This song has been with nearly me all my life. I found it in a music song book when I was 12 in the 80’s, and I learned to play it on the guitar. I think it is one of the most beautiful songs written. The harmony is just breathtaking, the movement from major to minor is breathtaking. And, Doug is Australian!

The song was originally realeased with the title "Leave Love Enough Alone", and it tanked. It was then rereleased in the States (during winter) with the new title of "Winter In America" and it became a hit. A beautiful song by a talented and humble man.

Beautiful Iconic Aussie song, I remember when it was played in 1974. One of those great Oz ballads like Kevin Johnson's Rock and Roll, and Russell Morris's Wings of an Eagle, they take you to another place. We had many fine artists and composers, that most of the World never heard. I believe the song is about Doug thinking of his ex back in Australia in Summer, with her new BF, while he is working in the USA in winter time.....just to clear some confusion for our US people. Great song Peter, thanks for sharing with us.

Winter in NY State (USA) is like death warmed over, to be charitable or mild about it. My girlfriend of 11 years passed away this very month in Upstate NY. Knew this song since 1978, and years later it hit me unbelievably.

Peter, I completely agree. When I first hear this song many years ago I actually thought it was Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues, performing under a pseudonym. Their voices and mastery of the love song being so similar. It should have been a massive hit!

the truth about this song is Doug Ashdown did not write it.....my deceased husband wrote it and sold it to Doug Ashdown...the song was originally called Winter in Australia and it is about where we lived in Queenscliff Victoria...the frangipani was in our front garden....Doug claimed it for his own....he did not write the lyrics but probably modified the melody slightly
@PeterJohnBosse9 жыл бұрын

@ruthrobertson1929 жыл бұрын
he was not a professional song writer....his name was Chris Dyer....he wrote this song about our marriage split...I just think it's not right that Doug Ashdown has gotten all the credit for a song he never wrote...the only words that he changed was "America" because they thought it would do better in USA...which it did...!! whether you want to accept as I say as truth...that's up to you but it's TOTALLY the truth....Chris got a pittance for the song. I think it's a sad thing that everybody believes it was a Doug Ashdown song....I think it was the only hit he had and he didn't even write it!

By the way - does anyone know why, in every copy of the lyrics I've ever found online, the second line of this song is given as "The friendship any opens up to kiss the salty air"? "Friendship any"?? It's FRANGIPANI - as in the flower! I don't know if frangipanis actually do bloom in winter in America, but at least it makes sense... C'mon, is Doug's Aussie accent really that hard to understand?
