Google Meet - A Good Zoom Alternative?

Google has released the business class Online Meeting tool, Meet, for free to everyone with a Google account.
Meet is a very basic video conferencing app, but light years ahead of it's little sister, Google Hangouts in terms of ease of use and user interface.
But is it a viable alternative to Zoom?
Yes, for basic tasks, meeting, and screen sharing but that is currently how far it goes. Although Meet does have a very nifty feature which is on the fly closed captioning.

Having mostly used Zoom for church small groups and family gatherings, I got used to it very quickly. The primary drawback to the free version is the 40-minute limitation. To my knowledge the free Google Meet has no time limit. Perhaps you mentioned this in your comparison and I missed it. Anyway...thanks for another thorough and entertaining review.

Hi Steve, for me the choice was simple. I am a teacher and my School District does not allow the use of Zoom. I was excited to use the features Zoom has, and Zoom quickly responded to my request to lift their 40-minute time limit. Once I focused on Meet, I found the available features more than adequate. With the addition of a few Chrome extensions, such as Grid View and Nod, my virtual classes function quite well. Additionally, Google Meet is a natural fit with the Google Suite environment that my school uses. Thanks for another great video :)

I love the fact that when you are sharing a tab, if you click on another tab there is a "Switch to this tab" option as opposed to stop sharing one tab, then find the tab you want to share. I find Meet to be easier to use and very high quality and is now my "Go to" option if I only need to Meet or share a screen. Zoom is still far superior for sharing screen (including iPad etc) and Breakout Rooms are a must for networking events etc.

Exactly, but how is this a bad thing? As a consumer, you're already a product. All that changes is whether they make money off of you by you giving up your money or whether they make money off of their sponsors investing their money because of how many people are in there.

Google is offering a product which enables meetings of up to 100 participants, but there are no hosting controls to enable large groups to be managed effectively. In fact, the concept of a 'host' is largely missing from the Google Meet product. In particular, the absence of 'mute all' and 'unmute all' functionality, together with control over screen sharing between host and participant, makes Meet unusable for any gathering which is focused around a significant presentation to more than a few people. So, for informal gatherings of a small number of colleagues, Meet is ok. But for anything approaching an event in 'lecture' style, the lack of controls to enable a managed teaching environment is a deal-breaker.

Thanks so much for taking the time to make your videos. As a college teacher during the pandemic, I was a bit overwhelmed with learning a whole new online teaching platform like zoom-and on short notice! (Although I’ve taught college web courses before and feel pretty technologically competent. I just like to know how to use a tool well before going in front of students.) Your videos were an absolute God-send! While the IT folks at school offered hours (yes, HOURS)-long webinars on how to use zoom, your short videos were clear, easy to understand, practical and professional. I’ve watched so many of your videos since March that it almost feels as if you’re family, like a favorite uncle whom I can go to from time to time whenever I need some good tech advice. Thank you so much!

The speech she hears poorly get written on the screen but the delay is noticable and conversations can become difficult. She has hearing aids that use blue tooth but she chooses not to use that. Another fine program. My wife and I take physical training lessons using zoom with the trainer who used to meet us at the gym. thanks for doing useful, clear, fun to watch work.

Nice summary of feature and function. With such a variety of free meeting tools out there the choice is often down to what people at the other end of the meeting use. Not having to install another app seems a plus for google meet. As for access to meet in gmail.. I saw it in one account, but not the other. Turns out I had "chat" turned off in the gmail settings to not see the old hangout chat. That setting turns meet on or off in your gmail window. Maybe that helps. One more app free (at least for people you invite) meeting option you may want to explore is skype's "Meet Now" function which generates a url and lets you meet in a browser.

This is really helpful. I like that you ran a mock meeting so we know what to look for. I would have liked to see a bit more about 'share screen' because I didn't know how that works, but this is a compare and critique not a 'how to' so I can see why those details were missing. Just so you know, the record function is available with the corporate version.

As a staff person in a nonprofit that qualifies for free a G Suite account, it seems incredibly handy to have "one stop shopping" where I set up a meeting in Google Calendar, attach all of our files on Drive to the meeting invite and send the invite to a Google group (or Contact group) containing all of the participants. It seemed worth it to me to go that route instead of using Zoom - and then I found the Zoom scheduler for Chrome extension which gives the same exact one-stop functionality though obviously uses Zoom for the meeting instead of Google Meet. Having used both, I agree that the quality of audio and video is superior on Zoom. ALSO, I find that standalone conferencing apps deliver better performance than browser-based ones. In fact, due to a Mac OS Mojave update, Meet was routinely taxing the heck out of my Mac, causing the fan to run and performance to degrade drastically until it would finally crash. This problem is well documented online and the best solution I could find was to upgrade to OS X Catalina which has indeed solved the crashing issue. I still think it is more taxing to run browser-based conferencing apps compared to standalone ones though. This seems corroborated by online role-play gaming advice/best practices (i.e. using Discord's standalone app for audio and video over those offered by virtual tabletops which use the web browser). I'll continue to use Meet unless it becomes problematic. It's nice to know Zoom's Chrome plugin for one-stop scheduling is there as a safety net.

