"Auto metal" refers to the ability to automatically adjust to the metal style tape reading. And I'm quite sure Mitsubishi knew what it meant. There are different types of cassette tapes and some cassette tape players would automatically adjust for the different types.

This is an example of the biggest problem I have with Doug. Lazy research. Whenever he encounters something in a car that he doesn't understand, he makes something up rather than find out the actual answer. It is a disservice to his audience as he feeds them false information. For example, in his 2020 Subaru Outback review, he pointed out the subaru logo shaped automatic approach lights in the side mirrors and said they have no purpose other than to look cool and show off the logo. That was just patently false. He literally did the review at a Subaru dealership and could have asked someone and they would have told him that they're lights that automatically turn on when you approach the car to illuminate the door handle and area around the front door, but instead he just invented something and played it off as fact. He does this way too much for my taste.

Auto metal on the tape deck means the tape deck was supposed to automatically detect the formulation of the tape (chrome, metal, etc...) and adjust the deck accordingly because different tape formulations require different playback equalization.

Despite is being almost 4000lbs, it handles really well. The 4 wheel steering really works around turns, and there is no body roll, since it is a low car. It prolly handles better than a Supra, and since it has awd, it is quicker than a STOCK Supra.

These ran extremely impressive numbers stock. I had a stock 1997 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4 and a stock 1991 Nissan 300ZX Twin-Turbo (5 speed manual) at the same time the VR-4 was much faster in a straight line, from a dead stop to 150ish speedo indicated the VR-4 had the Z easily beat by a couple car lengths or so depending on the launch. At the quarter mile the Mitsubishi will run with an older Audi S5 or C5 Vette, I ran a 13.51@102.47mph my first time out. After learning how to drive it I actually ran pretty consistent 13.3-13.4@102-104mph. In comparison my 300ZX Twin-Turbo ran 13.8-14.0@101-103mph.

The 3000 is more of what i would call a awesome touring car ! These are actually made for what i would call top speed driving and superb handling. The only time i rode in one my buddy and i did some high speed stuff in the Az desert and that car was amazing and felt so absolutely stable. I have never got to ride or drive a 300zx yet although it is my dream car.

You forgot to mention the active aerodynamics and the heated side mirrors. I've owned 2 VR-4's, they're definitely a nightmare mechanically because the enginebay is so compact and hard to work with. A timing belt job is like a 12hr affair. But the engine can handle power and a simple downpipe exhaust upgrade and an external boost control turns that engine into 375hp easy. Want more? The stock b9 turbos are the size of hairdryers. 15g turbos and larger fuel injectors and pump and you're looking at 550hp all day. I worked at a performance shop that specialized in these cars, they have potential.

It's also worth noting that the 4 wheel steering changes dependent on speed. At low speed the rears turn opposite of the front, high speed they copy the front causing a strafe.

Not on this car, this car's AWS only operates in phase with the front at speed. There are some vehicles that do have opposite phase AWS at low speed, but this isn't one of them. And he didn't mention the AA, but he is reviewing a 99 which doesn't have it, in reality he should have reviewed an earlier year vr4, as they lost features through their years of production. They also had electronically controlled suspension and active exhaust, as well as the aforementioned AA, in earlier years, earlier HVAC units had more detailed screens with blue indicating cold and the arrows were animated in direction of flow, and it wasn't just HVAC either, it was actual climate control, which I don't think Doug mentioned.

He doesn't factor in things like age of the vehicle and how it compared to competition at the time, the Dougscore compares every vehicle to each other head-to-head, so considering that the VR4 got a 6/10 compared to all of the modern cars he's reviewed is actually a really good rating for a 20 y/o vehicle.

@@KevinVagen Damn that's a hell of a story! Was it a twin turbo model? I had a 96 VR4, they're fast in a straight line but not great in tight corners and apexes. I ran a 13.47@103.89 stock (drop in filter if you count that) - I had a 1991 Nissan 300ZX TT some years ago, and ran a best of 13.81@103.81mph. You can feel the difference between the acceleration in the VR4 and Z, the Mitsu just gets to high speeds faster. From a roll on the highway the Z can hang for a bit, but from a dig/low speed roll it's over. I miss both of those damn cars 🙄

The WRX is such a great platform. Fast but plenty of utility especially with the wagon which is imo the coolest one. I have a thing for wagons. Yours is the bug eye gen if I'm correct, which is my favorite era of WRX. Something about the styling and the way they pull. I test done a 2017 WRX STI sedan and it didn't feel as quick as the bug eye gens despite putting down faster numbers. Hold onto that car, those are hard to find!

