Double High C on a Vincent Bach 1-1/4C?

Just me jabbering about mouthpieces, sounds and people on the internet. I do a little playing and play a Double High C on a large orchestral mouthpiece.

I have an old Bach 1 1/4C that I bought in the early 1970s and had it drilled out to an #18 throat. I can play a Double High C on it, but it’s a lot more work than I want to expend, so my main mouthpiece now, is a stock Bach 1E, which is the best balance I’ve found so far in a mouthpiece (even better than my Schilke 15A4 or Giardinelli 3S, both drilled to #22 throats).

Nice. You have a good sound. I studied with Jerry Callet in 1976. He used a small MP. He got a fat sound with it. My granfather Bunny Berigan used a wide cup. But put a grove. in the bottom so it would not slip. I think it all depends on how think your lips are the shape of your jaw and other things. Clifford Brown used a bach 11. He got a nice sound from it. Good job.

i played double Cs on a 1 1/4 c in college back in the early 80s but i needed a double embouchure to do it and i hated that i had to do that. and back then there were`nt many lead m`pieces out there. arturo, if you notice, has a double embouchure.

Good observation about Arturo - he doesn’t believe it, but it’s quite visible. There was a video of Arturo with Randy Brecker on KZbin during 2020 in which Randy pointed out that is “looks like he goes upstream” in the extreme upper register bit Arturo denies it. Although more lead orientated equipment is much more available it’s a shame that it’s sold as specialist equipment. Maybe this will change with time.

Just picked up a 1.25C and really like it. It’s strange though. I have more of an upper range with it than my 3C. I know every player is different but is there a particular brand you’d recommend for lead playing? My 3C is a giardinelli and gives me a deeper sound than the Bach 1.25c. Maybe 1.25c is actually a slightly shallower cup? Haven’t measured it yet. Thanks!

Yes, as long as you're compressing the air and using your tongue properly, you can play a DHC on a large MPC...to prove that point, Mr. Schilke could do it on his #18 model with a 24 throat and Schmidt backbore BUT....it's NOT going to have the sizzle edge and spin you'll get on a higher compression MPC, and you def' don't want to use that for lead playing or on a rock band as it won't cut through the electronics...

I basically spent 10 minutes taking about playing in a chamber orchestra in this video. Do you think that “the sizzle” would have been appropriate for that? Please take the time to find out more about me before assuming that that you can refute the content of a video you clearly didn’t listen to. FYI: I am a busy professional player who spends most of their time doing the kind of job you describe. I know how to do that too.

It can't be used in a commercial situation with any balls, if you're doing it to prove you CAN "compress" the air, that's one thing but, name me one person that uses a Bach 1 1/4 c playing lead on in a big band or rock band...

Thanks for your response. I suggest you look up a trumpet player called Byron Stripling who played lead trumpet for Count Basie on a Bach 1. Another one is called Jon Ladines. Jon is a busy member of many trumpet-related Facebook groups and a busy professional lead player who does exactly as you argue against. More to the point, please take the time to learn the fact that I hardly ever use a mouthpiece that big and I agree with you!

@@BrassPractice yes-I've hung w Byron...great player and an even nicer guy-actually he played a 1 1/4 (that's what he told me anyway) and then had Scott Laskey (then w Schilke) make a piece for him to help him play more efficiently than the ol' Bach MPC...last time I saw him, he was STILL using the Schilke piece Laskey made for him back in the '80's...he told me the day that MPC was made for him both Faddis and Arturo were at the Schilke shop and they all ordered pizza and had an amazing hang...wish I could've been there that day wow!
