el nino results in dual complementary process of weak trade winds and strong equitorial counter currert.. which is why WPP shifts to south america (surface hot water )and it creates low pressure, clouds form...rain occurs... and at australia, situation is reversed... rsulting it high pressure.. all this makes the walker cell to change its polarity and indian branch of S-W monsoon gets no support this time and hence weak or normal monsoon with dry conditions at australia as well.... and not jst in australia, almost all big arid deserts are on the western side of the landmasses...
