Dorothy Donegan--Tea For Two, 1993 Telethon

Dorothy Donegan stops the show with her expanded version of "Tea For Two" on this 1993 Cerebral Palsy telethon, followed by one of her hot boogies. Even in this late stage of her career, she was still one of the greatest jazz pianists in the world. Introducing her are Joe Williams and Hal Linden.

Hal Linden is wrong D.D. was born in 1922 and was not 85 when this was filmed. Regardless what an awesome pianist as good if not better than O.P.

I, you, have had a stunning and unique performance from a lady so hidden by negative cultural history, undoubtedly racism, snobbery, mysogyny, aesthetic ignorance. Dorothy is and was a marvel, an eternally fine artist, a crowd pleaser, a carrier of tradition as she made Fats W and Art T live again. At an age when one thinks of the walking stick, wheel chair, even sedation, this dynamic great artist gave us a priceless performance. Bravo, and surely Bach, Lizst, Chopin, Gershwin, all jazz greats, would just shout and cheer...

She could play unbelievably fine piano. Too often, she does not, she's often led to banging and glissandos that leave this listener cold. Now, when she plays like she did with a fairly famous, well produced Cab Calloway team up, in her much younger days, she's scary good. So don't get it twisted, I see the talent. Maybe something happened to her along the way, often the case with the truly gifted, they can be fragile as well.

@@philpryor7524 I saw Dorothy play live at a small jazz club in LA, in the late seventies,, the Parisian Room, which is no longer there. So I have been. obviously, quite aware of her and seen her in different settings, and she's really very well equipped, but musical skill is not like riding a bike, you can lose it if you don't stay very on top of it. Also substance abuse can be a big part of any such formula. When she's at the top of her game, or was, there's nobody better, at least as far as women who play jazz seriously.
