Hii Vinamra. This is one of the most wonderful episodes I have seen on Dostcast. To add to that I came across an incident where in me and my brothers genuinely felt a sense of social deprivation. We went to a feast arranged by a Brahman family and we had to sit with a group of again Brahman people, one of them being a teacher too. We sat on our places and food was served then right after it my youngest brother started eating without actually allowing the Brahmans to start first which is a so called norm in my native place. And after that one of the Brahman people saw it and got off his place immediately and started scolding my brother and also eventually making us realize that we belong to a slightly inferior social caste which is an OBC. I was shocked not because the Brahman person told that but because the person was actually the teacher I was talking about earlier. My brother was just about 14 years old and being born and brought up in an urban society he was aware of all these norms. Really caste discrimination sucks.

Why don't all those who pretend to back caste-based reservations, be it politicians, bureaucrats, academics like Chauhan, etc. vow to avail services of only those who've benefited from the caste-based reservation system ? Get your house built by a civil engineer by a SC/ST/OBC civil engineer who scored 40%, or get treated by a medical doctor who's scored 40-50% yet got into engineering & medical college respectively ? Ban all politicians, bureaucrats etc. from going abroad for medical treatment. Caste will remain in India for eternity, as even non-Hindus do have caste classifications, even it it's not spoken of openly. As for UPSC, there are scores of so-called 'backward caste' people who have gamed the system despite their privileged upbringing. E.g. Devyani Khobragade (father too became IAS officer as 'dalit'), Tina Dabi (became IAS despite parents too senior civil servants), Tina Dabi's sister too got into IAS cadre, and more recently Puja Khedkar. Will Dalit apologists like Vijender Chauhan ever condemn such delinquency among 'backward castes' ? Shouldn't there be a cap on 'creamy layer' from benefiting from quota system ? Finally, majority of even so-called 'upper caste' esp Brahmins are not wealthy nor resourceful like Vijender Chauhan claims here. Bihar me 66% jobs are with sc/st/obc. How is that discrimination? And thankfully Nitish split OBCs in EBCs to give hope to lower caste. The podcaster takes umbrage to privilege from some upper caste, but the same middle caste wants to be new upper caste to dalits - Jat, Jutt sikhs, Gujjars, Marathas. With all due respect to Dr. Vijender Chauhan, I believe in the importance of social as well as economic mobility. However, I am against viewpoint that the marker of annihilation of caste system, would be proportionate representation of said "castes" at all levels and in all fields. As there are several other factors that affect an individual's inclination towards a field. Even on a macro level, it is difficult to hope for that. I sympathise with the discriminated, and oppose the discriminators, and those who claim reservation can solve it. Consider the following scenario. Scenario: An SC candidate from a non privileged background gets admitted to an IIT. His family has high hopes of an exponential social mobility. However, the companies set JEE RANK Cutoff(as the top companies do) and the guy isn't able to even appear. Even if they don't, a student from a general or OBC category who'd have scored more marks than him in JEE, will probabilistically always have an edge over him, when it comes to intellect. Whose fault is it? Company pays a lot, so they want the top candidates irrespective of their caste, background etc. This candidate was, probabilistically never in a fair competition. The other candidates can't be asked to not do their best. Conclusion : He gets in a premier institute, lands a mediocre job or worse none. Data shows, over 13,500 non general candidates dropped out due to pressure of academics. And if companies are made to chose proportionately, they'd rather not come and reach out to top candidates via other means. I am too inexperienced to propose a solution, but sensible enough to know that it is not what has been proposed and been implemented over years. Although the depravation and privilege points make sense, but only if, they are taken into account after a round of shortlisting based on marks.

How wrongly the Lateral Entry thing was explained....govt did not gave reservations in the Lateral Entry because there were only 1 or 2 seats available for every different sectors...so how can govt make division of seats in different castes....and not some specific sectors could be given by caste wise, that these sectors seats are for generals , these are for SC etc etc....and Lateral Entry is made because for specific sectors only that specific expert man/women could be hired who knows the sector well and have a huge experience and knows the flaws in sector that he/she to run the sector...cause normally it is taken by IAS and no IAS is totally expert in some sector.....this podcast is easily understood that for the political places it is wearing a glasses from which only propaganda have to be run.

Basic needs like education, housing and nutrition are not privileges, they are rights. A child has the right to these things no matter where she is born. Things like proximity to power and access to certain things are a privilege. But that privilege might not always be stolen. The professor here paints it as a black and white picture, which is not the case. Caste is a grave problem in our society but eradicating it can't guarantee equality for everybody. As humans, we tend to feel superior by creating divisions and treading over them by nature. There can never be an equal society because someone who's superior will always want their heirs to be superior too. They won't care about unfairness. Admission of deprived students through positive discrimination is also great to an extent but is mostly a facade since the one making all these schemes is the one whose ancestors scored superiority. There's nothing to be ashamed of, just try to improve things around you and keep on living your life knowing that you'd also do anything possible to get your child any access she needs.

The bigger the caste problem is, the less likely it would be to achieve equality. You keep making it sound like equality is caused by the absence of caste (which I never said). "It's impossible to create an undivided and egalitarian society" is neither a lame excuse and nor pessimistic. In fact, it makes us consider the default human nature and inspires us to make an effort so that we don't go by our raw instincts while making important decisions in this regard. I belong to a so called Brahmin family , but believe me that noone has ever asked me for any financial assistance, getting any place in educational institutions without hard work, struggling for jobs in every crisis just as usual, or getting any preference.
