Watching Doug "climb" into his Citroen car with the hydraulic suspension was so cool! It brought back memories of a Mercedes car my dad owned back in the late '70's to early '80's. It also had hydraulic suspension on it, but the car body didn't go up and down 5" to 6" the way Doug' s car did.

Thank you for posting this. My all time favorite bassist and his mighty low riding Citron. RIP Doug. I saw him with Santana at the end of 1973. Incredible , unpretentious and what a great groove. I'd only been playing bass for a couple of years and he set my bench mark for how I wanted to play.

There is practically no footage of him on youtube. That's too bad.

Perhaps you already knew Doug played with a vocal group called "The Voices of East Harlem" in the early '70's. But if not, look for KZbin videos of that group playing live, and chances are, you'll see him. But as tall as he was, 6'6" or 6'7", you might have to look closely *behind* the mass of singers in order to see Doug. He never danced or grooved to the music, as if he didn't want to call attention to himself. He was like a tree standing in the backline. Perhaps he was self-conscious of his height; not sure. RIP Doug, you were extremely talented on the bass and had a unique sound. You've been missed ever since leaving Santana in 1974. Rest in Peace, Doug.

Doug appeared to have felt a "quick, sharp pain" right at the 0:04 part of the video. His eyes winced right then, just like people do when they hit their hand on something sharp. Anyone know what might have caused Doug to do that?

I've read somewhere that Doug developed depression and a heroin addiction that started around 1976 or 1977. Does anyone know if the depression triggered his heroin addiction, or was it the other way around?
@shumaremi024 ай бұрын
The heroin addiction started around the time he was recording the Ike White album with Gregg Errico in 1974. Shortly after he left the Santana band. According to Doug’s cousin, Doug struggled with depression for most of his life and turned to drugs later on to cope. I really want to find out what he was up to from 1976 until he passed away in 1979 because he has no recording pass 1976 and no records of him performing live in that 3 year period.

Tom Coster stated that something happened to Doug in his childhood that troubled him but, Tom Coster didn’t state exactly what it was and I’m dying to find out

What concert is this from? I heard Santana (can tell by one note) playing the licks / theme from Billy Cobham's Stratus at the end. Never heard or seen this in all these decades.

This is from Santana's South American tour from October of 1973.

Jimdep is right. Few months ago all the documentary was available on the Santana KZbin channel but i don't see it anymore.

@@jimdep6542 My brother, 66, and I 70 have been to MANY concerts/live music events since we were both priviledged to see this master musician perform just the once, in London, with Santana on 15th Nov 1973. This concert remains our no1 performance by ANY act, large or small, and for me Doug the most memorable bassist over my concert-going. I have seen a very short clip somewhere on YT of Doug in David Bowie's band, from a gig in London again I believe, but there seems to be a distinct lack of any kind of footage anywhere for his, which for me makes his passing even more sad, 😭😭

@@forearthbelow I agree with you 100%, especially about Doug. I saw Santana on Dec 31st of 1973 at Winterland in San Francisco which I'm pretty sure was the last show that Doug, Richard Kermode, and Leon Thomas did with Santana. That's been my all time favorite concert too. I haven't seen any video at all of Doug playing with Santana and McLaughlin on their 1973 tour. It's a shame.

@@jimdep6542 Hey Jim, I'm not sure if I misunderstood your penultimate sentence above but I have from YT this clip which to my ears is the ESOTW performance from Lotus from Japan 1973 which Doug, like Chepito, is very sparsely covered. kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3OonX-IrLl7q5o The show I was at remains my no1 - but is also my biggest regret. It was the bands 2nd night, they did 2 shows a night and I was at the 1st show 2nd night. We were so stunned at how brilliant they were that we refused the opportunity to buy tickets for the 2nd show and, I assure you, they played their hearts out for that 1st show that they virtually crawled off of the stage. The standout performers were Doug, Richard, Shrieve, Chepito [I have long maintained HE was the beating heart and soul of the band] and Carlos of course: his sound and tone that night on his Gibson was imho the pinnacle of ANY of the playing [[I have lost count at 36 the number of times I have seen this exceptional group starting in 1970, all in the UK]]. I think I may have more clips from that time, I'll have a search and post more if I am successful in finding any more out there. All the best, dear friend, kindest regards, Tony 👍👍
