Like you, I use Evernote every day! First and foremost as a document store. I went paperless about 5 years ago. So with my simple Fujitsu multi-sheet scanner, all my post goes straight (automatically) to Evernote and then the paper goes in the bin :-) With Evernote OCR all the letter, bills, concert programmes, instruction manuals, receipts etc are so easy to find it later ...... it's just brilliant! :-) PS Mobile camera for when you're out and about or when you just want to capture a delivery note for intance is brilliant as well !

@ Please explain, and provide examples. Over the years I have given OneNote a serious go, but could not get it to do as good as Evernote. Yes, one can create fancy Word type documents in OneNote. With OneNote copy a web page the links do not come across, syncing is very slow, tags are a mess; I could go on. For storing notes and documents, PDF, creating notes, and scanning, and the like even Apple Notes is much better than OneNote. Many of us use mobile devices, OneNote on mobile does not do as well as Evernote. Admittedly Evernote web does have issues, but not as much as OneNote.

I have watched many KZbin channel speak about how unsatisfied they have been with Evernote. Yes I also have been disappointed with no major upgrades; until I caught onto what Evernote is doing. Steve said it himself when he goes from his desktop to his phone it is different. Evernote has been trying to make Evernote the same on every platform whether android, iOS, Mac or Windows.

I’ve been a subscriber to it for probably 10 years or more now. My wife and I live and die by it. It hasn’t changed much over the years which I’m thankful for. I have asked for some new functions and features. So thankful they aren’t throwing in new features or making changes and breaking it. We rely on it and need to to be super reliable which they have done a great job for me so far.

Thank you Steve. I've been a premium member for more than five years and I use Evernote every day, multiple times a day. It replaces piles of little notes and cut-out articles that I used to hoard, and I use it for keeping track of client projects (I'm a designer) and sources and everything else, actually! I appreciate all that you said, which was kind of a review of what I already learned from you a while ago, but which I want to start using--i.e. the camera, using the web-links to share content. I enjoy the way you present :)

Using Evernote since 2008 (unless I altered some created dates) and subscribed soon after since I found it so useful. Have looked at most of the competitors since - most recently because I have one laptop on Linux and Evernote doesn't (yet?) have a Linux client, though they seem to be thinking about it... but I still haven't found a workable alternative and Evernote at least has the web version(s) that I can use if necessary. Like you I use Evernote every day, and am currently pushing 50,000 notes. Thanks for the video - it's an excellent reminder why Evernote, despite its ongoing faults, is still my first choice for a central data store.

Thanks so much for the tip on how the webclipper also adds the search of evernote notes to Google search results. Though I've been using EN for over 10 years, I'd never been compelled about the web clipper (odd, I know, as it seems one of the core features for you). But since I never used it, I never knew that they'd added that ability to have it add to search results. That's sweet! And I'm only a plus plan user (a grandfathered plan, below premium), and I can confirm it works with that also. Again, thanks, as always.

I ❤ Evernote. I started using Lotus Notes when I got a Palm Pilot. This replaced a Mom Physical Notebook that was 5 inches thick. Suddenly, I didn't need to keep printouts, I could just electronically file things. My back was so happy. Then IBM bought Lotus, and Y2K happened, and IBM did not update Notes. I was Bereft! I tried Outlook but it was kind of clunky, but I could port Notes. Then Evernote showed up, it could port the Notebook part of Outlook. And integrated with whatever, because it's web interface was better. And then we got an android phone, and my pc was still windows, and I had Firefox and it all just worked. It still does. I do use notebooks and tags. Things come from all over, titles don't often relate. All my nail color formulas are tagged nails, and I don't even have the word nails in all of them. But I do have pictures of the color reference sticks my nail lady uses, and how the nails should look. All my trips live in individual folders, with cross reference tags to Event and Year. So if I want to remember something I did in 2017. Or I did for an event but can't remember the year. The tags will find it, because the tags make sure they all match up. But back to notebooks. I do find it easier to browse a notebook when I am not exactly sure what I'm looking for. Also Notebooks are easy to download onto my cellphone. I do this with trips a lot. Then when I'm trying to find the hotel reservation, I don't need the internet. This has saved my bacon more than once. I email all my reservations to Evernote now. The integration to Google is getting better and better. Not just Chrome, but Drive and other things. I see my Green Elephant and explore what Google/Evernote is doing now. And my favorite hack, adding files to the Homescreen. Things I need to remember Real Soon, like packing lists, To Do Notes, I put them on a page of my phone where I can access them quickly. When I'm done with them, they get taken off the "home screen", but the file remains in Evernote, in case I need it again. Right now, I'm planning a trip, the packing list and the Google Map (you can share Maps with Evernote), both Evernote pages are sitting on my Evernote home screen.

LisaMarli I’m with you! I discovered Evernote with my Palm Pilot, and absolutely love it. I couldn’t imagine switching, and believe me I’ve tried other Evernote wannabes. I think their yearly rates are reasonable and well worth it, and I think they still have a free version for those who feel they won’t use it enough to upgrade. 👍
@LisaMarli
@LisaMarli 4 жыл бұрын
@ No, it just means it's free. I mostly work with Chrome and have an android phone. Microsoft products are very insistent that they add their layer of intrusion into your system if you use any of their products. And have they ever updated the tags problem? That's why I left, tags are my sort friend.

