15:15 Here is the context of Naughty Boy! There is a Korean folk tale about a green frog (청개구리 or cheong-gaeguri) that always did the exact opposite of what his mother told him to do. When she was about to die, she knew her son's tendencies and asked to be buried by the river (she was hoping he would do the opposite and bury her in the mountains). But when she died, the son felt so bad about never listening to her that he decided to follow her wishes for once. Since he buried her by the river, her grave gets washed away every time it rains, which is why green frogs cry whenever it rains. It's usually a bad-ish thing to be called a 청개거리 because that's what parents call misbehaving kids, but they fully embrace it and say they won't listen to anyone except the girl they love. In the chorus they also mention building a well. That has do with an old proverb "The frog in the well knows nothing about the sea." It's also a bad thing to be the frog in this scenario because it means you are ignorant and know nothing of the world outside your bubble. But they embrace that too and say that they're alright with the girl they love being their entire world, so they'll build a well that's ocean-deep.

The one thats singing like crazy in Basquiat was Hui! And the opera section in The Game was by Jinho! (Wooseok, the tall member recorded Jinho singing opera sneakily and put it in the final cut without telling him 😭) Fun fact! The songs were all produced by the member. Sha La La: Hui, Wooseok Naughty Boy: Hui, Wooseok, Dawn (The ex member) Dr. BeBe: Hui, Wooseok Basquiat: Hui The Game: Wooseok The other members also composed their songs, some of my favourites by other members are Sparkling Night (Kino), One Shot (Shinwon), Don't (Jinho), Camellia (Yuto), Let's Go (Solo - Yeo One) and Round 1 & Round 2 (By all members!) So Naughty Boy was their first Korean comeback after Shine and after Dawn (then E’Dawn) was forced onto hiatus (soon after he was kicked out of the group) after his relationship with Hyuna came to light. Sonically though there are a lot of similarities between Shine and Naughty Boy because both songs were produced by Flow Blow, Hui, and Dawn. It was a really painful time for Universe and Pentagon, and the fact that Dawn’s sound could be heard all over Naughty Boy even though he was not in the song/mv and his future with the group was unknown made it worse. Basquiat, inspired by artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, was Pentagon’s original song for Road to Kingdom, hence why it is so dramatic and shows off Hui’s powerhouse vocals (Jinho had just enlisted weeks earlier after the group had already started RtK which is why he wasn’t in it). Their live performance of it on RtK is wild.

I am SO HAPPY you got to check Pentagon again, they are one of the most versatile group in k-pop, and the fact that they pretty much write their own stuff? LOVE TO SEE IT! Hui and Jinho are in the top 1% kpop singers and this is not just me saying it, it's the fact that they are both performing and producing with the greatest and participating in many programs, and Jinho even used to be the vocal coach for the trainees in their company (and he's an ex SM trainee...enough said)... Honestly their voices are insane! Despite the poor job by their company they have proved again and again their worth and I hope they will still work together in the future! If you ever decide to deep dive into their stuff I recommend to also check out some of the video from Magazine Ho, where Jinho sings cover or original songs and shows exactly the extent of his insane talent, often along with one or two other members! Thank you again for giving our boys Pentagon some shine!

I always love people giving Pentagon a chance. They are all genuinely so talented and lovely dudes. I'm still holding out hope that you'll revisit A.C.E again at some point for the same reasons (ps: we've got 4 out of 5 back from their military service. Just Baby Chan is left early next year!). As always, I love your videos and your insight and opinions on the music and production side. ❤ I love the song selection also! Dr. Bee has always been on of my favorites. Basquiat also- that was actually their finale song for the last round of Road to Kingdom. As an Atiny- I kind of get the same vibe from Basquiat as I did from the Answer Kingdom performance- both groups saying basically we give ourselves power and strength and don't care what others really have to say about it. The Game was my favorite of their latest album also! I like that you also felt a Queen feel. I can't remember if you've ever seen Jinho's cover of Bohemian Rhapsody- if not, it's definitely something I think you'd like.

The two main vocals are Hui and Jinho. They are phenomenal singers. Hui is a renowned producer and songwriter and he was recently a finalist on Boys Planet. Jinho used to be part of SM and sang a legendary song with SHINEE’s Jonghyun, SUPER JUNIOR’s Kyhuhyun and TRAX’s Jay. Jinho would’ve debuted in EXO but ended up in Cube Entertainment debuting with Pentagon.

Jinho himself already clarified that the rumor about him almost debuting with EXO wasn't true. He was supposed to debut to a new SM boy group before exo was introduced but that group was cancelled so he left SM and eventually joined CUBE.

