The way the title is worded, I figured you were laying out and then cutting the joint into already-round wood (ie 'round stock'). I was interested to see houw you would manage that, but I'm not disappointed with what you ended up doing instead. Great work man, keep it up :)

Thanks! To do it in round stock you would need to snap a center line and mark from that.
@Trippy518
@Trippy518 4 жыл бұрын
@@DorianBracht Actually its better to draw a reference line around the stock to set the start point of 45 deg angle. getting the angles on same reference is critical. Once you cut one of the angles you can cut the first face of tenon to that angle. That will give you a flat to reference your next angle to. Cutting the tenon after that is pretty straight forward. Getting the mortise in line in round stock is a huge challenge. I have done one it was not quite as pretty as yours but it did function for all intensive purposes.

Should one use wood glue when joining..or is the pressure fitting enough to keep together
@maxdecphoenix
@maxdecphoenix 3 жыл бұрын
glue doesn't hurt. Most modern glues have stronger cohesion than the woodgrains they're gluing together. historical techniques for fastening joinery are wedged tenons where a wedge is beat into the tenon to press it against the mortice walls in a friction fit, and 'pinning' where a hole is bored through the mortice and tenon and a wooden dowel or 'pin' (like a nail) is inserted to fasten the joint mechanically.

Viele Grüße Martin Hello Dorian, always a pleasure to watch you working which such a precision. I am fascinated how you handle a Ryoba, which is actually quite rough. Super! May I ask you where you learned to work the japanese way (e.g. coloring areas and then planing them)? My second question: Which brand are your saws? Kind Regards Martin

Yes, but you have to mark out from a center line.

beautiful joinery done with great patience and skill, but that's not a m&t in round stock, it's a m&t in square stock made round and scribed.

Isn't it funny: we take round trees, spend a great deal of time and energy making them square, then turn around and round them again. It feels like there's a wasted step or two in there. (There's NOT, mind you, but damned if it don't _feel_ that way sometimes)

I had the same thought, then I realized he wasn't going to turn the pieces round but cut them round by hand. Definitely no reason to make things harder!

Great work as ever but let's be honest here-that's a mitred through M+T in SQUARE STOCK that is then rounded afterwards. Still great work though,dude :-)

It's amazing that after all of that meticulous beautiful handcrafting that it amounts to nothing but a pretty piece of work it serves no purpose is an exercise in wasted effort. Put your talent to work building something that really matters instead of just showing off that you can do it

Quincy, note in the description Dorian writes, "In this series I explore different wood joinery techniques." The whole purpose of "this series" is to look in detail at various joints. In this way he can explore many more joints than he would be able to if he was committed to building an entire furniture piece every time. Note also that Dorian has many other videos were he DOES build entire pieces.
