American Masters -- Dorothea Lange: Grab a Hunk of Lightning” premiering Friday, August 29, 2014 9-11 p.m. on PBS

Dorothea Lange is perhaps one of the most important historical figures in American Photography. She started as a portrait photographer in San Francisco. This early work shaped her as an artist, but she quickly got tired of it. In about 1929, at the crash of the stock market, Lange became involved with social documentary types of photography which defined her career.
In this video we'll concentrate on 2 periods of her life: the migrant photos she did while working for the Resettlement Administration and later the Japanese Internment images she made while working for the War Relocation Authority.

Ted, Keep up the good work. This is some of the most educational art history content available on KZbin. Good luck getting to 100k subscribers. You can do it! Suggestion: I don't think its necessary for you to explain and justify the use of Pinterest every time you flip to the computer. -mike

Thanks for the video. Can't help but wonder how well her work would be received, today, if you removed the historical context though. It is extremely interesting to look at old photograph but, honestly, I haven't seen so much cut feet and hands in a long time, one of the seven deadly sin of photography. But hey, what do I know, I'm just a hack.

The portrait of the woman whose arms form two triangles (8:41) reminds me of a lot of the fashion photography that is created nowadays. The context is radically different but if you take that away there is a lot that is in common.

Looking at this American photography work... Slowly realizing that I have never seen a good historical or social portrait from my own country. I'd imagine there would be some important work here too. Guess I'll have to research it some day.

I had a really eloquent response on the media impressions or rather the lack of media impressions proper female artists receive but I fumbled and skipped the page so instead I'll suggest you check out Hannah Modigh, JH Engström, Christer Strömholm and your local used bookstores art section, as local no name portraiture and to a even greater extent political portraiture and reportage goes mostly unnoticed unless you have a really photo-zealous book dealer.