I know the Double Take for Pentagon will never get as many views as most of the others, but I am SO GLAD you picked them. Like you said, everyone kind of knows of them, but they don't get a lot of support - which is a shame, as they're super talented performers, great songs (mostly self written, often self produced, etc.). You picked great songs too - Sha La La and Basquiat in particular are some of my favourite songs in all of kpop. Basquiat was the one I came across on KZbin back when RTK was finishing up, and immediately fell in love with Hui and the group's music in general. They really didn't stand a chance on RTK, and I always felt like Basquiat, being their final performance for it, was them being angry and lashing out that they didn't need the vindication of Mnet or having the most popularity, they believed in themselves anyway. seeing Caitling react to pentagon made me so happy, I didn’t understand but I was almost shaking from excitement. a literal serotonin rush goes thru me whenever anyone acknowledges and appreciates ptg’s TALENT. they are a one of a kind group, they always gave us something refreshing. kpop will always need groups like ptg. sadly (and thankfully) there’s only one. naughty boy sounds similar to shine because it was their first comeback after shine, which did SO well that they carried the sound over to this track. unfortunately the comeback was released during dawn's forced hiatus and came out two days before dawn was revealed to have left cube (and it was heavily hinted that he had left the group), so that news ended up completely overshadowing the comeback promotions. that combined with the fact that the fandom was in an emotional state led to the song not performing very well, which was a shame because it really is one of their best songs to date. also! the meaning of the song has a TON of korean culture references and wordplay and there is a really good video by dkdktv that explains it all if you're interested! it's truly such a fun and funky song and once you know what the lyrics are saying it really becomes even more endearing

Ok not sure how much familiar you are with Pentagon's history so I will try to explain a bit. The year 2018 was both amazing and heartbreaking for Pentagon. First Shine came out and it got viral so they started getting famous. But then Dawn left and it was a big scandal and the public turned away from them, all while the Naughty Boy comeback was happening. Btw, the MV for it was posted 2 times, the one on 1theK has far more views. But still, it definitely didn't reach the same success as Shine. And as you noticed, it's a song heavy in metaphors, there is a cool video by DKDKTV which explains everything so you can watch it on your own or on stream or something. It was even prised in Korea for it's poetry so to speak. Anyway, after all that happened with Dawn and people dismissing them and calling them "one hit wonders", they decided to have a new beginning. So they released Shalala. And yes, it ABSOLUTELY connects to Shine. Not sure if you remember, but the lyrics in Shine's chorus go "I'm a loser in love with you". But in Shalala they sing something like "I'm not yesterday's loser anymore, today I'm gonna Shine, I'm better now". They wanted to move on and instead of pleasing wider public, they decided to do something different and what fans wanted to see, on their own terms, hence the total change in sound. Because Pentagon makes most of their own music, their lyrics are very personal, you can notice it pretty quickly. That's what Universes love about them❤. Basquiat on the other hand was their final song on Road to Kingdom, and as you saw they were just tired with all the BS from people judging them (and pressure from company to 'success') they just proclaimed they won't give anymore f*cks, they will become artists they want to be defying all norms just like the artist Basquiat did and also become their own kings, regardless if they win the show or not. It was so powerful to see it in the finale. The Game is such an incredible song too, no wonder it gave you Queen vibes, the fandom already dubbed it the "Bohemian Rhapsody" from Pentagon lol.

The desperation you talked about in basquiat is because they did it as the song presented for the final round of Road to Kingdom. They sound like this because they embodied in it all the rage and desperation of them always losing on the second place, never having their rightfull wins. As much as they work (and they really do, believe me) there were always others more famous or more supported. All that linked to the fact that their senior member was enlisting after the show made them tried their hardest just for them to have a real win before a new era began.

I’m glad you got to check out Pentagon again! Everyone should have some good ptg music in their life. I’m glad they had a lot of people vouching for them! Naughty Boy is a fan favorite! It’s such a silly and fun tune. And we have this song to thank for one of my fav ptg clips- their giant inflatable frog dancing in the audience of an award show while the other idols are in awe/hysterics/confused The shock to your system with Dr. Bebe and Basquiat 😂 They’re such aggressive and dark songs and the production and vocals are immaculate. I wasn’t hounding your comment section but I can kinda understand why people were saying these were necessities when stepping into ptg music. The Game is a masterpiece-like a modern bohemian rhapsody to me. The entire mini album it’s from is filled with some of my favorite songs. This song is pretty unique, but imo pentagon has quite a few similarly out-of-the-box, quirky songs (a lot of them are also Wooseok songs) 5 members have been freed from their trash company, and I’m hoping the rest will also leave when their contracts are up. They weren’t really being invested in or releasing much. Now they can at least pursue some interests on their own. We don’t know exactly what’ll happen, but they’re still openly interacting and want to continue making music together. Hoping it all works out I won’t overwhelm you with more suggestions, but know the interest is still there for more Pentagon if you’re ever up for it! Universe is so so grateful for the love and support Pentagon has received. People like you help spread that even more and I appreciate it 💙