Thanks Steve, helpful comparison. As a therapist doing telehealth, my understanding is Meet IS HIPAA compliant re: security, and Zoom is not, UNLESS you purchase a very expensive HIPPA-compliant version ($200+/mo). I did quite a bit of research on this. So at least in this way, Meet wins.

An additional difference between the two programs from my perspective but, not a perspective that affects everyone, is the issue of having A Business Associate Agreement from the companies. While HIPPA regulations are currently relaxed due to Covid-19, once we return to "normal" (whatever that will be) environs, the BAA will again be relevant for those of us providing telehealth services. In researching Zoom vs. Google Meet, I was informed by the Zoom salesperson that the cost of a BAA for Zoom was $200.00 a month! That is a ridiculous charge. G Suite, on the other hand, appears to have been free AND covers the full suite of Google options. I have subscriptions to both programs at the moment as I experiment for the long term view. It will be interesting to see if Zoom comes into a competitive stance on their BAA with Google Meet and Microsoft Teams getting into the video conferencing services. I tried to get information on Microsoft's BAA costs but could never find any information other than the agreement exists. Just couldn't find how to get it or what it costs. On a related note, the Zoom sales person, at the time, told me that Zoom was encrypted end-to-end, which we now know wasn't true. Hopefully, that is being addressed. My experience of Zoom from the functionality point of view is that it is a superior program in video and audio quality.

Great overview Steve. As always, thanks for calling it the way you see it. For the basic user, Google Meet is very simple and browser-based and currently doesn't have the 40-min time limit that Zoom puts on free users. I understand this Fall Google may move to a 60-min limit which is still very usable for most meetings. For paying enterprises and non-profits, Google does provide support, but I see your point on non-existent support for free users just like Zoom. The closed captions are nice and might be especially useful for better including a hearing-impaired user into the meeting.

I agree with lots of your observations. One thing you missed is Zoom's 40 minutes limit for meetings of 3 or more on the Basic account. I was allowed to exceed that twice, without asking, before being asked to subscribe at $USD 150 per year. Being retired and using this for family get togethers across continents, that's an expensive option. Now using Google Meet. One issue with the closed captioning. Using it with most people talking English and others Spanish is interesting. There seemed to be some translation (only used this once) but that looked like it was a bit hit and miss.

We have had a couple of very poor Zoom meetings with audio and video breakup so we moved our organisation to Meet (as we are GSuite users) and I have now used Meet personally as well. I have used Hangouts for years and, although video freezes occasionally, audio always holds up which is more important. I have seen other professional reviews which suggest Google, with all its experience, may just have a better codec than Zoom. I run meetings in both Zoom and Meet. Meet is better, in my opinion, for our organisation and a smaller number of external participants but I have observed the same microphone and camera connection problems with some external participants as you describe - and thank you for pointing out to resolve them in Settings. Zoom is a 'safer bet' with wider groups. On security and privacy, you are of course correct that Big G will no doubt make use of anything it can find but I like to think this will be in a known and ethical way (naive me) whereas Zoom has had some really nasty security and privacy failures from passing information to FaceBook, Chinese servers and an alleged vulnerability in its app. It seems to have fixed all these (especially with the much vaunted V5 of its app) but its record is patchy. Meet obviously integrates better with the Google environment and I am happy to share my calendar and contacts with Meet but not with Zoom. On recording and broadcasting (we need to be able to livestream some of our meetings), Meet only live streams directly to members of your organisation which is a major limitation though probably for some security reason, I guess. Zoom will allow live streaming but warns that this will stop. In any case, the easiest way is to use a separate product, such as OBS Studio, to live stream and/or record the meeting to KZbin or FaceBook and that works well. Incidentally, GSuite (paid) support for Meet is OK - it solved our live streaming issue for example.
@RondaBernstein
@RondaBernstein 4 жыл бұрын
Meet (for GSuite) livestreams to anyone with the link but it is view only, participation/q&a has to be via other methods like social media or texts. Same with meetings. External participants just have to be admitted to the meeting by someone in the organization, even if they have the link. If you need me to explain more, just reply.

There are plenty of people here that think you can't have breakout rooms in Google meet though I can assure you that you can. I use them regularly and effectively and because of the interest that has been shown on this channel I have decided to put together a short video to help other teachers. The average class takes about 2 to 3 minutes to set up for between 4 to 6 breakouts and you can reuse the breakouts for consecutive classes. Students can go in and out at the discretion of the teacher. I didn't do this before because the teachers in our school chat to each other about things like this and that's how things get done. For this situation, a video is called for.

Great video as always! You said Meet runs in a browser but Zoom makes you download an app - but on a desktop PC you can run Zoom in a browser if you wish. I'd love to see you do a comparison of Teams and Zoom, too!

