole career working with multifix style toolposts, and cheesy piston actuated qctp's. The Dorian is absolutely on a whole other level.

I've got a very similar lathe at work a 1958 monarch I still use it it's a 20" model with a 32 inch actual swing 72inch between centers recently made a 5ft 7 inch stroke crank shaft largest diameter was 15.5 inch. These old machines were built great

I have not used a Dorian tool post but they are my go to brand for toolholders because they will hold larger tooling than the Aloris in the same size.
@AlwaysSunnyintheShop
@AlwaysSunnyintheShop 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah they hold bigger tools and are built heavier, too. On your big Monarch those would be 20 lbs a piece with no tool in them.

No shifting spanner was a blessing....with tool wear Adam the repeatability of 2 tenths is not worth looking for...Also depends on what end of the lathe you are working at. the unworn tailstock or the worn chuck end...!!

Pretty new tool post for the prettiest lathe on KZbin! Awesome upgrade, Aaron. It's almost too bad you have to move the tool post around so much, so you can't take full advantage of that stellar repeatability by building a tool library in your DRO. But I suppose it's a small price to pay for the utility of such a large lathe... Plus you've still all the advantages that come with the quick-change-ability, repeatable tool heights, and the added rigidity of a brand new, super-high-quality tool post. Looking forward to seeing some chips made using the new investment!

It's hard to ask this without inadvertently coming off butthurt, I assure you it's not the case. A few videos back I asked if you could make use of an NOS KDK tool post. I'm not remotely put out that you chose otherwise, but I'm always interested in this question. It seems like all Machinists are rather fixed on their tool post style. It's one of the only changes I've seen countenanced for a new employee. It seems like everybody either prefers the aloris style, the multifix, or what I suppose would be best summed up as other; the rarer options and the occasional old-timer who loves his lantern post. I'm always curious what creates this preference. May I ask if you learned on this style of tool post? Have you run other styles for significant amount of time? What do you like and dislike about the various options? BTW, I congratulate you on not removing your cross slide, I see the advantages it has for some operators, people with far more skill than myself, but it feels like denuding a piece of art and it completely ignores the wonderful 30 60 90 trigonometry rule that gives you 10x resolution on the cross slide dial. And who could not love that color? I have a set of Studebaker trim logo pieces of that exact art deco / art nouveau era. I'm not even a car guy, but the beauty and workmanship in those simple fonts... It's the little things. That machine looks like an absolute pleasure every time you turn on the light. Be well

A number of those toolpost companies have gone out of business as their holders offered no real advantage, and had other problems. Yet, there will always be a small few who still swear by them. I find no need to bother.

The pins go into the nut and then into the bottom of the toolpost holder to keep it from spinning, not through the nut and into the compound.

This is only my opinion although the wedge type QCTP can claim to have some advantages in strength. Unlike Dickson, Multifix and the Aloris piston tool posts which clamp by aplying a force perpendicular to the mating face. the wedge type uses a force in plane with the mating face as the wedge is forced down which can cause the tool holder to twist unpredictably.

Your first problem is your using Instagram. The people calling your lathe small are not machinist and or know anything about monarch lathes. If youtube isn't paying you enough. You should pump out more content and build your channel like you used to. 1 video every 4 months or so will not make you money.
@theessexhunter1305

There is machining for the purpose of making films which Arron enjoys, but struggles as it is not his trade. Or what Adam has done is go overboard with promoting products. Real world is Kurtis or Peter from Edge precision or Josh Topper if you want real engineer's who film what that they make not cleaning down the machine every 2 mins or not running coolant so you can see the work