Thank you so much for taking a second look at Pentagon. Honestly after your First Look, I knew you would be back, I am just glad it could be now. Shalala means shiny or like the sound that would play in your head when looking at something shiny and new or awesome. Hui was the one who went on the show for Boy's Planet. He's the leader of Pentagon, his being in another group would have been really bad for Pentagon, especially since they have been waiting for him to get out of the military. I am not a fan of Cube, but I am hoping they did it mostly to get attention on Pentagon. Regarding members who left, technically E-Dawn was thrown out of the Company, because he was dating someone from the same company. He goes by Dawn now, and has a new album out, it's amazing, if you have time, even if it's on your own time, please check it out. There have been, however, more members leaving as their 7 year contracts are up: Yeo One, Yan An, Yuto, Kino, and Wooseok. So on their 7 year Anniversary, we are now less 5 more members. But these members have maintained that they will always be Pentagon. I hope they can make some agreement, to continue as a group, much like other groups do, but Cube is a horrible company, so I don't know. Yes, they are actors, their facial expressions and vocals will kill you every time. This cannot be said enough. You are absolutely right, Pentagon, is not unknown in the KPop world, but they are slept on, and it should be illegal because you can clearly see how talented they are. Should you check out more of their stuff, I recommend the following: Runaway Like This Humph! Cosmo With Universe (new song, released for their anniversary) "Have I heard a KPop song bring in Opera fusion?" Super Junior's Burn Up The Floor was in the same vein, but yes, this genre is not often done. They are really amazing and able to pull off a wide range of things, due to their amazing vocals, which is why Universe loves them so much. Again, thank you so much for reacting. I wanna say pentagons story is somewhat tragic, whether it’s the fact that they had everything to succeed to the level of bigbang or bts, or the fact that weren’t being promoted properly by cube. I have so much of the pentagon lore, but at this point in time, everything has passed. Their ability to jump to stardom due to shine, them being much older so the younger audience are immediately not as interested. Looking back, I’m still glad I chose pentagon as the group to always stan, and basically be my ult group. But pentagon are imo one of the more tragic cases of “what if this didn’t happen” I still fondly look back at their songs, and I literally feel what it was like back in high school when I first found them. It’s almost like I can smell the rain in spring when I listen to Shalala. I’m hoping pentagon will release music more regularly as soon as they finish all their military service. I’m glad people still react to them, and fans still ask for people to check them out.

I was following Pentagon since Pentagon Maker, and after that 'dating issue' happened and when I looked at the bigger picture, I blame Cube for debuting Dawn(risky member) in the group and many ppl may not agree with me but I said it. He's dating since pre-debut(not a problem though and even Cube didn't have a problem with that thus allowing the dating), but he has the idgaf personality which backfired and costed the whole group(i can see why he agreed to expose the relationship against Cube's will). Pentagon could have a Brave Girl's effect bcos Shine was a massive hit during that time but all the potential crumbled bcos of that rash decision. And of course ppl won't have the feeling to support the group that Cube failed to protect(as always). Funny that these ppl scream "support Pentagon" everywhere but ppl don't really care actually and that explained why the group struggling until now. And I know why kpoppers dont really interested to support Pentagon or any other Cube groups in general because their future is uncertain. Supporting a group and get invested in kpop require energy, time, financial & emotional investment. You can't just force ppl to stan a group. And just supporting by streaming songs & MVs are not enough to feed a group, let's be real. I'm not ashamed to say that I backed out bcos of the emotional damage I had. There's not a single group that Cube don't fxked up with. They pretty mess up with all their groups bcos the company is super incompetent and it's sad to see the talented groups face the consequences bcos of a weak company. It hurts to see talented artists' future get wasted just bcos they debuted under Cube. The only group that survived+prosper after the 'scandal' situation trying to take them down is Gidle. I pray Pentagon could have that breakthrough too but I guess nahh. I wish all 9 members the best in their own paths and just hope they are happy wherever they are.

Watching Pentagon on RTK made me a bit sad cause they wanted to win so much (they just have not had the wins they deserve, there wasn't even a win for Shine) and I felt they did better after they started to enjoy the moments instead. I felt they wanted to win for Jinho. Watching Hui on Boys Planet also made me sad too. Why there wasn't the love he served? Pentagon has not disbanded but some members did not renew contracts with CUBE recently. I don't know what will happen in the future, but I know that the music will still be good.

I think Pentagon is just an excellent group when it comes to the fun songs tbh. I was cry laughing at your reaction during Dr. Bebe lmao. Same. Hard same. Highly recommend that album in general whenever you get a chance. It was a terrible time to have Hongseok as a bias wrecker lmao (the one who was basically shirtless).

Pentagon is a group I tried to get into a while back. I tried so hard to learn all of them and get into their music. Then I had a funny moment. I've had 'Dr. Bebe' on my playlist for a few years but I had no idea who the artist was back then, so I had a 'holy crap that's them????' moment that cracked me up. I still gotta learn the members tho... oops. The struggles of already stanning like 20 groups.