Hate to say it but you got pretty lucky. Amazing cars, and I miss mine, but reliability was NEVER a strong suit for the 3000gt. AWS issues, oil pickup issues, bearing issues, leaks, etc. A quick search online will detail just how bad they can get. Not to mention the placement of some parts was just absolutely atrocious, and made working on them a nightmare.

_"AUTO METAL"_ This means the cassette deck can automatically select the proper tape bias setting to optimally play metal formulation cassette tapes. How that works is simple: metal bias cassettes have a pair of holes close to the center of the spine and hi-bias cassettes have a pair of holes located next to the pair of record protection tabs. There are switches over those holes in an auto-bias sensing cassette deck.

There were benefits, particularly a higher frequency response, with hi-bias (CrO2, Chrome) and metal bias tapes. However, those benefits were only realized when you used them in decks that could work with them and if you were playing them back in a good hi-fi system. They were also more expensive than normal bias tapes, especially metal bias tape. And Memorex was fairly lousy stuff, especially compared to Maxell and TDK.

The "Metal" on the radio/cassette was saying it could handle Chromium Dioxide cassette tapes which required a much harder head because the metal chromium would scratch a normal head for iron oxide tapes. Chromium Dioxide tapes had much better frequency range.

I think that's not exactly true. You're talking about "chrome" tapes which are also known as type II, but "metal" tapes are type IV. Type I and type II tapes can be played without any special setting but type IV tapes require a user to change playback/record setting of player to metal tape. This player apparently did it automatically by recognizing a type of an inserted tape.

I've never heard about special tape heads for chrome tapes but that's not even relevant. Because the label "auto metal" is about type IV cassette not about type II which is what you're describing. As I said before: Type II = Chrome = what you're describing Type IV = Metal = type of tape which needs a special setting of a player to be played (a switch or a button typically labeled "metal") The label on this player says "auto metal" not "auto chrome", therefor it's about type IV tapes and not type II as you said.

FM Diversity means the car has two antennas, for better reception. There's the stalk, and an antenna in the windshield. The radio switches to the antenna that has the best reception. Metal was for metal-oxide tapes, which required different tape bias.

I bought a 1994 while working in Saudi Arabia. Had the car just over a year when I took a vacation to Japan and took a tour of the Mitsu plant. Talked to the Rallye Art (the racing division of Mitsu) people about the VR4 and what plans they had to race the 3000. They said they had developed an engine and tranny for it but the upper echelon had decided against "factory" racing but would "help" individuals who wanted to race. My "guide" took me into a room where they had 4 3000's in their factory racing colors that they were going to dismantle. I asked if they would consider selling one to me but the answer was a resounding NO". Then the guide made an intercom call with someone and told me they had 12 engine/tranny combos that were to be used for spares and that they would consider selling those for a price that was as much as what I paid for the car. When I learned the engines produced 980 BHP and the tranny was an 8 speed, I didn't think twice and bought one with the condition that they send a Rallye Art mechanic to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia to install the engine/tranny. I paid for all shipping and hotel accommodations and two weeks later I had the ONLY Rallye Art 3000GT VR4 in the world that was not at the factory collecting dust. The car was very capable of speeds over 230 mph as I had it over that on several occasions. Unfortunately the car did not accompany me back to the states as a very wealthy Saudi offered me 2.5 times what I had invested in it. It's probably a million dollar car today.

With regards to how it feels when cornering: I always felt that it was way more provocative of going fast than other sports cars, it taunts you to go faster. My dad has one with a full exhaust and intake and the sounds is pretty great. I always found that you had to regard the car as more of a grand tourer than a sports car. As a tuner car it has heaps of potential but as a stock car it is more like fast and comfortable. I love the tan over red colour.

