When I lived in Russia as a teacher in the 1990's, most of the apartments that I visited were quite comfortable but the common areas [halls, stairs, elevators, front yard] were in disrepair. At that time, nobody owned their apartments so they only cared about their personal space and all the rest was just not their concern. With little money for maintenance, nothing was done to fix things up. I am afraid that this mentality still exists among many people. My personal opinion is that things could be much better if the central government spent less on the military and more on the needs of the average person.

@@boblacks945 Reminds me of strata-titled shopping malls in my country, where different shops are owned by different landlords. With them being naturally self-interested it's less likely that they can come to an agreement to pay for larger-scale projects e.g. renovation, collective sale, so such malls tend to be more run-down. They're also less likely to co-ordinate among one another to have an optimal tenant mix in the mall, so some of such malls are red-light in nature e.g. higher concentration of bars & discos, massage parlours (which have been associated sometimes with more sexual activities)

This kind of dormitory in Canada would revolt people, it would be seen on the evening news and would be seen as completely unacceptable. I guess it is because she doesn't know anything else... anything better. She thinks that these conditions are actually normal. Of course, for people from wealthier countries, it is not normal at all. To me, the dorm looks terrible and depressive. In my country, students would protest and complain and require either lowering their payments for the dorm rooms, or (and that is more probable) repairing everything that doesn't work. Actually, no. I'm wrong. In my country, such a dormitory would not get a permission to accommodate anyone. It would get closed for not keeping legislative requirements for living in them.

@@elbereth2259 I live in ukraine and it's basically the same conditions, but the elevators usually dont work, theres no hot water and the fridges are brought by the students themselves. Actually everything in the room except for the beds have been brought by students, sometimes previous residents. In some universities they even make the students install new windows. It happened in Kherson and the cost of rent was actually 400uah=50$ back then, it was in 2012. But it depends, previous residents could've already installed new window. In other city Kharkiv for example one of the unis installed new windows to all dorms and they have hot water, but the others keep the students living in a barn. Depends on the uni itself. The price, the accommodations, utilities etc. I never lived in dorms and was shocked to see how my boyfriend lived. He even had a handmade wardrobe probably left by the previous student. @timmy7201

@@Shevk-yu I'm someone who needs moment's of solitude, I would go mentally insane if I had to share my room with others. I would probably prefer to live inside a box, under a bridge. The student dorm where I rented my room had around ~45 students, mostly males. While I liked living there, I often wouldn't unlock my door before noon on class-free days. Once the door got unlocked madness began. On the days I had classes before noon I would wake up early, just to have some time for a quiet and calm breakfast on my own in our dorms kitchen. Two hours later when others started to wake up I would often go for a run before class. *PS: As reference with what I ment with madness, here are some examples:* 1) On occasion some police officers would show up, sometimes early in the morning when some other student(s) did stupid things being drunk at a party the previous night. Those officers often required 30 to 60 minutes to get those drunk students to wake up and exit their room. Up to three times I had to share my breakfast table with two cops, offering them some coffee and a piece of my omelet. One time they returned some really drunk dudes pants, with wallet and phone still inside the pockets (please, don't ask me how he got back to his room without pants). The second time they returned a drunk student that felt asleep in the city's park during winter and wanted to make sure he was alright after heating up under his blankets. The third time someones gf called the cops to ask if they could check up on her bf, because he hadn't answered her calls for 24 hours and she didn't own a car to go check herself, that dude got so drunk that he still felt sick 48 hours later. 2) Two other mornings I entered a kitchen without tables or chairs and opened windows, apparently drunk students think it's funny to push out furniture trough a second story window... 3) One other night some drunk student wanted to grap his fried chicken bare handed out of the cooking oil, as the only sober person with a drivers license I had to drive the idiot towards hospital at 3 am. 4) Another day some student took some mind altering substance and ran outside in the middle of the day, naked.I had to babysit this dude until whatever he took wore off. 5) At my last year there some drunk stranger that didn't live at our dorm fainted while he was taking a dump on our toilet. Somehow he got poop everywhere on the walls. I put on some gloves to reach for his phone and called his parents in the morning, his mom came over to clean her son's 21 year old butt-cheeks and our toilet before taking him back home.

@@rikitikitoki Like I said before: I would rather go live inside a box under a bridge, than share a bed-room with strangers... Here in Western Europe the student dorm rent is around 1/3th compared to the rent for a normal (100m² / 1076f²) three bedroom apartment. Isn't sharing an apartment with some (civilized) friends a possible alternative there in Eastern Europe? Just include an additional 15-20% monthly costs for internet, insurance, electricity, water & gas on top of the rental price. I'm currently employed by an university and I still co-house with a friend to share the rental price. We have each our own bedroom and currently share the third room as a Covid-work-from-home office. Searching an apartment in a town nearby the city is often cheaper here compared to alternatives inside the city.

Hehe. As she said, she kind of lucky to live in that dorm. I studied at the same university and lived in a dorm across the road, we lived in a twice bigger room but as four people. Though often some friends were hanging out in our room and staying for a whole night, in that sense it felt like we lived as 5-6 people quite often. And we were also unlucky to have only 2 showers (one for 3 and another for 6 persons at a time) for the whole building (5 floors). On the bright side, some people make lifetime friends living in a room together or at least good acquaintances, though it depends on a person of course.

Man, seeing this makes me feel so lucky. I've been kinda taking my situation for granted, but just imagining hopping over one border towards the east, the situation is this. I study music in Helsinki, and I'm living in the centre of Helsinki in a shared 60m^2, 3-room + kitchen apartment with one flatmate (yes, we even have a common space!). Of course the rent is quite hefty, 1250€/month combined + 20€/mo for water each (so weird to think that I pay almost double per month just for water than what you do for living), but working on the side + the amount of support our government gives students makes it very doable. There's no real dormitory culture in Finland, as a lot of students just opt for renting a place off of the private markets, but of course there are loads of apartment complexes dedicated for student housing. Most of them will almost always offer you your own room + a shared kitchen and toilet etc (but still all in the same apartment flat). The rent for such a room in a say 3-person flat is probably somewhere around 300€/month, in Helsinki at least.

These living circumstances may seem rather 'basic', but it does tend to make the (young) people having to deal with it more creative. A rich student with a jacuzzi in his or her dormitory doesn't make his or her a better student, or a more interesting person. In fact, spoiled youngsters are usually just annoying.
@xiaoshua
@xiaoshua 3 жыл бұрын
Well, i'm not going to say that we need a jacuzzi to be better students, but actually sometimes is hard, just imagine you study all day in the university, after university you have to work to pay for your study and your room, and after this long day you just come to this "home" which is horrible too... It's okay at first, but at some point of your university life it's all makes you kinda depressed
