Excellent talk. This is what you hope from a webinar - I *thought* I knew about oaks - I learned a ton. This guy knows his stuff. Learned about cicadas, gall wasps, growth rates, oak myths, and biodiversity. Thanks Columbia Land Trust and Doug Tallamy!

Per the one question towards the end, I think if you did some research on west coast development and preservation rules, you might find that in many places Garry oaks specifically are protected, and so you will often see oaks and possibly other trees being protected from the development work. How effective it is for long term tree survival, would be a question for the inspectors who are supposed to monitor the biological impacts. But there are rules.

With a new mortgage has come several Oregon White Oaks, Quercus garry, I'm told. Lot size is about 100 x 100'; location SW Washington, Clark County. This is in a development with an HOA. Most of the lawn is gone and I'm about to remove most of what is left. Wish me luck with the HOA. Thank you so much for this talk.

This was a great presentation! I live in South Spokane County (Zone 6) where we don’t have any native oaks, but I would like to plant a couple on my property. I have read conflicting information on what zones the Oregon White Oak will grow ranging from zones 4-7. We live in an area prone to drought which the Oregon white oak seems to tolerate. Would this be a good addition to my property (along with plenty of true natives), or should I go with a Northern Red Oak that I know can tolerate temps below zone 6?

Could you graft a desirable native oak, that is naturally very large and takes many years to make acorns, onto another oak's rootstock that is smaller, to control the size? Would it fruit sooner? There is a dwarf variety of Quercus garryana endemic to the Siskyou Mountains (var breweri).