It's still #1 to me too and I hope to still be using it another 10 years from now. I have probably used it literally throughout the day, EVERY DAY for many many years. I've tinkered with others but they are not as good or as appealing to use. Ditto on the app camera. It's great for text, documents, photos, biz cards... I use the audio recorder as my voice recorder while driving. I use it's reminders when the reminder is complex and requires a note. I use the templates for weekly Todo lists and staff meetings. I tag the sh*t out of my notes and order them that way. Right now I'm planning a trip and all those notes are tagged for easy finding. Life without Evernote would be harder. Good video. 👍

You've just renewed my love affair with Evernote. Like you, I had taken Evernote for granted even though she has been with me everyday. She sort of became invisible to me. But I guess this is also the hallmark of a good tool. You never need to be conscious of it's existence, until it's gone of course. You just use it without thinking. But even then, you would still love to take her out for a good dinner or renew your vow with each other :) Well, I guess your video is a timely reminder for me after my almost 10 years relationship with Evernote. Thank you!

I always tell people that if things ain’t broke, why fix it. In my personal life, and previous business life, Evernote is and was finely integrated. No reason to change, although I do look at contenders now and then. I have been a premium user since the beginning and have never looked back. Fun Fact: I wrote my Batchelor thesis on computerized Personal Information Management Systems. This was back in 1984. Evernote is all I envisioned then.

I think that a lot of it is a matter of individual needs and priorities. Some people value the functionalities of Evernote and will (probably) not steer away from it for a long time because their daily lives absolutely require those functionalities. I know for myself that I've made the switch to Notion because I was valuing the elegance and flexibility of my workspace over the practical functions that Evernote has, simply because my need for those wasn't as essential as the peace of mind that Notion has brought me. Everyone has their own circumstances and their own way of getting things done.
@dottotech

Indeed, If you like to craft your content Notion is going to be far more elegant than the "fire and forget" nature of Evernote.

Heh, I agree. Been using Evernote since 2010 and have accumulated ~3500 notes. I like to complain about the quirkiness of command names such as "Move note to trash" vs "delete" or "Expunging notes". I have never found a replacement tool. I do like the way you use your shortcuts and may consider revamping my many bookmarks which I sync to all my devices and browsers with Eversync, although probably not. Thanks! Doug

I have had an Evernote basic account for 11 years and rarely use it. I have tried several times but I do not work in a team but I do use 2 mobile devices and several computers. In order to do that I would have to pay $120 US a year (about $160 CDN) for the privilege. Another way to think about it: Evernote is for the big, tagged piles of stuff + search kind of person. OneNote's more geared towards filing notes into a folder hierarchy and using search to grab notes from all the disparate branches of the folder tree.

The solution to folders are tags with sub tags. Example tag: project name > worker-bee > vendor, and the like. As the project changes, people and vendors come and go then to that file you then add remove tags. Yes, filing cabinets containing manila folders were excellent; except when we forgot which cabinet or folder it was placed in. A file may encompass more than one person, project, time frame, and the like, using folders a document will reside in one folder only. Our work paradigm shifted to computers performing grunt work. As the project changes one or more tags can be added and removed. Searching by tag (or document content) you do not need knowing where it is as it will instantly be found. Do keep in mind the Internet relies on tagging not folders. As for export and migration I completely agree with you.

As much as visual search is inefficient, I do wish I could visually manage some notes with a flag, color code, maybe even arranging notes within a notebook. The Search and List paradigms are too limiting for creative knowledge management. I'd really love to search only within note titles or just notes created within EN and not clipped.

Would you recommend Evernote to someone who wants to start out with a note-taking app in 2019 and isn't committed to anything yet (i.e. doesn't have large amounts of notes stored somewhere)?

Yes. Not an Evernote user at present, but it's one of the best solutions I came across in a recent pretty intensive notetaker search I did. It may not be exciting, but the old grognard is still easily among the best in the business. If I could stack notebook stacks I might've just started using it then and there.

@@Komatik_ Thanks. Yea I've started using it more intensely and it works really well. I am especially impressed by the search functionality. It's so quick and thorough.

With the amount of data that I am dumping into Evernote daily, I often shudder at the thought of them losing it. With all the syncing between devices I'm amazed and thankful for the integrity of the data management. I'm not sure what I'd do the day they start losing data. 🔐

I'm a Microsoft heavy user and I also use OneNote for work. But the workflow (and the intention to my mind) of both systems can't be compared. Especially for long-term filing and also for Webclipping Evernote is SO MUCH better... OneNote is good for actually "working" with notes. At least that are just my 2 cent.

Off topic I know but would you know of a basic textedit, notes type app (or something else) that I can use to primarily do what GetPocket does ie. share links as well as snippets of text etc from iOS to and from Mac... as well as Windows (which is where it gets difficult). Aware that there are a zillion notes apps out there, but they are all massive beasts, and I am talking about something really simple. Enjoy your videos quite a bit btw. Thanks!

Evernote version 10 is, according to Evernote's community page on FB, a disaster. Curious what other's think as I am holding off until the issues are resolved. However, the legacy version is still available to work along side version 10 for those who want to give it a test drive.

I skip all of these dramas by keeping my data in open formats that don't need to depend on a particular brand of tool. That way, I can hop from one tool to another. I no longer spend any time agonizing over what will happen to Evernote. Sure, I'm giving up some of the conveniences, but they are relatively minor, and I found many ways to recreate an alternative workflow on my term. I can search by keyword. I can embed media objects, syncing among all my devices, and so on.
