Yup, that was the issue. No one in NA was doing the correct thing to counter the Zilean, Bjergsen may be known for playing Zilean in NA, but it was a staple that season in the Chinese server. I remember it was played a few times in the playoffs going to worlds and it got hardcountered then too. NA never did prep properly....

Every single NA fan is just showing off their ignorance in this comment section. Zilean didn't work at worlds not because of "having hands" or anything like that, it's simply the way they picked it, yes in NA no one was even countering the champion correctly but that goes to show the lack of logical thinking and creativity in NA. Every team coming into worlds should definitely been aware of Bjergs Zilean, and know they need to have a counter that doesn't threaten to kill him but controls the wave better than he ever could, that's exactly what BDDs sett was, sett was one of the best picks at being able to have control over the wave at any time. NA to this still doesn't understand why Sett beats Zilean and it goes to show why they'll never even get close to winning worlds. When the fans have a year to think about it and still don't know why Zilean lost at worlds, you can't expect the teams to know either

I feel like in a way LCS players numbers are inflated in NA. Bjerg was a god in LCS and is Zilean was unstoppable but as soon as he played on the international stage 2020 he didn't win a game and got his Zilean embarrassed in the lane by BDD and LGD and they weren't even known for being the best midlane.

As a Zilean player i can say that comes with the champ pick. It's a sleeper OP champ but you lose almost all matchups and play for your team. The super bad AA animation alone will make u lose some cs. It is best suited to pick with a carry jungler. I think Bjergsen not using the roaming potential is where he fucked up. Zilean basically needs no items so you can just push with bombs with no regard for lasthits. Then super quickly join your jungler for an easy dive in sidelanes. Either Bjergsen choked or he didn't understand the most broken thing about Zilean. Which is that he is gamebreaking in how little resources he needs to win the game. EUW soloq player TheDisconnect has basically perfected this playstyle.

I wouldn't say inflated, just unpunished. Na handshake most lanes and play for team fight. It was exploited by lpl whos philosophy is if it move, we kill it. And the macro to force dives that would make .most solo q leave or int jn. Best example would be rakan pick vs draven bot lane. The Chinese bot lanes was farming at tier 2 when tier 1 was up. If it doesnt get to 6 zilian and rankan gets dived with no wave clear is exploited. And if jn comes they die. It becomes a black hole for resource to make the pick variable.

Your autos heal sett practically and your early bombs are easily catchable and it doesn't really matter if you kill the entire lane because you literally can't stop sett from just standing there killing minions. You have no reliable damage in that matchup. The entire lane is just Sett E/W the wave then walking away. Zilean doesn't have the early game damage or pressure to stop that from happening. It's what most top analysts said about the pick and it happened.

Those two offer such gaurenteed control over every single wave, but I think Sett still does it better, and it's easier but what BDD is beyond challenger, beyond pro, it was a kind of wave manipulation I don't expect to see again since it's only possible to win that hard against champions like Zilean. But in years I'd love to see players unlocking all the more there is to unlock in wave manipulation

Jensen played it first I’m almost certain since back in like 2015. Everyone is saying how Jensen copied bjerg when bjerg and TSM where known to copy C9’s strats on multiple occasions including kindred jg. They took the kindred zilean combo only after c9 first started playing it. And to their credit they did it better but to say since tsm did it better that they did it first would just be wrong. @Aden Ben-David Zilean for sure was OP, Rod of Ages was removed for a reason. He could go unpunished into mage matchups. But TSM refused to acknowledge it wasnt something you blind pick into BDD who had been clearly practicing that exact lane, he knew exactly when to crash the waves so Bjerg couldn't get a single minon on each wave. It was a good pick but weak mental already losing everything TSM tried blind picking it and after that no one touched Zilean again, when he is still good into mages like he always was
