Great stuff. Wollongong yard as it was when I worked there in 1973. B Frame was still intact when this video was shot. A priceless record of the transition from a dumping ground for life expired rolling stock to a modern service.

The days before the ghastly overhead lines were installed. It may have been rough travelling, by today's standards, but it was a lot more fun. Have a look at all the parcels and goods being loaded onto the rail motor. Priceless images. Thanks for uploading.

+fuoco13 When young, I considered a Railway without overhead to be incomplete. Generally it was more fun. One day I will post video of travel between Wollongong and Moss Vale by the normal CPH railmotor service.

Thanks. It’s nearly 40 years since electrification to the Coast started, and that is about the life span of a train, so it’s not surprising that the Us and Vs have gone, Vs just barely hanging on with Blue Mountains runs. You have not said where ‘here’ is - Main South?

Graeme Mellor Melbourne had nothing like the versatile bell codes between guard and driver that NSW has. While they used two bells to start the train, the only other code I heard of was multiple bells for a non-scheduled stop. And with driver-only suburban trains now, nobody to ring any bells.

That is a classic and thank you for uploading it for everyone to be able to view. I had never seen this strange consist except in photos in a couple of books. It is great to see the video. It is also interesting to see the driving trailer without the guards compartment used as the trailing car. I only ever saw then used as trailers and never once saw one used as intended. I understand that the drivers union opposed their introduction and they were all rostered only as trailers. Do you know if they ever saw any limited revenue service as intended? Your video collection is priceless. Thanks

+Richard Smith (Javaricho) Firstly, I was not the cameraman for this video. It was made by a friend, Richard Jones, who worked for the railways all his working life. With regard to those cars, this is what he sent me recently. I believe he would have mentioned if they ever worked as intended. "Sets were numbered K1 - K5. Cars were D4011 - D4015 (first series driving trailers 10 built without full Guards compartment - banned for use by electric Drivers as the only exit was through the passenger compartment) and D4021 - 4025 (75 built with full Driver/Guard compartment). They were marshalled with one of each type coupled. Sets were stabled overnight at Thirroul and Scarborough."

Looks like nsw's version of the sx carriage sets arrangement in brisbane ie towed suburban cars by loco. Where was the generator for each 2 car set located? On the driving trailers with no guards compartment or the ones with the guard compartment? Looks like the dirving trailers with no guards has a grill instead of a window on the diver compartment's side. Cheers.
@tressteleg17 жыл бұрын
+johnbass75 A closer match for the SX carriages is the New South Wales single deck interurban cars classified as U Sets. See my video. The SX cars were designed to be later converted to electrics. As for the double-decker trailers, the use was only for a couple of years until electrification commenced. From memory, the generator was in one of the guards compartments, the guard using the other of each 2 car set. The grille you are talking about is probably where the generator was. These cars later returned to normal service in Sydney.
@johnbass757 жыл бұрын
yep' u sets are the sisters of the brisbane sx sets in design. would have been cool to imagine travelling in such a consist like that (s set driving trailers loco hauled) here in sydney! Looking at some pics on the net shows an exhaust attached to the front of a guard's compartment driving trailer, not the driver only trailers, so maybe the perkins generator was placed in the vacant spot behind the no 2 end bogie where the compressor for the s set motor car is? jm

@Stephen Terrill I remember one day a friend of mine found the electrical sub box to Woonona unlock around 9pm at he switched all the power off lol, lights and everything went out but not the railway signals or anything like that just all the power to the station, also back in those days beyond Dapto was still not electrified yet and they were running diesel sets between Dapto and bombaderry still with the ancient staff key arrangement
