This was a comprehensive tutorial...excellent job! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Wish there were more small engine shops like yours around, most don't know how to troubleshoot a problem. That was sure a dull set of blades...never seen them worn to 90º!

You are very good at explaining why and what you are checking, the camera angles are also good, the lighting especially when showing a procedure in a darkened area are difficult to see for a newby. Thanks for taking your time to educate us!

Enjoyed your video, especially the troubleshooting portion. I have a 2008 Craftsman that I had to replace the 19hp engine for $700 installed, so I hope I made the right decision on that. They said that 19HP Briggs Engine was a bad one. I don't know. I thought I changed the oil and filter as required. I got a few good tips from you, thanks for that. You cameraman was on target too. Battery is fully charged (at rest), at 12.75 volts. Stator should be charging at 13.5 to 14.5 volts. Need to check rectifier/voltage regulator, ground, and contact connections. Just about every mower blade I see from customers is sharpened incorrectly. Way to short and steep an angle, with no sharpening on back of blade either.

Good maintenance walk through. You've probably resolved this by now but 2 clues: starter not activating and battery not charging point directly at solenoid. Over charging I would suspect voltage regulator especially if it's an old style mechanical unit. 15 volts will boil the battery. For excessive smoking I would suspect valve and sticking ring issues from sitting off season and today's crappy gas. I add a tablespoon or so of ATF to the crankcase Originally, I added the ATF for remediation on a unit that was problematic with gumming valves. Now I add it to all. I run 10/30 full syn the last 10 or so years.

@@doublewide6 Yea we need it in the middle of leaf season. I was surprised at what the problem was. Kawasaki engines now recommends 20w/50 synthetic blend motor oil for their engines and Briggs recommends 10w/30 blend on there commercial vanguard efi engines with 820cc block or its something like that. We did the same thing just hung around the home yesterday and today. Keep up the great videos

The stator over charging the battery like that is a problem. It will kill the battery over time. Just long enough for the battery to run out of warrantee, most likely.

Hoping you can help me here. Bought a craftsman mower off friend. Ran fine but rough. Brought home, removed the mower deck to install the snow plow attachment. When I removed the deck I thought it easier to remove the blade engagement cable from under the hood where it connects to the engagement arm. The thinking was that it seemed easier that removing the cable and spring where it attaches to the mower deck. Long story short, did full tune-up (oil, spark plug, air filter, replaced fuse - though the old one had no break, etc.) Problem: sit on seat, engage parking brake, turn key.... no click, no sound at all. Brand new battery tested with multi-meter. Haven't tried installing the mower deck back in and installing the engagement cable but going from working to nothing is disturbing. Is the clutch/blade engagement cable have some safety sensor or something that tells the engine not to start if that is not installed. Basically the blade engagement arm is free-floating. I want to reinstall the mower deck and cable to test but just haven't had time to do it yet. Thought your experience might be able to provide me some insight. Thank you!😊

Hey great fix on the solenoid. What model is the Milwaukee impact? My Dewalt works but its too big, would like to get a Milwauikee. That looks like 3/8" drive. Great video. And yea that charging system is high. I look for 14.5, 17 volts could be what caused the battery to need a change. Maybe its a bad regulator. Had one go on my Wheel Horse.

need help please. have 1985 craftsman GT 18 twin. 917.255910. trying to get ammeter to work. i think its called an induction ammeter. took it out of dash and moved magnet behind it and it goes right and left. has 30 amp fuse, its good. wire wraps around back of ammeter, one side goes to fuse the other goes into back of key switch. any ideas on how to diagnose it to check it ? still have book for it. part # for ammeter is 105791X. let me know if you need any further info. fyi--had original engine replaced with I/C 18 hp v-twin. sears did all work under warranty .back in the 80's, around 89' i believe. just went through mower front to back. rebuilt carb. everything works fine now, except ammeter.

@@Savage-lx5yj briggs actually markets some device to increase the amps of the dual. I think it does so by reducing the voltage. Not sure if they call it a regulator. Shown on their alternator page.
