DOUBLE ENDED CROCHET - How to Use Double Ended Hook for Fast and Easy Tunisian Crochet by Naztazia

Learn how to crochet with a double-ended crochet hook in this tutorial video. Hi I'm Donna Wolfe from Naztazia. In this video I show how to do double-ended crochet. There are two main purposes for a double-ended crochet hook. First, you can easily crochet in the round using Tunisian Crochet. Second, you can make a nice Tunisian crochet fabric that has multiple colors and textures. Plus, it doesn't curl! For this sample I'm using a double-sided crochet hook in a size I 5.5 mm and worsted weight yarn. I'm using two colors of yarn, but feel free to use more colors too!

I've seen these hooks before but never knew how they were used. Your explanations were clear and easy to follow. I see some in the round tunisian projects in my future! I have a question about the flat fabric: When do you change colours to achieve the striped effect? Would it be at the point where you used the blue yarn for the second time?

Yes, you can switch to pink instead of blue. Sometimes a self-striping yarn looks good too instead of the plain blue. (Still use a secondary solid color like the light green).

Would it work to use the same technique you used in the round, but doing it flat? It appeals to me to use the shorter hook - I always prefer circular needles when knitting because I find it the shorter needle length easier on the hands. But it is difficult to find double ended crochet hooks with a long cable between unless you buy a whole set which I am not prepared to do yet.

The short answer is yes, it absolutely works with this technique. The longer answer is 1) the work will need to be turned after each row so the look is a bit different than working in the round. Since you knit, it looks a lot more like a modified two-color garter stitch to me. 2) On the last stitch, the placement of the yarn ends are a bit awkward. Whatever you do, as long as it's consistent it should be good. In my case, I have one loop left on my hook with the second color, then I do a chain 1 by bringing the first color back up, turn my work, and proceed with drawing up the next 7 loops (or whatever) with the first color, then taking them off with the second color. The good thing is both yarns are always in the correct place, so the two colors can be worked throughout nicely. Hope this helps!

Is a double hook the same as using the circular hole with the wire?

A "double hook" is a tools with crochet hooks on both ends. Some tools that have a wire in between only have one hook on one end and a stopper or bead on the other end. That will not work with this. However some tools with a wire in between do have a hook on both ends, which absolutely will work with this.

You can work with more than one color with traditional Tunisian hooks too. This particular double-ended hook just has different ways to create different looks.

I've made a good sized scarf on just the hook you see in the video with 45 stitches, by squishing them together a bit. I've also made scarf-sized strips and connected them together into a blanket. I have Tunisian interchangeable hooks and have made double-ended hooks with a longer wire in between for blankets.

Yes, you can. You can get hooks with a long wire in between the two ends to hold hundreds of stitches. Or you can crochet smaller sections and connect them together.

Not really, because the color changes are on the ends, so it's easy to manage the yarn. If the color changes were in the middle, like in graph crochet, that's when I find yarn becomes twisted.

Maybe look closer again at 1:19 in the video. There are clearly 2 loops being removed after every yarn-over. 1 loop is a peach color; 1 loop is a coral color.
