Emotions are bubbling up like fiery witch cauldrons at the moment, and if we don’t turn down the heat on our emotional saucepans, we run the risk of scolding loved ones, work colleagues or innocent customer service representatives 😛
When releasing our pent up emotions, what could be more fun than Dancing Like No One is Watching!? 💃
Dancing is recognized by psychologists as somatic therapy - therapy that releases stress and anxiety from the body and helps regulate our emotions. 😭 😂😩🤣
I started doing dance classes again when I stopped drinking alcohol in my 30s and I realized that what I missed most was breaking out the lawn mower on the night club dance floor. 🕺
Choreography dance has it's own benefits, but the kind of dance that feels most therapeutic for me is called various names including: Journey dance, 5 rhythms, Ecstatic and Freeform dance...
I call it “Dorky Living Room Dancing” because it’s the kind of dancing I used to do in the living room when I was a kid! 🤸🏾‍♀️
This form of dance provides the benefits of:
* running (runners high & cardio - good for the heart!)
* yoga (somatic therapy, stress & anxiety relief)
* dance (cognitive & motor skills, hand-eye coordination & fun!)
* meditation (mindfulness & calming the nervous system)
...all at the same time! 👏
So I thought I’d share 4 easy Steps for anyone wanting to burn off some steam in the most fun way possible during this weird, challenging period of our lives... 🎶
1) Dance with your emotions
2) Observe self criticism and judgement with mindfulness & release inhibitions
3) Focus on letting different parts of the body lead the movement
4) Get lost in the music & out of your head - don’t try to do good moves, do silly moves, let the music guide you!
So dust off your 80s bandana and get your Flashdance moves ready because it’s time to truly let go and dance like no one is watching!
