For those wondering why you’d need to jump an electric vehicle: The electronics are still low voltage and often shared with the gas vehicles. But in particular the relays for an EV main locomotive battery and the key fob stuff are controlled by 12V computers. All the classic electronics like the stereo, power windows, screens, etc are usually the same 12V stuff the auto industry knows how to work with. So if the 12V battery is dead, then it can’t run the safety checks to engage and connect the big main battery to start or charge the vehicle. There’s no more starter motor and you don’t need all the cold cranking amps anymore but you still need enough to engage the high voltage circuitry. The 12V battery will be kept charged by the high voltage system where possible. This is also good for maintenance as the high power stuff is only in limited locations and it isn’t like 400V or whatever is running everywhere to kaboom in an accident.

The Ford Lightning is better than any other truck in the world. I mean, nobody can argue otherwise. There is nothing that comes close to this for the price, not even a diesel or gas truck. With 572 horsepower on tap, and 900 ft lbs of torque, and no transmission to burn up, it makes more sense to use this truck for work, as compared to an extremely unreliable diesel. Diesel trucks last a long time, but sometimes they break, and when their engine breaks they cost $8,000 to repair. Diesels do break down, sometimes they blow head gaskets, or the transmission can burn up. The electric truck just has less moving parts to break or wear out, and they have a ridiculous 8 year drivetrain warranty!

@benruss41302 жыл бұрын
Engineer here, you noticed that the ride of the suspension feels different, and I can tell you why. The TLDR is that the lightning both weighs more *and* has less lift capacity. The Lightning is configured to lift 2,000 lbs and weighs 6500+ pounds while a typical equvalent would be configured to lift 3,200 pounds and weighs around 55-5700 pounds. This makes the relative acceptable weight range of a regular F-150 around 50-60% of the vehicles weight while the Lightnings range is only 30% of its weight. This means that Ford can equip the Lightning with suspensions that are closer to their capacities, which means that they will be less stiff (and therefore less jarring) to deflection. Combined this with a lower center of mass (which reduces body roll and a few other factors) and tada, the best handling F-150 on the market. To counter this, the first 500-1,000 pounds you load a regular F-150 with will typically improve its ride quality.

Whenever "gas" equivalency becomes the breaking value proposition then you know you're not ready for the entirely new world of EV transportation. Here's the truth, an EV platform can do things that an ICE platform cannot, and never will be able to fuel savings aside. Tesla figured out early on that there goal wasn't to merely provide an EV version of the standard 4 door sedan because there would forever be the Volkswagen TDI crowd saying "but I get 50 mpg and its $25K cheaper than the model S". When a Tesla test drive includes a demonstration of the key fob alone bringing the car out of the parking stall/garage with know one inside, or Summon mode where the car finds you in the parking lot, or pre heating the cabin in your garage, or over the air software updates, you know its not about fuel savings, its about a whole new technology platform. Personally, my BMW i3 does none of the Tesla stuff, it just saves me nearly $400 a month in gas, while breaking a life long ridiculous addiction to gasoline, that's all it does. Ford is doing as little as possible to impress people at this point, they know their consumer base well.

I have learned recently that among non enthusiasts, people really don't understand what goes into the price of a car. I had to explain in detail why the compass trailhawk is different than the Grand Cherokee Trailhawk and it hit me that marketing works so well that people really just don't understand what a platform is. The lightning has totally nailed it by the looks of things but as you say, there is just no way to compare it to a product which is double the price and aiming at a totally different market.

I am a Ford Expedition owner, and owned a F-150 before that. I haven't been too eager to get an EV, at least not in the near future, but Ford has hit a HR with this truck. They did the smart thing by making an EV truck based on their current truck, that people can actually use with many added benefits. The "frunk" alone was the answer to every pickup owners' prayers, giving a sizeable & lockable storage space. Good on them for offering this EV across several price points, and not just making it a $100k+ rich person's toy. Only thing Doug really didn't address was the range. In our house, the truck is the vehicle that we use for all of our family road trips, and we do some longer drives over 6 hours. If this truck can't handle that trip, that is a big negative that would keep me from buying one. Don't want to have to stop for a half hour or hour long recharge, and I definitely don't want to have to do it more than once. If Ford can solve the range problem or figure how to speed up the charging process, I'll be looking to buy one in a couple of years.