Had one of these back in 1993. Loved that car! Mine had the active aero option, that would adjust the pitch of the wing. My girlfriend at the time loved to press the switch non stop. I finally had to tell her to stop before she broke it. Loved the all wheel steer. Fast and handled awesomely. It was my upgrade from an upgrade. Shelby GLHS to a Dodge Conquest TSI and then the Mitsubishi 3000 GT VR4! How I miss the 80’s and 90’s turbo cars!

Doug, "AUTO METAL" meant that the Tape player automatically recognizes ‘metal’ tapes. Way back then you could purchase ‘metal’ particle or metal treated tapes that had a much more rich sound the caveats were that 1. You needed a tape player that had the ability to play the metal tapes AND 2. You should NEVER use metal playing mode on a standard tape, it would ruin your tapes. So an Auto Metal tape player automatically sensed the tape type, w/o your forgetting to hit the metal mode off to avoid ruining standard tapes. Re: Mitsubishi’s turbo, you didn’t mention that it had a graduated turbo which was actually very cool. Normal turbos kicked in at about 5,000 rpm as you mentioned and gave you a kick in the bum to redline. Mitsubishi’s turbo kicked in partially early on, then ramped up as you increased RPM’s, giving you more thrust at lower rev’s, earlier, without lagging the engine and did so much more smoothly. All Wheel Steering, You mentioned this, but didn’t mention that at low speeds it turned AGAINST or opposite the front to decrease your turning radius. At high speeds the rear turned WITH the front (8°) to keep your vehicles track straighter. For example as you swerved around a slower moving car, quickly changing lanes, you kind of went sideways greatly reducing normal vehicles tendency to fishtail. You mentioned riding on rails as you cornered Not sure if that one had the original tires, but if so, or they bought the same, they were $2,000 to replace and were unique. The sides were like an upside down V. For ex: rim at top, pavement at bottom a normal tire looks like this; (___). The 3000 GT VR4’s looked like this; /____\, putting more rubber on the pavement. You also might note the 3000GT VR4 has one of the most interestingly worded warnings then a recall ever. It roughly went like this: "Warning! Potential for transmission failure. When the vehicle is being pushed to it’s designed limits, when it is being exercised to its maximum potential, during periods of extremely high stress and speeds, the transmission may seize." Think about that. You’re going down your favorite twisting mountain road, engine screaming, shifting it’s AWD 320 HP twin turbocharged engine and transmission wildly, taking the corners at high speed, breaking into the curves, accelerating out of the curves, engine screaming... and the transmission locks up. All 4 wheels lock as your transmission seizes. Not making this shit up. 😳

Steve J. - Well... yeah... maybe? You needed to record on a ‘metal’ capable deck, use a ‘metal’ tape, and play back on a player with the metal capable player. It was true that if you recorded or played back a metal tape on a deck that did not support it... your results sucked. However, from what I remember the sound was richer sounding. I used to record my ‘albums’ to tape to play in my Mitsubishi Diamanté which also had the "auto metal" words on it. It seemed to (me) enhance the base as well as the treble. I liked the difference, but I’ve never been much of an audiophile. 🤓

Claudio Il Texano - Unfortunately, you are mistaken. Correct that the later spiders and the standard two of the three lower levels of the 3000 GT’s did NOT have four wheel steering. However, the VR4 had twin turbos and DID have four wheel steering that would turn like 6° or whatever against the the turning direction at slower speeds, and at 50+ with the steering direction. It was a selling point that I clearly remember. I may be wrong about this year model because the trunk air deflector on this 1999 was stationary. The model I looked at the air deflector moved automatically up and angled to add a little downward air pressure for stability. Motor trend magazine did a test that showed the rear air deflector actually decreased the air speed. I ended up buying a 2001 Galant VR4, because the insurance for a 3000 GT VR4 was like 2000 something every six months. The 3000 got also had a skateboard like ride IMHO. Anyway, YES. The top of the line model DID indeed have 4 wheel steering. LOL! 😎

