Heroes usually possess several of the roles inherently. Night Stalker fx. is mainly a ganker, but he can easily be made tanky. Or Broodmother, who is mainly used for pushing, can also carry if given the feed. Each hero has their roles listed when you're selecting them.

Carrys are far easier to play then supports and i encourage them to my new friends. Right clicking after a support has worked their ass off giving you kills. And at the end you can brag about your better kill death ratio because the support actually sacrifices themselves for you

Dude early game supports can push the game , after 25 min carry and semi carry rule the game is so simple , when you play dota for 1-2 years you think that you know everything .... but (is always a but in this game )

That's were the "limitation" of a player kicks in, experience have showed me that player who plays support first then go carry are most likely better than those who just go carry all the way. Being a support will give you a better reflex since you'll probably depend on the skill you have and yes it is harder(mainly because of the frustation of buying items for the team having one mistake and completely throwing the game(example is wards) but it is better to play as a support first.

You forgot the Disabler, Roamer, Escape, Lane Support and the other role thats not been added in Dota 2 since old players knew it in the Original Dota is the Spell Caster Role

First of all, lane support is the babysitter which SUNSfan mentioned disabler.roamers, and escape are just what they do I mean like for escape all they do is escape death they dont do anything special for the team just escaping death and for disabler all u do is like stun a target and ur done like pudge or earthshaker and for roamers they are a bit like junglers since they do move or ream the area a lot

I think there needs to be report for not playing according to roles. I hate the mid that never ganks. I hate the roamers who never come to your lane and helps, sole supports who still refuse to buy courier or wards, etc. I would love to see a new game mode (for experienced players) where players are randomly assigned a role (eg, 2 supports, 1 hard carry, 1 mid/ganker, 1 offlaner, or something along the lines of this). Players can then only pick heros that meet the definition of the role they are assign. That way, they have to play that role or be reported for not doing it. I'm sick of having a team of 3/4 hard carries.

"I hate the mid that never ganks." This sentence alone shows everybody that you have no clue of Dota, as there are some heroes that are great mid heroes but should concentrate on getting farm and/or destroy towers instead of gank, for example Dragon Knight or Naga Siren. You have to pick according to the needs instead of picking ultra hardcarries in every game. For example if you have a Naga mid, you cannot go for Antimage/Phantom Lancer/Void because you will have no chance in midgame if your enemy isn't dumb. In this case it's smarter to go for 2 semicarries/nukers + 2 supports, as this will help you to sustain early- to midgame. It also means that the sidelanes have to support each other and the mid. Complaining about sole supports not buying anything also tells me that you play at a pretty low level because there should never be only one support. When I play support in pubs and the last pick of my team isn't a support I refuse to do all the report stuff, too because me getting some utility items instead of constant wards doesn't hurt the team as much as this idiot picking a 3rd carry. Period. Also you should ask yourself if there is a sole support, why didn't you repick?

B20C0 The only time you shouldn't leave mid to gank is when you have heros who aren't strong early game in its safer to get get farm in mid. I would expect a Medusa mid to just stay because she cannot gank well. But having Pudges and Huskar, who are really good at ganking, but don't do it...they would benefit more from getting kills off in a successful gank - Pudge especially for gaining strength with every kill, and if they have picked up an urn. I have been in games where are lanes get pushed hard, we get no help from the mid hero who could gank to alleviate the pressure. About sole supports - yes I am in comparison to some players quite new to the game. But pub matches are, at least until you get to really high level, dominated by people who pick carries with no regard for team composition. Its not my fault for a team that wont pick considering the team line-up. Most pubs have few supports, that is just a fact. And when it happens, I'm sick of being expected to do everything as I often pick support just so there is one - but I'm sick of being treated as the punching bag for people to take their rage out on because I cannot do everything alone (rage often because they do stupid things, or because they are countered by a proper team). And sometimes I do go carry, merely so I can practice it and get better. If I ever last pick, I will pick according to the team composition. Sometimes I first pick, and if people don't pick support, they have no reason to complain for no wards. If they last pick carries and our team is full of them, its clear that they never cared about team composition in the first place. But sometimes you will see somebody pick somebody like silencer, and despite already having 4 other carries, they also try to carry and don't support. In this case, I'd like to report them.

The two main roles are carry and support. The others are basically sub-roles for how the hero is played well within that carry or support role. For instance Lich is meant mainly for a support role but his attacks can dish out a large amount of damage in a short amount of time putting him under the category of a nuker also.

I'm a bit of a newbie as well but to my knowledge a snowball is when a hero gets a few good kills early game which allows them to level faster and earn more gold which allows them to be more effective and more deadly later in the game so they get more kills and gold which makes them more effective and the process cycles. The reason this very noticeable on Pudge is because he also gains strength for every kill with his passive ability Flesh Heap.

