I use my xion for dotwork, 5.5 volts, 3rl tight, hang that needle out & I get some great effects, also like I saw daniels's post of the bishop wand packer I will try that out today since recently I just bought that machine & I will try it out on a blackwork / dotwork tattoo today

I’ve done this technique for years and any rotary I’ve used (used five different for six years) works just fine. Just keep the voltage low. You want a slow machine and preferably a needle grouping of 7 or less (liner) to get this effect. Of course the effect works with any needle. It just varies in how it looks. These days I use a cheap tattoo pen with fancy cartridges and that works very well also. 🥳

I use the Bishop wand packer for this technique with 3RL at 5.4 volt but can also do large scale at 7v... Jason Ramos use a Cheyenne at 10 to 11v to get that effect so you don't need to go that slow.

You’d want a lower voltage than your hand speed so volts would be personal preference. You just want it to hit way slower than your hand speed to get dots and not a line. All an outline is, is just a bunch of dots in a line... if that makes sense.

Yeah the packer is good i use any 4.0 4.2 machine for this i started with the old school Thunder by Cheyenne at 11 volts and the packers made for this it seems.good weight but the shader wand is amazing i use long taper mags like a 15 mag and ive seen David vega kind of cross hatch but very slowly so i did it with this machine and thats how that dude gets it super smooth he cross hatches very slowly and he layers lighter tones very slowly takes alot of fime but its a dope technich with the shader wand

I own almost every dan kubin machine like Ty i cant come across any machine and not buy it. Dan has a machine called the swingliner and its the best machine for 3rl stipple shading at low volts i love this way of shading i also lay some smooth mag work beside it and sometimes on it u gett rich texture this way ive also done portraits of statues this way it makes an awesome effect ill tag u guys on IG but thank u robin i never tried it with my sidewinders im going to asap

@@revanthreva923 i use a 1203 some people use different needles even 3rs 5rl textured needles .extra tight 3rl dont work as well for me as 1203 from kwadron are the best but a good tip i dont think is mentioned and is very important is to use several cartriges i used 8 just yesterday on a realistic rose on the hand all done in 3rl but i changed the cart 8x they have to remain sharp when they get dull they start to traumatize the skin too much and the results arent as smooth i do realism with this and i have to change my cartrige as soon as i feel the needle bounce back i do it like a pendulum whip shade so i know instantly when the needle is dulling on me

The voltage you mention should probably work for getting the machine running if you have a Dan Kubin or other hard hitting machines. Should clear that out. Not suggested to use such low voltages with regular rotary

My current machine, FK Irons Spektra Flux, unfortunately doesn't seem to do very well in the lower speeds, it *can* do stipple, but I feel like it doesn't punch with enough power, so I might need to get a second one.

I stipple with a neotat rotary with no issues .. I find if it ain't punchy enough , you can easily stipple at a higher voltage if your hand movement is quick enough. ✌

Hey Jake, thanks for another great video! I see this style has become very popular recently. However, I wonder about the longevity of tattoos done only using stipple shading? Since each dot becomes a tiny island of pigment, it seems the body will be able to transport the pigments a lot faster than compared to a more solid area of pigments. So over (a fairly short amount of) time, only the outlines will remain. What do you guys think?

Jake it's called black whipshading... Before any professional from back in the day would ever use greywash(alcohol or whatever) because grey wash had no faith inside the community so they shaded like you described to achieve this effect.. Gill montie would be a good example of old style dot work whipshading