Had a vr4 while in the service, I'll never forget the feeling of those turbos kicking in on a country road along the coast. The car was like a horse, meant to run fast and felt like riding on air when you got there. Front and rear spoilers kicking in around 70mph, touch button suspension (tour, sport mode), amazing vehicle. Had a Cobra and S60R too, each had their perks. The NA 32v v8 with IRS loved high revs on twisty roads, the occasional power glide through an intersection was fun, beat a similar year STI at 162mph on Highway 16 near tacoma, he was pissed cause I caught him from behind. The S60R just brutally destroyed nearly everything stock in its power band, the VR4 had a smooth, powerful acceleration while the S60R made you grab the wheel with both hands. Loved each of those cars, also had an old 92 Honda Accord EX that came with its own comfortable perks, looked nice, never gave complaints getting to 140mph interstate driving. Take a chance on these old cars, you'll appreciate what you get and how balanced they were for their time. New cars may have power but they don't have that something special these older cars did.

I agree man, great observations. But I cant believe a 92 Accord would get to 140! Thats amazing. My 2013 V6 EX-L Accord Coupe cuts power at 125, but you can tell it would make it to 150 at least. Its still pulling pretty good at 125. There's a video on YT of my exact car with the limiter removed and just a minor ECU tune (KTuner) doing over 160. Those Hondas are fun and Ive always loved the clean look of the 90-93 Accords and Legends. Remind me of the 01 era 740i. Another great looking sedan. Among the best looking IMHO. I never got to drive a 3000GT but I remember in high school (99-03) someone had one and had it all modded and nitrous etc and would do 4 wheel powerslide burnouts in the parking lot, etc, he claimed it was a sub 11 second quarter mile but I dunno about all that lol. @@MattH-wg7ou No shit, the 92 accord ex I had was clean, well maintained, got to 140mph, it sounded nice at higher rpms getting there but the suspension couldn't handle the constant high speed so I'd hit the 140 then back off. No sustained runs at 140, took a few seconds to get there but definitely did it. The accord was quiet inside but at 140 you could hear the wind resistence against the aerodynamics (milk carton). I was surprised.

My 91 stealth tt was my favorite car to this day. I had one of the "official pace car" models, along with being a wonderful touring car, it had questions asked about it everywhere I went. I loved the older people that would basically run up to me and ask me about it. Mine had 32k when I got it and I sold it with 68k. I'll have another someday, low cost of ownership compared to the feeling you get driving one. Thanks for reviewing this car Doug but the earlier generations had many more quirks, mine even had suspension and exhaust switches from normal modes to "race" modes. The first gen had all the goodies Mitsubishi could throw into a vehicle! So much fun.

Couple of things. This car was known, even at the time, as a 3.0 liter grand tourer hence the name 3000GT.Big. Fast. Comfortable. It didn't have the pure sports car feel of an RX-7 but when it came to comfort, road noise and soft touch materials it blew away the likes of the Supra and 300ZX at the time. The added weight was always going to be a problem but it was a grand tourer anyway. Also, up until 1996 the 3000GT was known as the car for big guys. When they ditched the mechanical sunroof for an electrical unit in '97, the cabin lost some headroom and that is the reason your head kept hitting the headliner. Back in the day I remember the guys over 6 feet who had turbo's all say it was the only one they could fit in. These cars had a transverse mounted V6 which made it a bitch to work on and didn't help the exhaust not any. The Supra and Skyline were the inlines 6's which make for better sounding motors by and large due to their natural balance. At highway speeds against other cars with the same power level, the 3000GT had its work cut out for it to overcome the extra weight and drivetrain loss of the four wheel drive. But from light to light, all of that weight and 4wd made this thing untouchable. With the tach pegged at 4.5K and a fast clutch slip, the rear end would squat super hard and dig in deep. Roll racing, it could hold its own but from a standstill, they only ways you were losing was if you bogged on the launch.

FM diversity is essentially stating that the radio uses a series of antennae to achieve the best possible signal. The car has not only the power mast antenna, but a smaller antenna integrated into the rear glass. The head unit can then decide which antenna is best to be used on the fly. Underneath the 3000s exterior sheet-metal....are the backbones of a Galant Sedan FWD Platform....which many Mitsubishi vehicles from that era were based on. Much like the 80's and early 90's Camaros, the dashboards were only available in black no matter what the other interior colour options were. This was due to the large size dash being located directly under a large, raked back windshield. Engineers found that any colour other than black caused a tremendous reflection of the dash in the windshield on sunny days. This was a safety issue as not only was this annoying, but it proved difficult to see the road as well.