I'd love to see a test of music/video sharing in Zoom and in MEET. I'm a music teacher, and I have been using MEET through a Gsuite provided by my school division. I've noticed that often video and recordings (audio only) skip in a video call. I know that this was considered normal up until the schools closed. I think now I've noticed an increase in quality in the video call.
@donutz1
@donutz1 4 жыл бұрын
Typically the audio and video quality will be coming from your own internet connection, the video settings within the app, and the device you are using the application on. for example if your using the app on a Wireless i-pad or laptop, the quality won't be as good if you were to use a hardwired ethernet connected device, like a home computer connected to your router via ethernet cable. The other setting to check (as Steve covered in this video) is the HD video setting. If you have HD on, switch it to the lower resolution option. This alone should clear up most buffering / skip issues. If not, use a hardwired device when using meet, or any other video platform for that matter, including Netflix!

Thanks! (Just came across your video by chance..... my first time here). LOVE your presentation style. Intelligent, cheery (someone said!), direct, straight-to-the-point (apart from the repeated menu at the start), articulate. The technical quality on KZbin (viewing on iPad Pro 1st generation) is super! (Might be nice to know what equipment you use to make the video). SUBSCRIBED.

A biggie for me is that I cannot mute every participant automatically. While I realize it's designed more for meetings versus webinars, that feature is very important to control the efficiency of a meeting in which one person will present. Yes, Zoom has more features, but I'm a Google fan and love the scheduling integration and browser-based use, but I would not do any demos or presentations on Meet until that feature is added. Thanks for the review, though. I didn't know about the CC, which I agree is cool, and agree is scary. :-)

I’m completely on board with you Matthew I do not understand why they do not include mute upon entry and push to talk as a basic feature within Google meet, it is an enormous oversight

The stupidity is that it has suddenly been forced into gmail. Personal users can not remove or turn-it off. Don't use zoom and meet is now obnoxious - at least zoom doesn't take screen real estate. If questions posted to support asking how to turn-off, very shortly they lock the questions. The response to how to disable or turn-off is turn-off chat, that doesn't have anything to do with MEET

I use regularly Microsoft Teams, Google Meet; and Zoom. Meet is basic but it does the job as you say, the caption is a very big plus. Zoom does with large companies have security issues, see the FTC recent decision. This makes it difficult to use Zoom with large organizations.

One thing I see missing is the Voting / Signaling options, Raise hand, yes/no... Many of my groups use them in the meetings. And Mute/Unmute All is even popular. When you have groups of 50 plus, things can get unruly quickly. Sounds like Meet isn't quite there yet.

I provide telehealth services I was interested in security and confidentiality as well. Apparently Meet is HIPAA compliant and provides a Business Associates Agreement, but only with GSuite subscribers who have configured the BAA agreement; so that’s another consideration in comparing with Zoom that rcharges $200 for the BAA.

I've been using Meet for several years for work because I'm a Gsuiter and you can record if you're on Gsuite, so maybe that's a "premium" feature. Support on Gsuite is great too. From a quality pov, my internet is so bad that there's no quality difference! lol! Data wise I don't think it matters who you trust or don't; they're all buying and selling our data anyway. Just because you're not using any Google products doesn't mean Google doesn't have all your data. Same with Facebook.

Awesome review. Instant subscribe. Re privacy and features, is more available with paid/subscription version? GMeet looks just right, and certainly better integrated, for the vast majority of biz/non-biz users. Smart move IMHO to exclude recording on free version, feature has been overused since WebEx launched. If you really need to record for any reason, go Zoom or paid,as you likely need more features anyway.

OK here goes. I’ve been using Zoom for some time. My concern is since those of us that used Zoom when the security leaks were present may have a hidden file posing future holes providing a back door. I am comfortable with the security fixes Zoom has made, and intend to continue using Zoom. As one person commented “Google ain’t getting Even more data from me.”

As an online ESL teacher, I use these types of apps all the time. Since most of my students have Skype, that has been the one I have used more often. But call quality on Skype abismal. And I have never been able to make a Skype call without losing connection at least once. I have been using both Meet and Zoom for a while now also. Connection and call quality on both is much better than on Skype. To the point where I have just recently told my students to pick either Meet or Zoom, because I will STOP using Skype due to it´s poor quality period. Yes, the features on Meet are fewer than those on Zoom. One thing that Meet is missing is the ability to send a file or pic while in the meeting. Zoom can...even Skype can. Why can´t Meet do that? I find the lack of that feature strange to be honest. But as far as connectivity and call quality. Both Meet and Zoom are much better than Skype. I´m tempted to try out MS Teams now.

First, as a teacher, and secondly, because you teach ESL, I would think that captioning is a feature you might consider essential to your needs. Do you have students who may be hard of hearing? Teaching ESL, do you think it would be beneficial for your students to have captioning and in a perfect world a transcript to refer to?

@@acomkat I do encourage my students to use the CC. It not only helps them better understand what I say to them. It also helps them see what they say and how they say it. And no, I don't have students that are hard of hearing, but it's very useful nonetheless.
