The thing that keeps Rain Man out of being demeaning to me is 1) it’s significance in depicting these challenges as something you can’t “cure” and that people should give more care to their needs, 2) it’s based on a real person who also was highly functioning in certain skills like the version in the movie was, 3) Raymond himself is funny, but not demeaned or the butt of the joke in a way that degrades him as a person, and 4) that the movie did make the bold statement that sometimes even if you love a person like that so much, you may not actually be skilled or qualified enough to care for them and you have to put your trust in those who do even if it’s hard to do It also had many other great qualities to it, but unfortunately it seems a lot of those follow-up movies like I Am Sam or Radio just want the cheap schmaltzy payoffs rather than the relatively more nuanced take Rain Man had
@danavixen62742 ай бұрын
Ooh! Well said. 💯 Rain Man had GENUINELY funny moments and Dustin Hoffman's Raymond wasn't the butt of the joke. In fact, when he repeated himself from time to time constantly, it was saddening. It made you realize he had mental issues. But, he wasn't COMPLETELY inept. His memory and his math skills were IMPECCABLE! It would take a patient and very selfless person to care for him. Tom Cruise's Charlie (Raymond's brother) could be self-serving and callous. He grew to love him later on yet his lack of patience would've hindered Raymond from having a decent quality of life. Rain Man is a MASTERPIECE, because it's heartfelt and VERY relatable. I Am Sam is a spoof in contrast to Rain Man. 👀
@JustinZarian2 ай бұрын
@@danavixen6274 indeed. In fact, Rain Man was supposed to have an ending more or less like how we see Charlie decide to let Raymond live with him at his home, but the director and others involved fought to get the ending we got because it was more true to life. It especially makes Charlie a more likable character too because it shows that he’s willing to make a decision that benefits someone other than him for once. Even though he is understandably angry at his dad, he understands Raymond isn’t a tool to get what he wants. He’s a person and a person who needs someone other than him to take care of them. While Dustin Hoffman did do one of his career best performances in the movie, I am a bit sad Tom Cruise wasn’t even nominated when I think about how he kept pace with such a meticulous performance.

Yeah many were just character actors Johnny Knoxville played basically a version of his Jackass persona but in a comedy movie. Its funny as South Park I think might have tried to sue over the rights as they had an episode where Cartman pretends to be special needs to compete in the Special education olympics. Yeah the Ringer also featured a musical group of special needs musicians as well. Its a typical Farrelly brothers type film but does have heart as well. So when I was in high school, one of my teachers had nothing to teach us that day and decided to show us this movie. This movie represents the worst sterotypes of people on the spectrum, and it's insulting. All challenged people aren't just Asberger patients who are functioning. My sons speech is so incoherent that it's now a language that only we understand so if he were portrayed in a movie, should they lie as if we're ashamed of who he is? He also has perfect pitch and is a piano player never having a lesson. Yeah , it's a cliche' . That's because it's a common thing in autistic children.