Doug you have no idea how long I've been waiting for this review! I wish you reviewed a first gen though because although the '99 is rarer and more valuable, the first gen has way more quirks and features ;) First gen had active aero, electronic adaptive suspension AND an active exhaust! Also the digital climate controls had a color screen and dual zone control. Also to fix your confusion, FM Diversity means the car uses multiple antennas to get the best signal. There's a second antenna built into the rear windshield. Auto Metal means the cassette player will detect if the inserted cassette is a high-end Type II chrome cassette or even a super high-end Type IV metal cassette. There were a number of head units used in the 3000GT over the years and its actually kind of surprising that the 99 had this "higher-end" feature since cassettes were being phased out stating in the early 90's. P.S. The optional sunroof took about 1.5 inches of headroom away :/ Thanks for another great video Daddy Demuro!

Haha I'm certainly no guru but I've been involved in the community for long enough to know quite a bit! These car's have pretty comprehensive tune-ups every 60k miles which mostly involves things like replacing all the belts, pulley's, the water pump, some gaskets here and there ETC. As long as the 60k service is done and the car is well maintained, there is no reason why they can not be very reliable past 200k. My '93 N/A has 170k and I can bang off the rev-limiter at 7200 RPM all day! The VR4 will of course encounter more problems since it has twin turbos which will wear over time and a lot of electronics that could go bad over time. The VR4 is also a pain to work on because of how packed the engine bay is (N/A's are really not too bad). Biggest common problem I can think of is in the earlier cars the ECU capacitors are prone to leaking as they get older, luckily many people are capable of replacing them. The other problem that some complain of is lifter tick on the VR4 but usually its caused by increased boost and if it does occur it can be fixed. Overall they are pretty reliable cars if they're taken good care of! Most of the banter about unreliability is from loud people who have had unfortunate and uncommon experiences. The VR4 can be a pain to work on but at the end of the day you're driving a 90's legend :)

Dude! Love your videos... But, some of your confusion on this car is hilarious. Let me explain. Since this was sold as a performance car, the black dashboard, various button placement, etc. were all purposeful. Black dash reflects the least amount of light back at the driver for less visual distraction. Steering wheel buttons are placed in the middle for the same reason. During hard driving, the sides of the wheel are free from clutter. Try taking a tan colored dash cluttered up steering wheel Honda accord to the track and that stuff is a serious distraction real quick. Other than that, kudos! Oh, and the worst part of this car was horrible understeer. And even though it was awd it still had transverse engine and front wheel bias. Cheers!