I switched from lol to dota 2 and after 130 games i can finally tell dat i can play this game. Dota provides more powerful heroes than lol so that means it doesnt forgive mistakes. Thats why its not noob-friendly so u must be very patient not to quit this shit. The most annoying thing at the beginnig is the variety of animation times like, auto attack, spell casting or even hero turning. Second is courier and units control. If u master those things u will not back to lol cause its soooo booring. Merry christmas.

Her swap saves the carry. Her aura buffs the carry's damage. Her wave of terror lowers the armour of enemies, allowing easier kills for the carry. Her stun is allround a great spell. I love playing vs as a carry with deso and manta, but she's mostly seen as a support because of her abilities.

Yea I got the roles idea, there are pretty much 10 theoretical roles, but to understand which heroes suit which role and to understand why and whos the best you need to check them all out and play like 100 games and to put your soul into it, so much work

if a videogame can be stressful to you, i shudder to think of what happened to your life. I dont really see how dota 2 is mazelike since theres only one map lol. And the gameplay and tactics are only terrible to guys who play simple shooter games which honestly are for literal rockheads who cant handle anything more than just aiming and shooting. And you dont even have to play every hero. Usually the one that visually appears the most appealing to you will be the hero youre most comfortable with. About "terrible graphics" dota 2 came out in like 2009-2010, and at least its graphics live up to expectations (yes im looking at you watch dogs)

I was playing today and again when you don't know every hero it's hard to play because you don't know who fits who, so I played and then people are calling me noob and stuff cause I didn't know that I should have stand still when some hero used a magic on me, cause I didn't know that heros skills. you must like play every hero a few times so you will know whos doing what and how to counter and how to take less damage and to know when to run. It's a hard game if you want to be a good player. everybody can just get in there and play for fun but you just won't be a good player if you just play "for fun"

Le Kipzs It doesn't help one bit to know that, say, Io has Spirits call unless you see how it works in the game and you have no idea how to use them before you watch someone else playing and manipulating them. And that's 1 skill, which takes a minute to carefully read and try to understand and memorize, then watch a 10 min play video which may or may not answer all your questions. So 1 hour medium per skill research to know what it is, minus be able to use. 109 hours only to know who has what. Not less than 48 full hours, that's for sure.

@Rubentje7 It's funny, because snowball is actually a really well known ability in Dota1, that belongs to a hero called Tuskar (not in Dota 2 yet). In the context of this video though, the term snowball describes gankers. Pudge and tiny both "snowball" into very dangerous threats if fed with a couple kills early. Pudge gets flesh str for each kill and thus gets more powerful, and Tiny may not be THAT dangerous really early but if fed can get a quick blink and can get out of hand fast.

Support is by far the easiest roll to learn, as it means your mistakes don't necessarily result in as much detriment to your team as a roll such as carry. It is also a good way to learn the game as you go, because as you support other heros you'll learn them as well. Easy supports to start out with would be: Vengfull spirit, Crystal maiden, Venomancer, Lich, and Tidehunter.

An assist count as well as total deaths on team/map would be useful in determining whether a player has 'fed' o any degree in a game. A supports' view of death is that they should if it will save a more useful member of the team or if it is necessary to enable some situation heavily favorable to their team (something like a tripple-kill or a good push). 0 kills is good if your carry or someone got them.

I like how the speed that team took down that tower and barracks was slower than I did it as Lycan at level 20 with about 350 damage average, and an insane attack speed. Solo won the game then, I got attacked by the whole enemy team but barely survived, and creeps finished the Ancient. It was glorious, they lost so hard. Lycan, man, he gets crazy with a few dead towers and a massive sword.

The main roles are Ganker, Support, and Carry. Jungling, Nuking, Tanking, and Initiating are just things heroes can do. You can be a Jungling Tanking Ganker (Axe) or a Nuking Initiating Carry (Nevermore). But usually if you're a Ganker you shouldn't be a Carry, although in some cases it might work (Vengeful Spirit).

From my understanding, Tank, Pusher, Ganker, and Jungler are optional. Though it is also possible for certain heroes to fulfill multiple roles, like Pudge is a ganker and a tank.

yes he can. He can also be a very good support in the lane, make sure you gank a few times in the early to mid game, to ensure a good game throughout. Equip yourself with a stout shield too. To tank up attack. Start with a lower NC camp then move your way to stack them up. Your ion-shell should do you good =)

@MartinezMKD His corrosive skin not only slows the enemy attack speed, but also their move speed, it also cause them to receive damage. Kinda like Spectre. That passive works it best when an enemy is attacking Viper. And when you want enemy to attack you, you should build it tanky. Also that corrosive skin increased Viper magic resistance by 25% on lvl 4. But it depends on the situation or your playstyle. As for me I prefer building tanky if there is no tanker on my side.

