Had the chance to go to Scalaria a few years back and, met up with famed aviator Iren Dornier. Scalaria is a mind blowing experience itself, but getting to go for a flight with Iren in the Do-24 he redesigned and rebuilt, was extra special indeed. Doing a flight demonstration for the Scalaria crowd, Iren went all out and gave them one heck of a show. It was quite an awesome experience. Check it out.
And thanks to SCALARIA for the external camera shots of the flight!

This is the Dornier Do-24 ATT, it´s an amphibian conversion of a 1944 fuselage added with a modern wing and turboprops, which was made by the Dornier company 1980s. Iren Dornier as a private man bought the plane some years later and restored it. There is a great book of his journey, "Logbuch der Träume". But thanks for this amazing inside video 🙂👍

@Dalle Smalhals it was used as "Amphibischer Technologieträger" or amphibious technology carrier by the Dornier company the only completely original part is the fuselage and tail section. The retractable landing gear was taken from the Do 31 Jet VTOL transporter

I love flying boats, too. They have a slightly inferior payload and higher running costs, but are they ever beautiful, and to run missions to places with no airfield you have to have one of those

Just an awesome day for you Kermit! Beautiful country by the Wolfgangsee. And what an Amphibian it is. I managed to find a little video of the retractable landing gear going up. Great, great design. Just reading up on the original specifications by the Royal Netherlands Navy: it also could handle extremely rough open seas. So I could see why Iren was able to do the 'bounces' on a flat lake, especially after it's rebuild. I took lots of screenshots and saved them to my 'Planes file'. Watched the video 3 times. Thank you so much. And good on you for arranging his induction into the Living Legends group. And I LMHO when your editor slipped in his empty glass and sad face 🤣 . What a great memory you captured, priceless. Thanks, again.

My favourite plane of all times! I even got a chance to take a peek inside, when it was on exhibition atr the Do Days in my (and Dorniers) home town of Friedrichshafen a couple of years ago! I also know some guys who already flew with it. Dornier flying boats, especially the Do 24, are known for having the best on water performance of all flying boats. During the first sea trials they managed to take off in waves up to 11m high!

That Do-24 in the water is really a piece of art at any angle, just wonder whether the Do-X's cockpit's resemblance to a ship's bridge is reflected actually in the inside, possibly with a telegraph tube to the engineer's station....

Another entertaining and informative video! Iren flying his Opa's Flugboot! Das kann Ich kaum glauben! I have always felt there is ageless romance to a Flying Boat. Herr Dornier's seems quite a bit more nimble than Her ancestors. How about some "pilot stuff"? Take-off speed, stall speed, engine rpm at take-off? Glide radius and loaded weights, maybe? Why, Mr. Wizard, did you not bring Iren a jug or two of your magnificent Rum? Perhaps there is no orange juice in Austria.

I love seaplanes though never flown in one and KW really loves them too. Love the whole pioneering seaplanes genre, Supermarine, Italian fleets but Dorniers do it for me. Lucky to have been in and smelled the sea in Sunderland statics. Seems sacrilege to modify a 24, but at 60 I think I like them more than my whole 51 year warbird love affair !

Thanks for the video. Because of your succient descripton to Iren of what you want Act 3 to accomplish, I gained a little more insight into why you are pushing a dream into reality. I've known, know, and/or met, including a brief chat with you, people who are quite literally Forces of Nature. I am not one myself, but am grateful that your kind exists. I am certain that great monetary reward is not the intent in developing Act 3, but is intended to put people on a higher plane. This will enable them to acheive dreams/goals - or perhaps, engage in pursuits that they had never even thought existed within them. You are probably too modest to think that this is a humanitarian effort, but Act 3 will do more good for society than even you might imagine.

A couple of Dutch naval officers did draw up the specifications for a replacement for the Dornier 'Wal' (in service with the Royal Netherlands Navy in the Dutch East Indies). Then Dornier designed the Do-24, especially for the Dutch Navy. At first the Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine showed no interest in this design. That changed when Nazi-Germany occupied the Netherlands in 1940. They captured the intact production line of the Do-24 near Dordrecht, where the Dutch were constructing this type under license. The Germans ordered to proceed with the construction of Do-24 seaplanes for themselves. The rest is history...