Doug! Thanks for upping the cost for these cars, jesus, after this they'll be worth more, which is a good AND bad thing! I own 3 of these beasts - a bone stock 1997 VR-4, highly modded 1995 VR-4, and a project in process 1991 Dodge Stealth RT/TT. Drag Strip Times - 1997 3000GT VR-4, bone stock - 13.18 @ 104.3mph 1995 3000GT VR-4, modded (DR-750s) - 10.23 @ 134.5mph A stock 2G VR-4 is faster than new cars from 2018 - My stock '97 VR4 has embarrassed many FK8 Type Rs (Sorry Honda guys, please don't flame me), Focus RSs and a couple Golf Rs. This is the most misunderstood car to EVER come out of Japan. Mitsubishi was aiming for the Skyline GT-R series, and in the US we didn't get that car, so it was out of place against the sportier Nissan 300ZX-TT, Toyota Supra TT, and Mazda RX-7 TT. In comparison tests, only its acceleration was noticeable - it was out handled by the others. *It was never meant to compete with them in the first place - there was no car on the market like the 3000GT VR-4 and it would have been better off being compared to the Porsche 928 or BMW 850i* I've owned 3 out of the 4 - I had a 1991 and 1992 300ZX TT and a 1996 Supra TT. I also had a 1992 Acura NSX for a bit. I'm stuck on the 3000GT platform, it's my favorite of all 4 of the cars. There's something special about the 3s platform that sets it apart from its competitors. It's DEFINITELY not for everyone, and there are many faults about its design, but that can be said about the others as well. *Stock for stock, the 1994 to 1999 3000GT VR-4 was faster in a straight line than the first gen Acura NSX, ANY get Evo or STI, the Nissan 300ZX TT and Mazda RX-7 TT, dig or roll, and on the drag strip* It was also faster than the overrated MK4 Supra TT from a dig and low speed roll. If the Supra driver messed up his launch, he wouldn't catch the VR-4 at all. On the flip side, the VR-4 is a HARD car to launch correctly due to its clutch and weight...it's nothing like launching an Evo (which I've also owned, meh). It's an art form, and when done correctly, the VR-4 launches so hard that the E-brake flies up! Feels like getting rear ended by a huge sedan without the body damage, no feeling like it in the car world IMO. It's truly a grand touring car - in stock form, it can pull flat 13s on the drag strip and then drive 300 miles in comfort with the coldest AC you've ever felt in your life. Yes, the interior is far from perfect, but it does its job well. And the backseat can actually fit adults for short periods of time, unlike the MK4 TT I owned. On the highway, it's quiet and composed, and all it takes is one downshift to pass 99.9% of the cars on the road, and this is in stock trim. Add bigger turbos and supporting mods, and you're running 10s in a car with a full interior that looks completely stock. I've embarrassed many exotic cars in my modded '95 VR-4, including C7 Vettes, Nissan GTRs, etc. The only car that really took me was a modded 2003 Lotus Esprit V8-TT that was making like 500@whp, and MAN that Lotus was fast!! Also, the MK4 Supra TT is unimpressive stock IMO, and is WILDLY overrated in the US. Go to Japan, and the Supra TT sells for the same as a used GTO TT or Fairlady Z TT. It wasn't as fast as my VR-4 stock for stock until 100mph, where it was almost too fast. Got tons of tickets in that damn Supra TT. YES, IT'S HEAVY!!! So was the 300ZX TT and Supra TT, the VR-4 was about 200 to 300lbs heavier than those two depending on the year of the VR-4 and the options. Leave these cars to those that really love them - an unloved and uncared for VR-4 is a NIGHTMARE. Thats one of the reasons people hate these cars - they don't maintain them.

Mudbone gaming I've noticed alot of interest in the platform recently for some reason. Im hoping youre right. Its not just demuro, there's been a couple KZbin reviews recently. I just don't want to see these cars get into the hands of idiot kids who will trash them, but at the same time don't want them to be unattainable for real adult enthusiasts. These cars are awesome, but aren't for everyone. And there is NOTHING worse than a high mileage, uncared for 3000GT VR4, or even a clapped out SL. I've seen prices ALL over the place. Ebay has low, low mileage stock ones for $30k - $50k, and i recently saw a used bone stock 119k mile 1996 Dodge Stealth RT-TT for $15k. I wanted that '96 reaaal bad, but have too much invested into my '95 VR4 that's modded to the hilt. I'd have offered a trade for that Stealth TT for my bone stock 1997 VR4, but he obviously doesn't want another 3s, and my '97 VR4 has low mileage (42k) and is pristine. Oh well.

Alex Villalobos yes, this is true, but has also gotten mixed results - some say it works, others say it doesn't make much of a difference. Go on 3si.org, the instructions / results are on there, its a simple process. I own a 93 Stealth TT as well, im in the middle of modding it, and just got a boost controller instead of doing the 'free mod', but then again it's a true project and im ordering upgraded turbos, its running rich right now, set it at 16psi with some other supporting mods, but its having issues :) 1993 is the best year for a 1g Stealth TT. I really want a 1996 Stealth TT, but they're almost impossible to find, and im on my 13th 3s if you count my current 2 VR4s and the project Stealth TT i mentioned. 3si.org is by far the best resource for any 3000GT/Stealth, even the base models are covered extensively.

yep, and for awhile the tape players had manual switches to alter sound reproduction to adapt to whichever tape type you were playing, so "auto metal" is a feature that eliminates the need for that switch. as for "FM diversity," that presumably means that it is using a "diversity antenna" which is designed to improve sound quality by receiving the signal through multiple independent channels

