Just watching the first few minutes, the wedding set a la Helen, Duchess of Denver, rather than the Oxford wedding written by Sayers, makes me so sad. And to think that Hollywood would not release the rights for the Petherbridge/Walter series ... I could just cry.

The BBC has the Petherbridge/Walter rights. I thought it would be PBS but it seems BBC.

How Harriet ACTUALLY feels about Peter giving up detecting: "What kind of life could we have if I knew that you had become less than yourself by marrying me?"

I agree, these are so not Peter and Harriet! An American piffler? I don't think so! Petherbridge and Walter are the best BEST ever! ♥ I personally miss the Latin at the end of Gaudy Night, but you can't have everything. And giving up crime indeed! On the contrary, at this point in the books he has finally come to terms with crime-solving as being his profession and got over most of his moral qualms about it. "...that he might not hear eight o'clock strike." My heart breaks!

Robert Montgomery seems to be a very suitable Lord Peter in this excerpt. Thank you for uploading it! I love the names of the characters in this story. Aggie Twitterton has to be one of the best names ever invented!

@Jessycar1BrumBeep No, unfortunately they didn't. But Petherbirdge performed in Busman's Honeymoon (the original play, not an adaptaion of the novel) on stage opposite his real-life wife, Emily Richards. Too bad we can't see it.

Why just post this teaser of the movie and not the rest? But also. Judging by the opening of this movie it seems to be a pretty shoddy Hollywoodised version of Dorothy L Sayers Busman’s Honeymoon novel, even if the emotion is in the right place. It remains one of my favourite novels as it is witty, has emotional depth and is a great reflection of the social spectrum of pre WW2 British society, as well as being a great ‘who dunnit’.

I find myself very upset. This does not do justice to the wonderful Lord Peter Wimsey stories of Dorothy L. Sayers. Peter would never give up detecting nor would Harriet give up her writing. Neither of them would have allowed it. Also, Tallboys was not where Harriet was born.

Why do movie directors think they can make a better story by changing almost everything that made it a great one?! Montgomery was a darling, but absolutely not the actor to play Lord Peter. The best one in my opinion was Carmichael. (And if you enjoyed Margery Allingham "Campion," the TV series kept most of the story. Albert and Lugg were perfectly portrayed by Peter Davidson and Brian Glover.)

Wish the complete film was available. This original version is great. The remakes are all dogs and can be found everywhere. So sad.

@resculptit I agree. Wimsey should be played by a Brit and Batman by an American. I enjoy the Ian Carmichael series quite a bit.

It's strange to think that Robert Montgomery was the only major Hollywood actor of the 1930s - 1940s who appeared as both Lord Peter Wimsey and Philip Marlowe!

Too bad there is only 1 episode. And the big bad guy at the beginning was also the big bad guy in the Sherlock Holmes movies of the time. The only down side was Lord Peter - an American actor - instead of a true Brit as Sayers intended. Where are the other Episodes of this mystery?

purdy but he never did busman's honeymoon which is a great shame I would like to see Harriet Walter and Edward Petherbridge complete the cycle I always feel exquisitely acted romance in the true Spirit of the books was does a disservice by not allowing it it's happy conclusion and sticking with the rather more stereotypical ending of gaudy night

This is horribly miscast - and why make just one film which is actually the end of the series of novels? Hollywood still holds the rights to Busman's Honeymoon, which is why it was never filmed as part of the Petherbridge/Walter canon. A crying shame, as it not only has a cracking plot, but also rounds off the Wimsey/Vane affair in a most satisfactory way. Incidentally, I wonder why the Wimsey novels have not been re-adapted for the 2010s? We seem to have endless repeat adaptions from the Christie oeuvre, but the Sayers works seem ignored, despite their plot lines and characterisations being far more complex and rewarding. Gaudy Night is, in my opinion, a masterpiece (the Petherbridge/Walter version didn't do it justice, in my view). Ian Carmichael's radio versions hold up very well, though.

What a travesty! Every element, every characterization is so un-Sayerslike. Only thing I recognize from the book are some of the names. Obviously trying to capitalize off the of the popularity of the books and the wrongheaded expectations of the motion picture era.
