Today, we move a ton of wood pellets, double the hill to the sugar house and move a pallet to the tie sheds. I even split a switch with the 70, just to satisfy all you disaster fans! Something for everyone this week. Enjoy!

Back in the late 80’s, I lived in El Paso to reply to an ad selling used locomotives, rolling stock and turnouts. It was German products and sold for a good price! I had Athern, Rivarossi and Bachmann items… I learned that You need a stout power pack to run the track and accessories. My dad used basic wire buses to power the sections of track and turn outs.. insulated rail joiners, power wire tracks and a good layout made a difference! Kudos to your operation!!! ❤️❤️❤️💎💎💎👍👍👍👍😎

Thanks! I don't really need any box cars. They're hard to load and unload. I don't haul and oil, but I will be hauling maple sap at some point, so tank cars are definitely in the future. Flat cars do almost everything I need and the moment and, unfortunately, my one open hopper fell apart. I have about six new cars waiting to be finished and they'll be flats and open hoppers with ballast gates. I have no use for cabooses. I have a blinking light for the tail coupler. ...and yes, that is a domeless tank car. It's my unfinished weed sprayer car.

Am i dreaming, at 31:39 the front axle of EBT flat seems jammed and not turning ? Don´t rush by the way. If your railroad is a common carrier, you have 2 days to load/unload cars before demurage fees starts. Nice video of a real freight train carrying load.
@MillBrookRailroad
@MillBrookRailroad 2 жыл бұрын
It was moving. Streaming video doesn't always show motion very well. Now, on the hurry to get it done: there are many reasons. Not the least of which would be to get the wooden cars back under cover before it snows or rains again. That's where common carriers have an advantage. They don't have to worry about their rolling stock rotting on a siding.

literally a ton of wood pellets! what is the load limit for the horse shoe curve? No.1 engine pulls well, but you usually leave one or two flat cars behind. with about 800 lbs per car, that is a bunch of weight to move. the first car looked as if it had more on it then the rear flat cars. or was that imagination? how many of the M.O.W. cars do you have? it is great how you use them to do the heavy movement’s over carring the items all the way by hand.

@@Conn653 It's all about the lay of the land and the practicality of the railroad. I have a siding on each end where I can run around the train and with an engine I ride on, it does what a return loop would do without taking up extra real estate. When the railroad is finished, I'll have a turntable on each end to turn locomotives and snow plows.

@MillBrookRailroad
@MillBrookRailroad 2 жыл бұрын
It can be if you're not careful. With a lot of resourcefulness, hard work and studying how a railroad goes together, you can build a railroad for about $7 to $10 per foot. If that sounds like a lot, consider that it is major infrastructure and that it doesn't need to be built all at once. I spent about $1000 a year for the past decade building my railroad. That's still cheaper than buying a tractor or a decent used car these days. That's also using mostly used or pre-owned rail and ties. A lot of the rolling stock was bought used or I built it myself. Only the locomotive and the 105 flat car were bought new. You have to start somewhere.

I rebuilt the 70 a few times, but I am still in the process of building 71. I built the 1001 gondola, which I'm in the process of restoring, and I'm still working on the weed sprayer tank car that spends most of its time in a siding. I built the two garbage skows that we use to carry chicken manure. Locomotive 18 and the 101 and 102 flat cars were built by Plum Cove Studios. The 105 flat was built by Wright Rail Works. The Russell plow was built by Richmond Mountain Railroad. There's more, but it's all in pieces.

The small green flat cars are about 28kg empty, the large black flat car is about 55kg empty and the battery electric locomotive is about 90kg without the driver. 90 more with me sitting on it. It was controlled by an Arduino at one point, using simplified serial and about 30 lines of code, written in C. I had some issues with ground loops and took it out until I could do a better job. Currently, the locomotive is controlled using a 2.4GHz digital surface radio control system. 5V would be too low a voltage to motorize switches, but it's not necessary as they are all spring switches and can be set to direct traffic in each direction.