Seriously Acceleration 6/10. 4.8 seconds was insanely fast for 99. And even for today's standards that's damn good, and also look at what this car competed against. Plus look at all the Tech it had to offer, and how much it influenced. Then saying its No Ferrari or Lamborghini or even a new sports car, thats comparing apples to steak. I must not have already commented here. I had a '91 VR-4 followed by a '95. The '91 had adjustable suspension and remarkably neutral handling in a unique Fuji Blue. The '95 with more HP and a 6 speed, was faster but no adjustable suspension, it had some understeer but still good handling. Note I recall the turbo coming on at 2500 RPMs and not much lag for the day, although more than today's best. When equipped with a sunroof like your review car, it did loose 1" headroom but it was enough for me at 5'11" I really enjoyed the 8 years with both.

auto metal on the cassette deck refers to automatic detection of metal oxide tapes I assume. The tape coating was less hissy and better dynamic range and was more expensive. But it required usually a metal on/off button to adjust deck electronics to benefit from this. So having that detect automatically is just .. cooler. no button needed.

Doug, you need to find the 1991 3000GT VR4... or any of the VR4s with the pop up headlights. Those were the versions that had Active Aero. They were definitely ahead of their time with an active rear spoiler and active front spoiler. I remember the VW Corrado had an active rear spoiler too, but no front spoiler. Most might not know this, but in the 80's and early 90's, Mitsubishi (and Subaru) were high-tech laden vehicles. Driving loaded versions were like driving a video game.

Doug - look over the high-end Maxell (for example) blank cassette tapes used to record CDs and some other forms of audio back when. 'Metal' was a premium quality feature of blank cassettes - most likely beginning in the 1980s or before - that offered a slightly improved fidelity recording over conventional materials used in the construction those blank tapes that allowed for 'mix tapes' or reproduction of compact discs if you did not have a head unit with CD or wanted some other flexibility from your media (i.e., did not want to lug around so many CDs on a trip or around town to sit in your vehicle and get stolen) when they sometimes retailed for $18 in late 80s money. Metal was a special setting that the deck needed to select to accommodate when the 'Audio Enthusiast' storage choice of Metal Cassette tapes were used to give the best sound. The 20th Cent. version of HD sound as it were.

These '90s cars with more then 200 hp and that were fairly common in the US, so NOT uncommon to see them street racing... Yes they would easily beat most other "stock" vehicles of the time. 1) Nissan 300ZX - 300 hp (5.2 sec. 0-60) 2) Mitsubishi Lancer Evo - 244 - 276 hp 3) Mazda RX-7 - 276 hp 4) Honda S2000 - 240 hp 5) Toyota Supra - 320 hp 6) Subaru WRX STI - 240 hp (4.7 sec. 0-60) Very few "Buick" vehicles are going to be able to keep up with these vehicles let alone beat them. Yes the Grand National GNX 276 hp (5.7 sec. 0-60) and the 1970s GSX 360 hp (5.5 sec. 0-60) were quickest of that time (older, but Buick was not building good cars in the "90s")... BUT they still were slower then the ones above (stock, NOT modified).

Christopher Adams ... You might want to read the OP comment again... NOTHING in there about what car it was, just that AWD and 200+ HP could beat 99% of cars in the 90s. While 99% is an exaggeration. I would say 9 out of 10 times, so more like 90% of the cars on the road in the 90s would loose to a car like the ones I mentioned above and the one in this video. Considering most American v8s were doing 200+ hp but weighted far more then cars like the Mitsubishi EVO, or the Toyota Supra... PLUS those Japanese cars could handle going around corners.

I miss my 92 SL. It broke down all the time, I owned it for 4 years and only put a total of 10k miles on it, replacing bent valves and two transmission rebuilds and I loved owning every second of it. Especially because it pushed me into working on my own cars doing basic maintenance while in highschool.

I bought an SL about two years ago and I learned to rebuild the motor myself with an experienced mechanic and it keeps teaching new things to me today. It gets gown faster than people think. It aint a VR-4 but man does it take off.
