Andy calling himself Musashi is a reference to Miyamoto Musashi, arguably the most famous samurai in history :) also works as a fun nod to how the archetype of the lone swordsman and lone gunslinger in Japanese and Western media are so closely linked together

Also the IJN Battleship Musashi.

Andy isn't stupid he's a combination of 2 things, he's face blind but he's also right about faces being unreliable which might just be a convenient excuse to cover up his being face blind... Also the horse is Whistling

Andy being a literal palette swap of Spike is truly the best

I hope you guys give the show creators other shows a chance like Samurai Champloo, space dandy, kids on the slope, and Carol & Tuesday. As a reaction or personally they really are unique shows

wait, does Andy whistle his own theme? if so there's a parallel with Spike whistling the blues in the first episode.

I like how despite being a total idiot, Andy is one of like three or four people in the entire series who can fight Spike on equal footing and actually give him a bit of an ass kicking.
@MageBurger Жыл бұрын
This is why Battle IQ is it’s own separate category. Also I partly feel Spike was weakened by his blind rage specifically at being offended by the parallels of Andy to himself, but still not enough to take from Andy’s talents. Ted Baumer literally put Spike on the same level as Andy at the beginning, so Andy must be good at some bounties to have any reputation at all in the first place.

Crazy how they just straight up made a character based off Ted Kaczynski. Also love this episode for the many meta moments. Spoilers for most of the rest of this comment, btw. The whole episode, but especially the "See you space cowboy" from Andy is a great way for the show to acknowledge one of its heaviest thematic influences. Although in retrospect the cowboy hat is 100% a death flag. The archetype of the outlaw seeking redemption is one that almost never gets a happy ending. Cowboy Bebop is certainly a genre-defying show, but much like Spike, you can't run from the past forever. Eventually you have to turn and face it. This episode is where that turn is made for the show and everything starts to come to a close.

Really well said, thank you. This episode always stood out to me as having deeper symbolism/meaning than I knew how to express, or even interpret. Hope the weight you carry isn't too heavy, stranger.

In the beginning of the video when you mention that they wouldn't have wired devices in the future; that is a great example of a literary and artistic term called "Retro-Futurism." Basically it's how we envision the future from an earlier era. Like in Alien all of the devices resemble old-school IBM computer terminals with the pixelated text. If you look at old scientific magazines from the turn of the 20th century there are examples of "automatic brooms" which essentially was imagining vacuum cleaners and Roombas in an earlier context. And there you go, your fun/boring fact of the day!

I'm fully convinced the reason he always shows up in the right place despite having no clue who he's even looking for is because the horse carries him to the right spot

Lol I just watched this episode and it was so funny that I wanted to see others react to it and I realized that the scenes in german dub are completely different than in english dub. In german the scenes with Faye and Andy are even funnier. The thing is the wordplay they used would also work in english which makes me wonder which dub deviates from the original. For example the scene with Faye and Andy in the elevator in german is more like. Faye: What a great stud. Andy: Yeah and the horse isn't half bad either. Faye: Could I take it for a ride? The scene where she eats dinner with him deviates in the same direction with the double meanings.

Best episode! When you guys finish the series (and movie) I hope you watch Steak Bentley's "Cowboy Bebop and the West", which is THE best look at the series. It goes deeply into this episode in particular. Many heroes have villains that are a dark reflection of themselves. That role is fulfilled by Vicious. Andy is the Funhouse Mirror reflection of Spike.