This is a great example of all the potential roles in the game. I sometimes feel there is another role, ANTI-CARRY, which is a hero who through removing attack speed or damage, severely damages the enemy carries potential. Examples would be Bane, Viper, Razor and item choices such as Eye of Skaadi and Shiva's Guard. But there isn't enough heroes like this to be a role. Also what about Disabler?

Sand king is a good pusher, when i play as him he has the ability to take out large heros and creeper waves like nothing. However he is very dependant on leveling and semi dependant on items. Makes a good tank as long as you have the items.

its because he is a melee carry that has good built in lifesteal to counteract the harass he takes when he goes in for last hit. also paired with someone who can stun or slow will allow lane dominance as they would fear the chain slows/stuns = death.

Initiator = Is the one that INITIATES teamfights in mid and late game. Usually because they have AoE nukes/stuns (Like Enigma). So they start with the stun and the rest of the team can jump on them. Ganker = A hero that tries to find solo targets (early game) away from towers. Usually heroes that are good 1v1 (like Pudge) or with great burst damage (like Tiny).

Jakiro is support with AoE nukes and a little pushing power. There are no summoner spells, though Hand of Midas works similarly. The Problem: it takes almost 1.9k gold to farm and doesn't pay off in gold before you were using it 20 minutes (earlier in exp, keep in mind it doesn't work on ancients and Roshan).

Good guide, however there are hybrids. As somebody said lycan jungler / carry, enigma jungler / pusher / initiator / ganker etc. The best lineup is 1 carry, 1 semi carry ganker, 1 hard support, 1 semi support and initiator.

Initiators have better AoE in their spells and has effects commonly used to disable many heroes in a team fight. While pushers have smaller AoE spells which have less cooldown to kill creep waves faster than any other role.

@jackbwise umm.... he did talk about initiators. Also, only few of the initiators actually go for Tanky items. ES for example has no "need" to stay alive after he jumps in and uses his combo. If you actually have gold to spare after getting your mana boots and blink, you are better off helping your hard support with warding or by building CC items etc. than going for items that help you stay alive longer.

No, 'snowball' refers to the 'snowball effect', that something small (i.e. a few kills here and there) can grow into something large and devastating (i.e. good equipments and skills and stuff), just like a snowball racing down a hill, gathering more snow as it goes, and growing bigger :)

Attenuate. Sunsfan likes to make up words. The definition is similar to Compliment, Mitigate or Reduce. To attenuate the skillset of a hero that needs to take a lot of damage would mean to build health items or damage reducers like armor or damage block so that they can receive more damage without dieing. @Dakeyras83 Yeah you have a point. Having solo exp and good gold on every hero would of course be the perfect scenario, but obviously very hard to achieve. The fact remains that most of the better teams usually go for a "no gold" support hero that spend most gold on wards/smoke/detection and it's usually quite successful. There are heroes that doesn't really benefit much at all from having expensive items. Lich being such a hero, maiden to some extent and arguably a bunch of other heroes.

@OxMxFxG123 There are tanks in dota but the makers of DotA just simplified it into 3 roles: Carry, Ganker, and initiatior. Viper can be a tank if you build him with Hp items. Purge can be a tank if you build him with Hp items but you have to be a BOSS. And Cw can be a tank but his skills become useless late game.

In my honest opinion, I think supporting is the most difficult role. The reason being that as a support, you can set the pace of the game. Choosing when to leave your carry to gank another lane, when to pull, how to pull properly, when to ward, how to ward, when to deward, etc etc. As a carry, all you do is farm farm farm farm farm, take the credit for the win. Honestly, without decent supports, no matter how good you are as a carry, you can't farm that well.

Two things i love: Push competition! When the enemy is pushing on lane and my team pushes another lane! Its so fun to see who defends first! And who win with that defend... I have a tip that helped me at least know things about Dota 2. 1.) Watch Dota 2 Mythbusters 2.) Play every hero 1-5 times against bots, cheats on if you're really new While you don't get much idea from how they play in a real match, you get to know all the spells better and can have a general idea of what a hero can do to you.

Jakiro can actually fill most roles except carry (Unless the other team picks all squishy supports for god knows what reason), He can move to the jungle later on so he gets a bit of farm for some items without taking lane farm from a carry. He shines as a ganking and pushing support though, as his abilities make most heroes cry early and late game alike, and having some items to support your team just makes you a complete nuisance to deal with

actually jakiro isnt picked up a lot but he can be consider a support-disabler mostly.there something similar to smite.its an item called hand of midas.but it is used mostly to increase someone's income and not to make jungling easier or faster.since it has a cd of 100 and also gives 100 gold upon use.if u want to make your jungle easier you can just ''pull'' ur creep camp

Example: QoP who is a ganker/initiator who can become a carry if her farm greatly exceeds the farm of a hardcarry. On the other hand is a hard carry like faceless void whom is agi-based, farmdependent and doesnt require long cooldown abilities to deal damage in the lategame. Other semi-carries could be, Spirit breaker, Kunkka and many others.

Although in some pro team a support might sacrifice themselves for the carry, I would be against doing it with randoms as you do not know their skill level and you might need to be one of the core members if they suck. In this case, consider trying to slow the enemy hero, block their path (if enough hp) or just do some damage to make them think twice. Dota games rarely go how they should.

Disablers are more like a hero category then a role. Having disables are not depending on the role or play style and every role have typical heroes we could call disablers.

I think so too. I started dota2 after lol I think that dota2 is better because the character balance is very good so there are no op champions if not sustained and the variety of roles make it more amusing to play.

@jackbwise Actually tanking can be quite important on team fights. If all your enemy's spells are on cooldown the chance that you are going to win the fight is quite high. Of course that a good team won't burn all cd on 1 hero, but even just 1 or 2 spells can make a big impact on the fight.

@MAATIR y, "real" tanks are some kind of carrys, they must deal lots of damage and they need much farm. The heroes he mentioned are "tanky" and not pure tanks. The difference between carry and tank can sometimes be hard to define, but generally carrys do more dps than tanks and doesnt tank as well. tanks for me are necro, dk, alchemist, doom, krob, dusa, spectre, (undying), thats about it.

Actually the best tanks in dota are Centaur Warchief and Abaddon (Both not released yet) who used to play dota 1 will agree with that, since centaur self scale well with strengh and return damage, and abaddon has a shield and a IMBA ult who can turn 300 hp in full life if used well.

Farm is well, the amount of gold you can "farm" from enemies, a relatively low farm means a low gold per minute, which means less high quality items, etc.

snowball means that a hero like pudge or tiny will grow stronger and stronger as long as they have a successful early and mid game (pudge gains str for each hero kill for example)

@RockingTheFro Usually nukers are under the support label (support, not hard support or the infamous ward b****). Since they don't need lots of gold (normally just for a arcane boots or something similar) they can get items to support the team, like Mek, Pipe or Drums. Lich is a perfect example of a support nuker.

Ah yeah, He does use a lot of practical terms. Carry = Hero that becomes strong after he gets his levels+items, usually the one that will CARRY the team, cause he will kill all other enemy heroes. Support = Warder (for vision on the map and to see invisible enemies/wards) and supports the Carry, making sure the carry can get his exp and gold at the start. Support doesn't KILL creeps & doesn't farm (only leeches exp from standing next to the farmer). The carry needs the gold the most.

Sven is probably best played as a carry IMO. He can go support, but that's more if you screw up early game.

Well, not all junglers necessarily need to farm. Off the top of my head, Enchantress and Chen are great gankers even right off the bat. I'm pretty sure Chen doesn't even need to farm much to be effective either since he's pretty much a support who just happens to do the best while in the jungle.

i actually did this in an all random dota 1 game. skadi and assault cuirass, mek, and vlads. we had 5 carries, so i stacked aura items and the skadi let me slow their main carry and have some hp to live. i bought the wards and such as well. it worked out ok.

Any lane pusher are counterpusher, since they can destroy enemy creeps in seconds, which they did mention. Chen is more of a towerpusher, which makes him not so good for lane-pushing.

Back in Dota1 when there are no specific roles given to heroes. Where Vengeful Spirit and Venomancer were played as carries. No one used "durable" back then, but as sure as heck they did use "some1 pick tank pls" and they'd go for Axe or som'n.

Queen of pain is more likely side carry or semi carry, she can out carry all heroes in the map 30 minutes in the game but when its like 40mins her ulti wouldn't do much..

Kotl is best defending hero/counterpusher. Frost Wyvern is also gret counterpusher because of safety of range of their spells. Chen is great pusher but he is louzy at counterpushes. There are subtle differences there.

@dadush4 I'd put nuker in the ganker category. As for semi-carry- that seems to be to be a term used for carries that don't have a lot of utility. Example: sniper. He's a carry, but if going against another carry head to head will often lose to another hero that has better utility (like void with his bashes).
